A huge thank you to all those who came along to our final Open Day on Saturday 20th of May here in our iconic granite building. There was a fantastic turnout for the big picture in front  of the bell tower. It was lovely to feel the atmosphere and buzz in the school as people shared memories whilst visiting classrooms and different areas of the school.

Open Day May 20th

Remember Saturday May 20th is fast approaching… Between 10am and 3pm on this date it will be our Open Day. To mark the final months in our current building we are hosting this event to mark and recognise the history of Dalbeattie Primary school on its current site.

On Saturday  20th May,  there will be one final doors open day which will take place in both the upper and lower school buildings. Visitors are welcome to visit Dalbeattie Primary School to reminisce, share memories and view the school as it is today. Doors will open at 10a.m and close at 3p.m . At 12 mid-day, we would like as many people as possible who have been pupils and staff at Dalbeattie Primary School (or indeed, the High School pre 1958) to join us in front of the bell tower for a large group photograph to mark the event.  It may even get us into the Record books for the most former pupils and staff in a picture SO KEEP THE DATE! The photo will be taken from the air by a licensed drone. Please note, however, all friends, members of the school and wider local community are welcome to visit the buildings at any point during the day. We are very happy to announce that Dalbeattie Lions Club is providing eco friendly balloons to be released on the day too, as part of the mid-day photo. These balloons which have been sourced from a company which avoids any issues for the environment, have a competition tag attached for the balloon which travels the furthest

Crafting at Alma House

Spring was certainly in the air today as a group of 12 P6 and P7 pupils visited Alma House in Dalbeattie. The children visited residents and took part in some Spring and Easter Craft activities with them. Easter Bonnets, cards, and decorated boxes were just some of the items that they created together. The children were fantastic ambassadors for the school and were very engaged in dialogue with residents during the visit. A great example of intergenerational working.

P5D Singing at Dalbeattie Day Centre

Great enthusiasm and a responsible attitude were shown by pupils in Primary 5D who performed to visitors at Dalbeattie Day Centre. The class have been working with musicians from Feis Rois to learn a variety of Scots songs. They have also learned to play rhythms on the taiko drums to accompany the song “Hey Donal”. Pupils performed a selection of their favourite songs as well as sharing their drumming skills. Mrs Dyson was delighted by the great attitude shown by all pupils when performing and in their conversations with the visitors afterwards. We would like to say thank you to the visitors of Dalbeattie Day Centre for being a wonderful audience, to the staff for the juice and biscuits afterwards, to the adults who accompanied us on the walk and also to Kate and Peter from Feis Rois who have worked so enthusiastically with us!

Penalty Shoot Out

On Saturday 25th of March, 7 pupils from P6 and P7 went along to Islecroft to  watch the local football team Dalbeattie Start playing in a match against Edinburgh University. At half time, the boys were invited onto the pitch  and had a penalty shoot out against each other. This was a great experience for the boys being on the full size pitch and trying to save penalties in the full sizes goal. Thank you to Dalbeattie Starr FC for inviting us to be part of the day and we look forward to joining future games and supporting the team.

P5D visit RSPB Mersehead

Primary 5D enjoyed our outing to RSPB Mersehead to learn about the journey of  Barnacle Geese. We were amazed at the journey the geese make from Svalbard in the Arctic to Scotland each year. We had great fun creating our own beach art using natural materials. After lunch, we learned about the lifecycle of the Natterjack Toad. This rare and amazing toad is currently hibernating at Mersehead. We visited the bird hide and used binoculars to spot wildlife. Although the weather was wet and windy, we had a great day!

Salmon In The Classroom

Our school Eco Group enjoyed a trip to Shirmers Burn to release our alevins today. Mrs Dyson’s Primary 5 and the Eco group have been involved in looking after salmon eggs in school. Rowan Armstrong from Galloway Fisheries brought us a tray of 100 eggs together with a water cooler, just over two weeks ago. They hatched a week later and so were ready to be released, today, into the water so that they can continue feeding once their yolk sacs are all used up. We will revisit the burn in June to take part in some electro fishing when we will be able to see how much our salmon have grown. By then, they will be ‘fry’ before becoming ‘parr’ when they are one year old.  We were also very interested to see frogspawn in one pond and toads in another. Afterwards we enjoyed eating our snacks while enjoying the pleasant weather and the lovely views of the Loch Ken countryside.
