RRSA-Level-1-Logo (2)The Rights Action Group are Abbi, Nick, Luke, Lucy F, Ryan and Arran. We are responsible for making sure that pupils in the school as respecting each others rights. We have a meeting once a month to discuss how to raise awareness of children’s rights in the school. We have recently created a playtime and lunchtime charter. We got together and picked rights  that pupils should be aware of when they are playing outside and having lunch in the gym hall. All classes also have a class charter and a ‘right of the month’ which we decide together every month.

We organised UNICEF Day for Change and decided we wanted the school to dress up as Superheroes and donate £1 to UNICEF. We think it is important to think about children in other countries and help make sure they get the rights they deserve too! We have a member from every class in the group who were voted in by their classmates at the beginning of the year. We regularly talk about how we can become GLOBAL CITIZENS and learn about cultures in other countries and compare them to our own.

We encourage classes to talk about children’s rights. Here is an example of an activity we have taken part in our class. We had to put a post-it on our heads and describe a right, our partner had to guess which right we were talking about!

We are decided on a Rights mascot which was a whole school competition where pupils had to draw a picture of a Superhero to represent children’s rights. The entries were great!

Last term we were involved in ‘Outright’ and we were writing letters to Aileen Campbell, the Minister for Children and Young People, to tell her about what we were doing in the school to support children’s rights. We also told her what rights were most important to us. She couldn’t write back to all our letters but she posted a video message. Here is the link:
