This term we have been learning about Sound, doing lots of investigations and practical science and making instruments. Today we will be looking at all the amazing and creative musical instruments that have been made. Looking forward to hearing them all.
Last Friday we did the RSPB Schools Birdwatch, we had made fat balls and put birdseed out for several weeks. We didn’t see many species – mostly House Sparrows and Starlings, but all the P6/7s were fantastic at using the binoculars and identifying the species. They had also made superb identification posters about all our most common birds.
Welcome back and a Happy New Year
It has been lovely to see everyone back in school this year. Our topic for the first part of this term is Sound. After completing a formative assessment task, where we remembered what we already know about sound, we had a fun afternoon making string telephones and testing how well sound travels through different materials.
Christmas 🎶
This week Stevie and Annalie’s pupils gave us a treat by playing a range of tunes. It was lovely to hear everyone, what a range of talent.
Lighthouses
This week we have been making lighthouses so that Santa can find his way to Shetland! We used circuits with switches and bulbs. The children made some detailed models. They looked fantastic.
Drones – STEM
This afternoon Emma Chittick came into class to teach us about the use of drones in the World of Work. We found out about how drones are used in lots of different jobs and then we got to go up to the hall to try some out.
We worked in pairs and had a drone and an iPad to fly the drone with. We had to fly the drones up to six posters that had been placed around the hall and then we take pictures of the posters and read tiny words on them. It was so much fun. There might be a few drones added to Christmas lists!
This is the first time that Emma has used the drones with primary school children and she was very impressed with the P6/7 class.
Cards for French penpals
Today we finished our cards and letters for our French penpals. They are in for a treat and looked absolutely fantastic. We also made origami santas to put in the cards.

Children in Need
This week the Pupil Council made cupcakes for Children in Need. We went to the canteen to make them on Wednesday. We made over 200, one for everyone in the school and the rest were taken to be sold in Mainlands. We decorated them on Thursday. We put thick icing on them and the Pudsey rice paper topping.
Today we are having a pyjama day and at break time we handed out a tray of cakes to each class.
We are hoping to make money for this through Parent pay and a donations bucket at the shop.
On the bucket there are pictures from the competition, won by Rachel P4/5/7 and Lauren P2/3/4.
We hope you enjoyed the cakes and will make a donation
Thank you to all parents for their donations and to the canteen for helping us to make the cakes and Mrs Henderson for the ingredients.
Moja Island Renewable Energy
This afternoon we worked in groups to find out a bit more about the different types of renewable energy and what are the best ones to use in different environments.
The children were scientists and had to work out what would be the best energies to use in their villages on Moja Island. We had lots of great discussions and group work.
Coding -Save the Shark Cop 26
This morning we had a fantastic coding session with DYW. There were lots of difficult instructions to follow but we made it. We made a game where the shark had to try to dodge plastic and catch fish.
Witch’s brew / chemical reactions
This afternoon we found out about chemical reactions with acid and alkalines. We used coloured water, oil, bicarbonate and citric acid (see a similar recipe below). They looked great!
