Scottish Education Awards 2016

JLB Scottish Education award June 2016John Logie Baird Primary School and Pre Five Unit have been celebrating their success at the Scottish Education Awards 2016. They were delighted to be a top 3 finalist in the Learning through Technologies category at this year’s event. Judges from Education Scotland visited the school back in April and spoke to pupils, staff, parents and members of the community who were involved in their hugely successful Oscars Night and their innovative new Improving and Achieving report –

Keeping healthy at Kirn Primary School

Kirn PS Keeping Healthy 1One of the last whole school events held in the ‘old’ building of Kirn PS was our annual Health Week. Fun and informative health promoting events were organised for the whole week involving all ten classes and our Early Learning Childcare Centre. We were so lucky that lots of the health professionals in our community offered their time and expertise to lead sessions.

S3 art pupils get protesting!

IMG_0366S3 art and design pupils in six secondary schools have recently had a day off timetable to work with two professional artists and Fiona Blakey, Cultural Coordinator. The project was inspired by a recent visit from the Travelling Gallery and supported by Argyll Youth Arts and Education Scotland through the Creative Learning Network scheme. Coordinated by CAST, the artists, Rob Walker, Amy Whiten and Gillian Steele, worked with pupils from Oban, Lochgilphead, Tarbert, Campbeltown, Dunoon and Helensburgh. During their time with the artists pupils tried a variety of printing and urban contemporary art techniques each producing a large protest placard. Primary 2/3 iPad puppet shows

Kilcreggan p2-3 puppets b I June 2016P2/3 had a fabulous afternoon videoing their puppet shows this week and then watching all of the masterpieces. The show was the culmination of weeks of work; creating a character and a storyboard. Making the puppet and scenery then writing the play. They rehearsed their plays using the ‘Puppet Pals’ app on the school’s new iPad after which they were ready to use their puppets and be videoed. Well done P2/3 for all your hard work. Figaro up close!

IMG_0596S4 pupils who are studying national 5 music at Oban High had the opportunity to visit a pop up opera performance of Mozart’s Figaro on Wednesday. A shortened version of Figaro was performed by Scottish Opera in a converted articulated lorry which became a theatre on wheels with a stage, a chandelier and even the original carpet from the Theatre Royal in Glasgow. The lorry, which parked at the Corran Halls, was painted inside to look like the interior of the Theatre Royal and the audience of 22 were seated on stools with the singers, in full costume, performing amongst them. ​Scottish Diaspora Tapestry School Competition – Design Your Own Panel

w640_7187524_tapestryThe Scottish Diaspora Tapestry team, in partnership with Education Scotland, is offering Scottish schools an exciting opportunity to take part in a nationwide competition to plan, design and stitch your own diaspora story. The finished panels will be exhibited beside the Scottish Diaspora Tapestry in 2017. This exciting competition is open to both primary and secondary schools, and is designed to help pupils explore their community’s global links as well as their own creativity. Cast ‘Pilgrimage’

Tarbert CAST PilgrimageTarbert Academy Drama Club performed ‘The Pilgrimage’ by Pauk Goetzee at the Argyll Drama Festival last week! They were winners of the Youth Achievement Trophy, with the adjudicator, Kevin Boland, commenting on ‘the high standard of acting from a very talented team’. The Club is open to pupils from P7 upwards and this year’s cast ranged in age from P7 up to S5. Here they are just before going on stage!

Speech Making Week at Rothesay Primary

RPS Speech Making May 2016Last week all pupils at Rothesay Primary wrote speeches for their Challenge Homework. The pupils then had to deliver their speeches in class and answer any questions their classmates might have. Topics ranged from holidays, to hobbies, to family pets – Mrs Shaw even met a little black puppy in the corridor after having been a ‘live’ prop! Pupils learned the skills of note making, using prompt cards, ways to use props, how to involve your audience and how to listen and think of questions to ask if you were in the audience.
