Christmas Windows

Christmas Window judging has taken place this week and below are the 1st,2nd and 3rd place windows in each school house group. A huge amount of hard work and creativity has gone into all the Christmas Windows around the town. Thank you to everyone that took part in this competition, it really has brought some festive cheer to the local community. Children that participated were presented with a selection box today and winners were presented with certificates and prizes. A huge thank you to Dalbeattie Lions Club in supporting the  school with this competition, providing prizes and selection boxes. A very generous donation of £200 has also been given to the school for school funds.

Screel

1st Jasper Burns. His fun depiction of a Grinch Father Christmas was imaginative and fun and was seen from a distance.  Lights for evening too.

2nd Winner is Lucy and Jack Johnstone. It showed how much Christmas is important to Lucy who wanted to come out and explain her Australian creation. Usually her family travelled every Christmas to family and she was very sad to miss going this due to the pandemic so she had her teddy in sunglasses on his deck chair by the backdrop seaside, Christmas tree, campfire, eucalyptus and Aussie beer. Lucy had put a lot of thought into the window display. Lights for night too.

3rd is Lucy Bell. We liked her traditional  cut out Christmas tree and fireplace with Father Christmas halfway up or down the chimney. It was lit with lights for a night show.

Craignair

1st Katie Harper had Father Christmas and his Reindeers on the way to the Carrot family with lots of presents, twinkling night stars in the sky. Imaginative and filled the window.

2nd. Katie and Samuel Dickie. Their window was well lit. We liked their golden Christmas trees and Gingerbread houses and snowy scene with people.

3rd is Abigail Houston. Lovely silver circle twinkling with lights encircling a Christmas tree, candle lights and snowflakes falling all around. 

Colliston

1st Fionnlagh and Isabella Docherty’s take on the Nutcracker be it ballet or story. Includes clockwork castle and traditional nutcracker figure. The window is framed with white scrolling.

2nd Nathan Stephen and Nicole Hartley. Father Christmas halfway down the chimney upside down and a snowman watching wide eyed  in the garden. Well lit in the evening.

3rd Mylo Farrimond. Lovely take with a Victorian style shop window.  Asking Santa to stop and see the gifts on offer. A beautiful, doll, car, shop wagon, rocking horse and Victorian set of shops, all lit up with fairy lights and hanging decorations.

Dalmun

1st Ossian Ferguson  – Santa’s Little Helpers – A ferris wheel and helter skelter Christmas Fairground with the little helpers having a party.

2nd Cameron and Connor Hitchell – With their cheery display of a smiling snowman surrounded by  presents and good wishes.

 3rd Andrew Kalotka – Giant snowmen climbing for the star on the top of the tree, and friendly  penguin.

Sid the Snake

Sid the Snake was rehomed today. Sid was originally created during lockdown(Spring2020). Sally Falconer started Sid and lots of Dalbeattie residents And visitors to the town added stones to help  Sid grow. Today Dennis Parker and Alan Duncan helped Mrs Duncan to rehome Sid in the school playground.

School Grown Vegetables

Dear Parents and Carers
Please support our School Vegetable Growing!
This Thursday morning (and after school if any left) please come prepared with your bag together with some money to donate for some of our school grown vegetables. We have potatoes, carrots, onions and beetroot. Normally we use most of our vegetables into soup as part of our harvest celebrations. However due to restrictions around staying within our bubbles, it isn’t practical to make and serve soup to the whole primary school s we would normally do this also with High School help. On Thursday morning, the vegetables will be laid out on a table and trolley in the circular tar area and  (inside the pedestrian access from Haugh Road.) People can help themselves to however much they want and are asked to put their donations in the honesty box (tub.) First come, first served. The potatoes taste nice but are perhaps a little late for treating as ‘new’ but would be better mashed.

Start of Fairtrade Fortnight 2020

Today, in school, we marked the start of Fairtrade Fortnight with our ‘Fairtrade Morning Snack.’ This was helped greatly by donations from local businesses Co-op, Tesco and Kinnairds. The main snack on offer was a choice of Fairtrade bananas or our own crafted shortbread biscuits topped with chocolate and jelly beans.  At the time of writing, we are not sure what amount of money we have raised from this but any proceeds will go to the Fairtrade Foundation. Later in the day,  Primary 5 together with the school’s Eco Committee listened to a very informative presentation by Mary Van Zwanenberg which included a very interesting film ‘Guardians of the Rainforest.’  Many of our classes also took part in class learning. Primary 1/2 had lots of Fairtarde themed activities in the open area. The end of Fairtrade Fortnight will be marked at assembly on 6th March with a small play by the Eco Committee.

Scots Poetry Assembly 14.2.20

Today in assembly, we celebrated our Scots Poetry Competition work with certificates being presented to first, second and third place finalists. The first place winners then entertained the whole school with a recitation of their chosen poems. Today, also saw the visit of our guests from Dalbeattie Burns Club who judged not only the Primary 7 pupils who recited an excerpt from Robert Burns’ Tam O’ Shanter but also the art work, which depicted a scene from the same poem.

Also in our assembly, Primary 4/5 drew the raffle for the completed Titanic Quizzes. The winner, receiving £10 was Lucy Simpson.  Our Primary 5 class was awarded with the Wow tracker Active travel to School Award. Finally, Roman Bond and Chloe Campbell reminded us all that the first day back after the February holiday (Monday 24th) will be Fairtrade Snack day with biscuits (shortbread with chocolate and jelly bean) costing 60p and bananas 40p. Pupils can buy two items each. All products used carry the Fairtrade logo. Proceeds from the snack will go to the Fairtrade foundation, in keeping with our targets to retain our ‘Fair Achiever School’ status.

Head Teacher’s Awards 7.2.20

Lots of deserving pupils were again awarded their certificates and prizes for their hard work, effort and positive attitude to their learning. Our photos show several successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors and responsible citizens.

Head Teacher’s Awards Assembly 31.1.20

Today in awards, we had many successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors and responsible citizens who were awarded with their certificates. We also had a visit from Mr and Mrs Wilbur from Dalbeattie Chamber of Trade  who came to receive a cheque for £57 from the Rotakids Club for the Christmas lights appeal. The Rotakids Club, had, under the guidance of Mr and Mrs Cathro, raised the money with ‘Guess the Sweets in the Jar’ before the Christmas holidays. Rotakids is a junior Rotary Club which aims to undertake good work for the community, school and the wider global  environment. Certificates were also awarded for good performance in Accelerated Reader quizzes. Also at the assembly, were senior High School pupils who informed us about the new recycling bins in the dinner hall so that waste can be better segregated.
