Fairtrade Community Quizzes

There has been lots going on at Dalbeattie Primary to mark Fairtrade  Fortnight 2024 which has been held at the later month of September this year due to its being the 30th anniversary of the Fairtrade Foundation.

As previously reported, the eco committee made Fairtrade chocolate and Malteser crispies made with ingredients donated  by Dalbeattie Co-op, Castle Douglas Tesco and Dalbeattie Spar. The pupils brought in donations for this to help raise money for the Fairtrade Foundation. Throughout the school, pupils have also been including learning about Fairtrade as part of their learning in class.

Running alongside this was a Fairtrade Quiz based on products in the local shops. We are very grateful again to Dalbeattie Co-op, Castle Douglas  Tesco, Dalbeattie Spar and also to Dalbeattie Londis for facilitating this.

The children who took part returned their forms with one pound donations and the chance to take part in a prize draw.  Today, in assembly, the lucky winning forms were pulled from the ‘hat.’ The winners were Logan, Annie, Elise, Rex, Evie and Niamh who also got a special prize for compiling the most comprehensive list of other Fairtrade items, not featured in the quiz. All the participants received a treat size bag of Maltesers in recognition of their effort in completing the quiz. The school has raised almost £100 for the Fairtrade Foundation. All these activities help us to retain our Fairachiever School Status which we have to reapply for every two years.

Fairtrade Crispies

Thank you so much everyone for supporting this activity.  The children looked like they enjoyed them. A big thank you goes to Dalbeattie Spar, Castle Douglas Tesco and Dalbeattie Co-op  for supporting this event with their wonderful donations.  They are shown in three of the pictures attached. (The one with the Eco Committee shows our  goodies from Spar. ) Having these ingredients, means that the activity will raise almost £100 for the Fairtrade Foundation and this helps us keep out School FairAchiever Status. Thank you to Jean Carruthers for also coming into to help the outgoing Eco Committee  (who planned this before the holidays) and the High School Hospitality Department for letting us use the facility. The Fairtrade Community Quiz is still ongoing. Completed forms to be in by Monday 30th September. If anyone needs a spare, there are more copies in school. Thank you!

Fairtrade Crispies

The ingredients are in! Just a reminder…. Tomorrow  (Friday) is the day for children to bring 50p each for a Fairtrade crispie cake. The eco councillors will collect in the money and work out how many we need to make on Monday.  All profits will go to the Fairtrade Foundation.  This work helps us to retain out ‘FairAchiever School’ status. We are grateful to  Dalbeattie Spar and Castle Douglas Tesco who, so far,  have donated ingredients.  The crispies should be made and given out at snack time on Monday. Fairtrade Activities

Today, we found out about how we could take part in activities to mark Fairtrade Fortnight.  Aidan and Meadow talked us through a powerpoint about two activities,  at assembly, this afternoon.

The first activity is the chance to bring in a donation (for the Fairtrade Foundation) in return for a chocolate crispie/Malteser cake  They will cost 50p each.  Money is to be brought in on Friday 20th September, The crispie cakes will be made and given out on Monday 23rd September. The Eco Group showed us some of the donations they already have for making  the chocolate treats. Thank you Dalbeattie Spar and Castle Douglas Tesco who have so far given us donations.

The second activity is about an optional Community  Fairtrade Quiz with prizes to be won.  Thank you Dalbeattie Spar, Londis, Co-op and Castle Douglas Tesco for agreeing to this. The pupils  should have brought a sheet home tonight- it is all explained on there. If anyone wants to take part over the weekend but has not yet brought home the actual sheet, attached are the front and reverse of the quiz sheet. Once the sheet comes home, you can fill it in properly.  There will be until Friday 29th September to send them back into school.  Thank you for your support. All these activities help us to retain our FairAchiever School Status.

Fair Achiever School Award

Dalbeattie Primary is delighted to have been awarded, once more, Fair Achiever Status on 17th November. Over the last two years the School eco group has been involved in activities during Fairtrade Fortnight. This has included class learning and making chocolate and banana muffins with donations of ingredients from local shops (Castle Douglas Tesco, Dalbeattie Co-op and Spar) which helped us to fundraise for the Fairtrade Foundation. In 2023, we also had a successful community challenge which involved pupils searching for Fairtrade products in local shops. We were praised for this in our feedback to our recent application. Thanks go to Dalbeattie Co-op, Londis and Spar for facilitating this activity and to CD Tesco for donating prizes.  Being a Fair Achiever School, means we can attach the logo, being held here by the Eco Group in our photo, to our school headed paper. Going forward, The Eco group has now been tasked with going away to think about ways to do a similar community challenge, to talk about at our next meeting, so that we can plan for Fairtrade Fortnight 2024!
