Vowel House in P1a

P1a really impressed Mrs Lloyd today with their fabulous vowel house work.  The children worked independently at a number of different stations while Mrs Lloyd worked with small groups to play the Swap vowel house game.  The independent activities included playing vowel house bingo, reading tricky words, playing vowel sounds games on the laptops, using the big interactive vowel house on the wall, matching sounds and words to the correct positions on the vowel house and drawing the vowel house on the big paper (as suggested by Josh).  Try asking your child to tell you all the sounds in the vowel house and the vowel house story – I bet you will be impressed!  These sounds are helping us with our reading and writing work.  Here are some pictures of us in action!

The Big Bad Wolf Arrived in P1a!

This week, P1a worked hard to finish their technology projects.  Their target was to plan, design and then build a house for one of the three little pigs which would withstand the big bad wolf (aka Mrs Lloyd with a hairdryer) huffing and puffing to blow it down.  After predicting which houses would stay standing and which would fall we tested them out and noted down the results.  The big bad wolf was getting more and more annoyed as she only managed to blow down one house!  Lots of good teamwork and problem solving skills have developed over the course of the project and the children should be proud of their work throughout the whole process.  Here are some pictures which show the finished houses and us testing them out!

Meteorite Master!

Last week to celebrate the solar eclipse, Sarah brought in a meteorite from home to share with the whole class.  She was very confident standing up in front of the class where she enjoyed telling the class how old the meteorite was and pointing out that it was much older than her dad!  Sarah passed it round and let everyone have a hold before showing us some pictures from her meteorite book.  She did such a good job telling us all about it that we thought she should go through and impress Mrs Thomson and P1/2.  Thank you for teaching us all about meteorites Sarah – you did a great job!

Lego Club

This week the boys did exceptionally well and built an amazing Starwars Vehicle.  They were very focussed on working well as a team and using good instructions to complete the task.

I was very proud of their achievements – Great work boys!!!!

Solar Eclipse

The nursery children observed the Solar Eclipse using the BBC live webcam where they had the opportunity to compare the different views from Lewis, Scotland and Newllyn, England.

Charlie also brought in his Pinhole Projector in for the children to see that he made at home with his mum to ensure that he could see the Solar Eclipse safely.

Woweee! The Solar Eclipse Sure Came To Bankton!

What an exciting morning we had across the school. After learning the science behind the solar eclipse and fully understanding the risks involved P3, P3/4, P4, P5, P5/6, P6, P6/7 and P7 all gathered together with their pinhole viewer at the ready!

To begin with the clouds spoiled our view, but as if by magic, as the eclipse happened, the clouds cleared a small patch, almost especially for us in the Bankton team!

We certainly won’t forget where we were on 20th March 2015! The next eclipse isn’t for around another 19 years!

The Solar Eclipse !!

Did you spot something special going on in the sky this morning?

P2 went out with special poin hole viewers to see if they could catch a glimpse of the eclipse.

We went very lucky to see it as the clouds decided to clear for a few minutes. Then we went in a watched it on the computer.IMG_2551 IMG_2552 IMG_2553 IMG_2554

Caiden thought it was amazing!

Charles said ‘the sun looked like it went dark’

Emma S said ‘It was amazing

P2 have also been busy making their model lorrys for our technology project!

We worked together really well to come up with a design and were excellent when it came to building time!

Reading Skills in P1a

This week, the children in P1a have again been using their teamwork skills.  The children worked in groups after we all read a text about butterflies.  They then had to work together in their groups to form a question which would help them to better understand the text.  We discussed question words and the children really impressed me with their fantastic questions, examples of which included:

  • What do butterflies like to eat?
  • Where can you find butterflies?
  • How do butterflies hatch?
  • Who nurtures the butterflies?

Here are some photos of the children co-operating in their groups.  Well done P1a, you worked hard together to think of quality questions!

Technology Project Well Under Way

First of all, thank you very much to all the parents who have been raiding their blue bins and collecting their junk items in order to help us with our technology project.  We have collected an impressive amount and this has enabled the children to experiment with lots of different sizes and shapes when planning and designing their houses.  The building of the houses for daddy pig is now well under way and the children are developing their team work skills in order to construct their houses which they hope will be strong enough to withstand the big bad wolf (aka Mrs Lloyd with a hairdryer!).  Here are some photos which let you see the children hard at work.
