Primary 7 Leavers

It’s that time of year again when we have to say goodbye, sadly to our Primary 7 leavers. This year, they haven’t far to travel to, in the next part of their journey through school.  First, however, they have treated us all with their special memories of their years in the Nursery and Primary. Based on the ‘Gogglebox’ show, the children created a script which saw several TV programmes acting as the stimulus for lots of varied memories. And what great use they made of some of the school’s new soft seating! Well done Primary 7! We are sorry to see you go but you won’t be far away…..

Pupil Council Visit to Library

The School pupil Council has visited Dalbeattie Town Library to see the refurbishment and to see what is on offer for our young people. We were thrilled by the wonderful new children’s area. We found out about how we could become members to borrow books and about the reference collections which are a great resource for topic work. Mrs Howie was particularly excited to hear about the possibilities for classes to have visits to the library to do activities linked to their topics. Teachers will be getting information about this soon.

Scottish Opera

Dalbeattie Primary was treated to a true delight this week- a visit from Scottish opera who worked with Primary 6 and 7 pupils to perform ‘The Dragon of the Western Sea.’

The opera is inspired by the true story of the fantastic voyages of  Chinese Admiral Zheng He – leader of a vast fleet of gigantic ships which set out to explore the coastal territories and islands along the western seaboard of Asia in the early part of the fourteenth century. These epic adventures took the travellers from the rainforests of Indonesia to the west coast of India and far beyond to the gulf of Arabia and the grasslands of  Africa in search of trade, treaties and treasure as well as to spread amongst these nations of the glory and power of the Empire of China.

We are very grateful to Kate Picken who organised this for us during the week that Scottish Opera were visiting the area as part of Creative Scotland YMI funded week in D&G.

We are delighted to introduce Fairtrade Footballs at Dalbeattie Primary School. With money raised from our Primary 5 Fairtrade Games Event and from our Fairtrade Breakfast, we have bought twenty new Fairtrade Footballs. Thank you to everyone who attended these events! Primary 5 pupils have already been practising their ball skills with our new footballs.

Primary 4 Trip to Rockcliffe and Kippford RNLI and SYC

Primary 4 have just recently had a fun filled day to Rockcliffe and Kippford. This was to tie in with their learning about the Galloway Coastline. At Rockcliffe, they met with National Trust for Scotland (NTS) Rangers to look for creatures in rock pools and to build awareness about the issues of plastic and other litter in the oceans after collecting items from the beach.  A big thank you goes to James and David and the other NTS volunteers.  then it was time for a walk up the Muckle Hill before lunch on the beach near to Roughfirth. At Kippford the pupils had  a visit to the RNLI Station where they saw the crew’s changing room and kit. They even got to try on some of the gear and enjoyed a close up look at the lifeboat itself. We are very grateful to Linda for showing us around. At the Solway Yacht Club (SYC) the children watched some dinghies out sailing together with a safety boat. The children also saw, at close hand, ‘Everest Skye 2, ‘ the namesake albeit number 2 of the dinghy in the Nursery garden back at school, which was gifted by SYC back in November ahead of a boat naming ceremony by Sir Malcolm Ross. At the SYC boat yard, the pupils enjoyed helping to do the final rigging of the laser dinghy before seeing it launched by James Howie.  Thank you SYC and the  Bishop family. Thank you also to all the parent and grandparent helpers.  A great day was had by all!

P5 Visitors

As part of our Scotland topic in Primary 5, we were visited by Leah’s mum and a gamekeeper who spoke to us about local wildlife. We really enjoyed hearing facts about the deer in particular. Thank you for offering to come into school.  We also had a visit from British Divers Marine Life Rescue who gave us a very informative talk about the important work they do. We especially enjoyed hearing about the rescue of the seal. Thank you for visiting us!
