Numeracy and Maths at Whinhill
Putting mathematical knowledge and understanding to constructive use has been one of the decisive factors in shaping societies. Engineering, science, technology and business rely upon mathematics and continue to find new applications for mathematics. Cultural development and artistic endeavour are influenced by mathematics. Each of us uses mathematical skills and concepts in everyday life.
To face the challenges of the 21st century, each young person needs to have confidence in using mathematical skills, and Scotland needs both specialist mathematicians and a highly numerate population. Concepts such as use number processes, estimating, working with fractions and percentages, managing money and time, making measurements and reading information from charts and tables are skills we need in our everyday lives.
We teach mathematics in such a way that children understand through activity. Numeracy activities provide practical and relevant examples incorporating real life situations as well as allowing pupils to progress at their own level.
At Whinhill pupils will develop their Numeracy and Maths skills through SEAL Maths, mental agility work and taking part in Number Talks to discuss and explain different maths strategies.
