Another week in P4/5

This week we have had fun learning about how to become a knight.  We used the internet to research the different roles that pages, squires and knights performed.  We have  not found any women who were knights in the castles, but we do know that some women were given knighthoods and took the title of Dame.

We also did some more handball in PE and we can see improvements since we started.  We are getting better at all our handball skills.

In maths we are continuing to work our way through fractions, which Emma is finding very easy.  Caitlyn has also been very successful this week.

To improve our strategies for learning we looked at the learning pit and made posters.  We now have more skills and confidence when tackling new and challenging tasks.

Dojo of the week was Katie!

We made houses for the three little pigs.

This week, we work in teams to build a house for the Three Little Pigs.  The houses needed to be strong so the wolf couldn’t blow them down.

We made our houses out of cardboard, paper and Lego bricks.

Then on Friday, we pretended that a hairdryer was the Big Bad Wolf and we tried to blow all the the houses down.

Some of the houses DIDN’T fall down.

We also learnt how to tell the time to o’clock and we made watches and clocks !!

Big School Bird Watch

This week we submitted our results to The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds annual research.

Bankton Think Tank Visit Meldrum Primary School

Five members of the Bankton Think Tank went to visit Meldrum Primary School to meet their Pupil Council. They took the Think Tank Floorbook with lots of interesting questions to ask the pupils and the headteacher. We learned lots about the working of another school, shared good ideas about learning and came back with lots to discuss at our next Think Tank meeting with Mrs. Stewart. Ryan said it was a good way to make sure that both schools were trying to improve outcomes for learners. Many thanks to Meldrum pupils for making us feel welcome.

Budding Gymnasts!

P1b have been improving their times as they get changed into their gym kit for gymnastics with Mr Muldoon!  The children have been working on lots of different skills including forward rolls, star jumps, swinging on the ropes and landing safely.  I was very impressed when I went in for a peek this week and I know that Mr Muldoon is very pleased with the hard work and good listening skills which are enabling the children to use the equipment safely.

Well done P1b

Ella’s Upsee

Today we had a very special visit in P4/5 when Ella showed us her Upsee.  Ella was really excited to show us how it worked.  The Upsee attached Ella to an adult and lets her walk around.  The Upsee was provided by Bankton and we are all very proud to see Ella walking about! P4/5 are very grateful to Ella for showing us her Upsee!

Our busy week in P1a

We have been busy learning all about our number facts to 8. We have been using cubes and our fingers to help us to work out the different ways that we can make 8.

‘You can swop the number around to make a new number fact’ Savannah.

‘I can use a numberline to find the missing numbers’ Ryan

‘I enjoyed finding different ways to make 8’ Charlie

In reading, we are working hard to sound out new words.

‘I liked book ‘pets’ it was fun’ Ava.

We have also been spending lots of time looking at our bean plants to see how they have been growing.  Lots of the beans now have a stalk and leaves.

‘My bean plant has leaves’ Ryan

‘My bean plant has lots of roots and it is sucking up the water’ Daniel S

‘My bean plant has roots’ Daniel G

In Art, we made super beanstalk pictures using beans and cotton. We think they look super !

Ziggy is going home with Savannah for the weekend and we look forward to hearing all about their adventures on Wednesday !

Outside Water Play

As the weather has been slightly better this week some of the nursery children had the chance to play with our new water toys outside.

They were able to observe the different speeds the water traveled down the wooden channels in to a bucket at the bottom.

Nursery Celebrations!

We have been learning about more celebrations from around the world.

On the 25th of January we dressed in tartan for burns night and even enjoyed a burns supper at snack time.  We were delighted that many of the children tasted their haggis, neeps and tatties and were able to explain their likes and dislikes to us.

This week we have been learning about Chinese New Year.  We know that it is the year of the monkey and that red is a lucky colour in China.  We used our cutting skills to make lanterns to decorate the nursery and our folding skills to make money envelopes like the ones children will get during the New Year celebrations.  We had a special chinese snack on Monday and some of us created our own dragon dances in music.  We really enjoyed trying to use chopsticks to lift different things in the nursery too.
