Children in Need Week

There‘s been a major focus on fundraising for Children in Need this week at Dalbeattie Primary. And it’s all been organised by The School Pupil Council who have brought their ideas to how to make it a little different this year.

Firstly, we saw the return of the Spotty Ball Pit. The pupils have been bringing in donations for drawing ball numbers from the ball pit for a chance to win a Pudsey goody. The numbers were drawn on the actual Children in Need Day and the lucky winners were: Calum Brown, Kyla Waller, Ed Parr, Skye Johnstone, Beth Blackstock, Leo Hastings,  Harrison McVinnie (missing from picture,) Charlotte Gale, Reggie Murray and Isla Whalen.

Meanwhile, another competition also ran through the week. Pupils had the chance to enter a competition to design a new eye patch for Pudsey or a bow for Blush. The entries were amazing! Perhaps we shall need to share them with the BBC. It was a very tough job for the School Pupil Council to judge the entries but they eventually came up with winners of the Pudsey Patch as: Eva Tinklin, Niamh McCormick, Ava Corson, Jasper Burns, Elise Wixon, Connor Houston, Alex Davidson, Joey McKerlie and Olivia Carson. The Blush Bow winners were: Ellie Tinklin, Mollie Watson, Esme hicks, Evie McGougan, Eilidh Brown, Liam Geddes, Kelsey Copland, Allie McMinn and Aurla Ferguson.

And, finally, on Friday in school, we had a non uniform day when the children could wear something either yellow, spotty or simply bright and colourful. Donations brought in on this day were split between Children in Need and the Janice Jamieson memorial Fund to sponsor a young person’s education in Malawi.

The amount raised for Children in Need is still being totalled but it is thought we will reach a figure of at least £300, which is an amazing figure! Well done all and thank you for supporting our School Pupil Council in this valuable fundraising activity.

On top of all this, there has been lots of learning activities going on in classes too with the pupils learning about how Children in Need helps other young people in the UK.

Please see the previous post for our school councillors in action helping with all the fundraising throughout the week.

Children in Need Part 1

Remember, tomorrow is non uniform day for Children in Need. A suggested donation of £1 will be collected in and the total amount will be split between Children in Need and the Janice Jamieson Memorial Foundation to sponsor a young person’s education in Malawi.
Earlier in the week, the School Pupil Council has been organising other fundraising activities for Children in Need. Wow! What an amazing amount of entries we have had for our ‘Design a new Pudsey Patch or Blush Bow’ competition. The School Pupil Councillors had their work cut out judging them. Each councillor was given a number of cubes and asked to place them on their seven favourite designs in each category and these were counted to decide the winners. The winners and runners up will be announced at tomorrow’s assembly together with drawing the lucky ball pit numbers. For this too we have had an amazing response with approximately 300 balls pulled from the spotty ball pit ahead of tomorrow’s lucky numbers being pulled from the hat. Thank you all for supporting these activities.

Fairtrade Community Quizzes

There has been lots going on at Dalbeattie Primary to mark Fairtrade  Fortnight 2024 which has been held at the later month of September this year due to its being the 30th anniversary of the Fairtrade Foundation.

As previously reported, the eco committee made Fairtrade chocolate and Malteser crispies made with ingredients donated  by Dalbeattie Co-op, Castle Douglas Tesco and Dalbeattie Spar. The pupils brought in donations for this to help raise money for the Fairtrade Foundation. Throughout the school, pupils have also been including learning about Fairtrade as part of their learning in class.

Running alongside this was a Fairtrade Quiz based on products in the local shops. We are very grateful again to Dalbeattie Co-op, Castle Douglas  Tesco, Dalbeattie Spar and also to Dalbeattie Londis for facilitating this.

The children who took part returned their forms with one pound donations and the chance to take part in a prize draw.  Today, in assembly, the lucky winning forms were pulled from the ‘hat.’ The winners were Logan, Annie, Elise, Rex, Evie and Niamh who also got a special prize for compiling the most comprehensive list of other Fairtrade items, not featured in the quiz. All the participants received a treat size bag of Maltesers in recognition of their effort in completing the quiz. The school has raised almost £100 for the Fairtrade Foundation. All these activities help us to retain our Fairachiever School Status which we have to reapply for every two years.

