This week we were learning how to ask and answer basic questions in French. We learned how to speak French by practising phrases, talking to one another and asking each other questions. We were successful because we managed to respond to questions used to us by different people e.g. our teachers, a French lady and each other. This will be useful in high school because we will learn more difficult vocabulary. If we visit France, we could use some of our language there too. It was difficult at first to put on the French accent and to work out what we were being asked to do. We had to really think about the questions before we answered. We also have been learning Gaelic so sometimes we nearly answered in that language by mistake! That shows that we are learning to be bilingual. We are really proud because we managed by to sing two French songs for our visitor Je suis une Pizza and Quelle le date de ton anniversaire! Some of us need to work on our confidence but practise makes perfect!

Divided City

This week we started reading a book called Divided City written by Theresa Breslin. Set in Glasgow, this Book is about two friends called Joe Flaherty and Graham Anderson. They went to the same football training and when it got to their very first game, they won thanks to an excellent assist from Joe and Graham finished back of the net. On the way home from football, Graham spotted a gang of people chasing a boy down the street, he was eventually caught and then beaten and stabbed by the gang. We eventually found out his name was Kyoul and he didn’t want the police involved. W had a Talking Round Corners discussion and we think in Primary 7 that he could be an illegal immigrant.

As you may have guessed that this book is about Celtic v Rangers and how it split up Glasgow, this book is also about sectarianism and religion. We looked at Catholics and Protestants and learned about The Orange Walk. A really important part we have discussed is discrimination and how we should treat one another equally. We have only made it up to the end of chapter 4 but we love the book already!divided city

How to Knit using a Loom

HereToday Ellie taught us how to knit using a special loom. Ellie has been busy making lots of knitted hats for babies and we were all really interested in how she made them.  Ellie plans to hand them in to a baby unit in our local hospital – how thoughtful! What a wonderful Whinhill girl! Here is a ‘how to’ video so you can learn to knit too!

Here is what Ellie had to say: It was so fun creating my hat ‘how to’ video for you. I love to knit. As I said in the tutorial, I am making the little baby hats for the babies in the hospital. This great idea came to my mind and I thought, why not? You can get all different sizes of looms. It is so handy to have this equipment because if it’s a cold wintery day you never have to go out and buy a hat why not knit one? Our Friendship Assembly

Today we are writing this blog about Primary 7a’s class assembly. Since we are focusing on Article 15 – you have the right to be with friends and join or set up clubs, unless this breaks the rights of others, our assembly was all about friendship. In the last few weeks we have been learning about being a good friend and how to help our buddies in P1 make friends. In the assembly we thought would make it funny and put the Great British Bake Off (The TV show) but instead we called it the Great Whinhill Bake Off. The hosts for the Great Whinhill Bake Off were Jamie Hollywood and Ellie Berry with their glamorous, fabulous and totally exotic assistant…Joanna Jelly (aka Scott Orr)! They were really funny! They told us all about the qualities of a good friend for s recipe for friendship.

An important part of our assembly was the story called ‘The Crayon Box that Talked’. Some pupils dressed up as a colour and acted like a crayon. In the beginning they all hated each other but then at the end of the story they became friends. Things we had to focus on were having a loud, clear voice, thinking about our body language and responding to the audience. We found it difficult at first but we all were delighted with our performance! At the end we sang a song called Count on me by Bruno Mars. The video was animated and it had the lyrics so everyone could sing along!

Being a better Blogger

We are P7a from Whinhill Primary! We have just started blogging this year and we have enjoyed it so far. P7 are participating in the Blogging bootcamp and this is our first post with many more to come. Recently we have just set up our e-portfolios and are going to write our first posts about our learning soon. As we are new to blogging, we have made a blogging guide to help us become more confident. Me and the class all suggested some names for the guide and everybody liked my idea ‘Blogopedia’ because its like wikipedia and you can look at it for information on how to blog. I think my idea is #Epic!

BLOG WATCHWhen we were writing the guide we all thought of things to be written that Mrs Hunter and anyone reading it would want to know about our learning in P7. We thought it was a good idea to add a photo of our learning too. I hope lots of people visit the blog and like our Blogopedia.

We  write our name on the Blog Watch display in class when we are blogging. There are lots of ideas on that board where we can look at examples of good blog posts.

Meeting our Buddies!

This is our first post on our new class blog! On the first day of school we got to meet our P1 buddies. We were a wee bit nervous because we were not sure what it would be like to be responsible for someone new in the school. It has been lots of fun with our buddies so far and we been involved in lots of activities to help them settle into school. Some of the P1s are really shy and some are really energetic and excited about school! Outside in the playground we drew with chalk and a lot of the Primary 7s got chalk all over them! We had to help them write their name and draw a picture beside it. It was good to get a chance to talk and get to know our buddies better.  In class, we talked about asking them open questions to start a conversation and it really worked! Look at our photos at the bottom of the page.

Each morning we go down to Primary 1 and make sure that they are safe in the playground and help them get changed into their sandshoes for class. If we see our buddies crying in the morning about missing Mums and Dads we calm them by reading them a book or trying to make them happy and take their mind off it. We would like to say thank you to Mrs Hunter and Mrs Reid  for helping us with our buddies that we love so much.
