Description
The English curriculum aims to motivate and challenge learners in real life contexts, while developing their skills in Literacy. Learners will be engaged in a number of activities to develop their critical reading and listening skills as well as their ability to independently understand, analyse and evaluate level appropriate spoken and written text.
In addition, learners will develop their writing skills and knowledge of language to develop individual folios of writing. Oral presentation skills and the ability to contribute effectively to group discussion will also feature throughout the course as one of the core Literacy and English skills developed.
The course provides flexibility, personalisation and choice to enable learners to achieve in different ways and at a different pace. The course provides opportunities for learners to build on prior learning and is designed to be accessible. The internally assessed units are organised by the receptive (listening and reading) and productive (talking and writing) skills of language.
Learners will develop their skills in reading, writing, listening and talking in the Broad General Education, and will move on to National courses in S4.
National Courses
National 3 comprises of three internally assessed units: Understanding Language (reading and listening), Producing Language (writing and talking) and Literacy. At this level pupils will develop their skills to understand and produce simple language texts.
National 4 comprises of four internally assessed units: Analysis and Evaluation (reading and listening), Creation and Production (writing and talking), Literacy and Added Value. At this level pupils will develop their skills to understand and create straightforward language texts. In addition, pupils will complete an independent research task and written/oral assignment to demonstrate their skill set.
National 5 comprises of two internally assessed units: Spoken Language Unit (talking and listening) and Literacy (reading, writing, listening and talking). At this level pupils will develop their skills to understand and create detailed language texts. In addition, pupils will submit a folio of writing to the SQA for external examination. In the final exam, pupils will answer understanding, analysis and evaluation questions about an unseen detailed text; answer textual analysis questions on a Scottish text which they have previously studied in class; and develop a critical essay about a text studied in class in response to unseen questions.
Higher comprises of two internally assessed units: Analysis and Evaluation and Creation and Production. At this level pupils will develop their skills to understand and create complex language texts. In addition, pupils will submit a folio of writing to the SQA for external examination. In the final exam pupils will answer understanding, analysis and evaluation questions about 2 unseen complex texts; answer textual analysis questions on a Scottish text which they have previously studied in class; and develop a critical essay about a text studied in class in response to unseen questions.
Advanced Higher will challenge learners to examine and compare complex texts, as well as develop complexity and sophistication within their own writing. Learners will embark on developing their own dissertation which critically compares two complex texts of their own choosing.