Fairtrade Crispies

Thank you so much everyone for supporting this activity.  The children looked like they enjoyed them. A big thank you goes to Dalbeattie Spar, Castle Douglas Tesco and Dalbeattie Co-op  for supporting this event with their wonderful donations.  They are shown in three of the pictures attached. (The one with the Eco Committee shows our  goodies from Spar. ) Having these ingredients, means that the activity will raise almost £100 for the Fairtrade Foundation and this helps us keep out School FairAchiever Status. Thank you to Jean Carruthers for also coming into to help the outgoing Eco Committee  (who planned this before the holidays) and the High School Hospitality Department for letting us use the facility. The Fairtrade Community Quiz is still ongoing. Completed forms to be in by Monday 30th September. If anyone needs a spare, there are more copies in school. Thank you!

RNLI Kippford

Three of our pupils were joint equal winners in a recent poster competition to mark the 200 year anniversary of the RNLI. Part of their prize was a tour of the Lifeboat station at Kippford. well done Holly, Rosa and Isla.  Looks like you had great fun! A great big thank you goes to Laura, Gareth, Lynda and Marion at RNLI Kippford.

Fairtrade Crispies

The ingredients are in! Just a reminder…. Tomorrow  (Friday) is the day for children to bring 50p each for a Fairtrade crispie cake. The eco councillors will collect in the money and work out how many we need to make on Monday.  All profits will go to the Fairtrade Foundation.  This work helps us to retain out ‘FairAchiever School’ status. We are grateful to  Dalbeattie Spar and Castle Douglas Tesco who, so far,  have donated ingredients.  The crispies should be made and given out at snack time on Monday. Thank you for supporting this activity!

Fairtrade Activities

Today, we found out about how we could take part in activities to mark Fairtrade Fortnight.  Aidan and Meadow talked us through a powerpoint about two activities,  at assembly, this afternoon.

The first activity is the chance to bring in a donation (for the Fairtrade Foundation) in return for a chocolate crispie/Malteser cake  They will cost 50p each.  Money is to be brought in on Friday 20th September, The crispie cakes will be made and given out on Monday 23rd September. The Eco Group showed us some of the donations they already have for making  the chocolate treats. Thank you Dalbeattie Spar and Castle Douglas Tesco who have so far given us donations.

The second activity is about an optional Community  Fairtrade Quiz with prizes to be won.  Thank you Dalbeattie Spar, Londis, Co-op and Castle Douglas Tesco for agreeing to this. The pupils  should have brought a sheet home tonight- it is all explained on there. If anyone wants to take part over the weekend but has not yet brought home the actual sheet, attached are the front and reverse of the quiz sheet. Once the sheet comes home, you can fill it in properly.  There will be until Friday 29th September to send them back into school.  Thank you for your support. All these activities help us to retain our FairAchiever School Status.

Assembly and Head Teacher’s Awards 13.9.24

Today at assembly we heard from Meadow and Aiden about the Fairtrade activities that the Eco group are going to be undertaking as part of Fairtrade fortnight. Mrs Howie will be sharing more detail in due course. Well done Meadow and Aiden for being confident individual to stand up and share this information

In Friday Focus today the group spoke with me about our school value of being kind. This continued into assembly where I asked the children to think about what being kind means at Dalbeattie Primary. We certainly do have kind children here at Dalbeattie Primary.

We also spoke about the lost property trolley in assembly and the amount of items on this. I have asked the children to try and be more responsible with their property and try to collect it and keep it safe.

Awards were give out today for a fantastic range of reasons. These included being committed to learning, being confident in PE and working collaboratively, working really hard in maths, building fluency in reading and for being a super role model. Well done to all our award winners.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Harvest Time!

It’s Harvest Time!

Tomorrow morning before school and at the end of the school day, some of our harvest will be set out for people to help themselves to. There are only a few carrots (not a good year) leeks, onions, beetroot, potatoes and lots of apples! Please bring your own bag and take what you can use. There will be a pot set out for donations plus some gloves and wipes. Any donations given will go towards the ongoing eco work in school. Thank you in anticipation for supporting this. Well done the Eco Committee on harvesting it all today!
