We are an Eco School and have been awarded two green flags!
At Whinhill Primary we promote sustainability at all times. We work with our whole school community to keep Whinhill and our local area beautiful! Eco-Schools Scotland is designed to encourage whole-school community action on Learning for Sustainability. It encourages young people to engage in their environment by allowing them the opportunity to actively protect it. The Eco Schools programme starts in the classroom and expands to the whole school, eventually fostering change in the community at large.
We have many activities within our school to help encourage us to be Eco:
Super Sorters
The Super Sorters are a group of pupils who help us recycle on a weekly basis. Every Thursday they collect and organise the class blue bins and food waste ready for recycling on Friday morning.
Litter Pickers
We have a weekly rota for pupils to be involved in litter picking around our school grounds. During play and lunch times, they collect a litter picker from our Eco area and fill a black bin bag with any rubbish they find. Sometimes they have an empty bag because our pupils are excellent at keeping our playground clean and tidy! We recently organised a whole school campaign against litter.
Gardening Group
Our gardening group is run by Mrs Brown. They grow, plant and look after our beautiful school grounds. They have recently been involved in a great spud challenge and have planted some potatoes!
