Primary 5 pupils carried out a bug survey in the School Grounds and then submitted the data to the OPAL (Open Air Laboratory) website. The first challenge was to identify the invertebrates found on human-made hard surfaces like the walls and fences.

SSPCA Protecting Wildlife
Primary 5 pupils were visited by an SSPCA officer to learn about the important work that the society carries out to help protect Scotland’s wildlife. A very informative visit!
P5 Watersports
Primary 5 pupils recalled the fun day they spent at Carlingwark Watersports. They wrote interesting diary entries detailing their thoughts and feelings throughout the day.
P5D Win Shield at the Music Festival
We were extremely proud of all Primary 5D pupils who performed in the Dumfries and District Music Festival on Friday. The class have loved receiving instruction with playing the ukulele from Mr Butterworth every fortnight. Mrs Dyson would like to thank Mr and Mrs Butterworth for all their input and support. The class enthusiastically performed “What shall we do with a ukulele?” and won the Ian Hart Shield and a Certificate of Commended Performance. The adjudicator commented: “You sang strongly and clearly throughout. Balance between the ukuleles and singing was always good. Strumming was largely rhythmic and chord changes were confident. Overall, an excellent approach resulting in an enjoyable performance.” We look forward to adding our engraving and displaying the shield. A big thank you to Mr and Mrs Butterworth who also presented every pupil with a special medal when coming off stage – a wonderful momento of our performance!
Eco Group Visit Rainbow Trout Farm
After releasing our salmon, the Eco members, Mrs Howie and Mrs Dyson made their way to the Bladnoch (near Wigtown) to see around the rainbow trout fish farm – an exciting opportunity to see a working trout farm and touch some big fish!
Eco Group Release our Salmon
We are excited to be participating in the Salmon in the Classroom Project run by Galloway Fisheries Trust. On Thursday, nine of our Eco Committee members, Mrs Howie and Mrs Dyson had the wonderful opportunity to accompany our salmon (known as alevins as they are now hatched) as they were released at the Dee Hatchery next to Loch Ken. Thank you very much to Rowan Armstrong from the Fisheries Trust. We look forward to returning to this release site in the Summer term to see how the salmon have developed.
Fairtrade Breakfast (10th March)

Fairtrade Breakfast (3rd March)
Thank you to everyone who supported our Fairtrade Breakfast this morning! We were excited to be participating in Fairtrade Fortnight by holding our very own Fairtrade Breakfast. Fairtrade tea, coffee, hot chocolate, orange juice, apple juice, toast with Fairtrade jam and honey, Fairtrade geo bars and Fairtrade oaty biscuits were all on offer. A big thank to the Cooperative Food shop in Dalbeattie who kindly donated the Fairtrade bananas. We also had some taster Divine chocolates to sample. Mrs Van Zwanenberg, a local Traidcraft representative, joined us with a variety of Fairtrade items available for purchase. Look out for our article and photos in the Galloway News soon. We are looking forward to another great Fairtrade breakfast next week. P5D take part in RSPB Birdwatch
Primary 5D pupils recently took part in the RSPB’s Birdwatch. Rangers from RSPB Mersehead worked with the pupils to help them identify a variety of birds in our local environment. Pupils carried out their study and then recorded the class results on the RSPB website. Pupils also had fun making their own bird feeders on the day too.

Next week, Primary 5D will be playing the ukulele and singing at the Dumfries and District Music Festival. All pupils have been working hard with Mr and Mrs Butterworth to learn their performance piece. Good luck Primary 5!
