Head Teacher Update – 18th May 2020

18th May 2020

Dear Parent / Carer,

I trust this continues to find you and your family well.

As you are aware, our new timetable was not scheduled to change until the 1st June 2020 which has meant that the options process has had to be undertaken remotely. Further to my letter, dated 7th May 2020, I am delighted to inform you that we are now in a position to begin changing timetable. This will involve all year groups moving up a year – although S1 and S3 will remain in the Teams that they are already in. Pupils will not receive an actual timetable at this stage but if they are in S2, S4 or S5, they will be added to the relevant Microsoft Team which will link to their options.

This week, if your child is in S2, S4 or S5, they will receive an e mail which will confirm their options. If you have any questions about this, please contact Ms McCauley through e mail: gw10mccauleyjan@glow.ea.glasgow.sch.uk. Throughout the course of next week your child will be added to new Teams and introductory work will be set. If your child needs any support with GLOW or Teams, please contact their DHT.

I am conscious that this is a really uncertain time and the prospect of changing year group, particularly remotely, could be another challenge. However, listening to your feedback about home learning, we hope that this will enable our students to engage more with the learning activities being posted. Furthermore, your child will remain with the same Depute Head Teacher, rather than this changing too. This will hopefully provide some continuity for both you and your child. Pastoral Care and our SLT are in contact with your child every week so please encourage them to continue to e mail them if they are feeling anxious or if they have any questions. We are still very much happy to support you and your families, even from a distance. I attach again contact information for ease of access.

This week I will also be sending all year groups a video message through their year group Team so please encourage them to access this.

Over the course of the next few weeks, we will also be posting study skills supports – through their year group Team – which will hopefully help your child to engage with the work that is being posted. We will also be celebrating the achievements of some of the work that has been completed during this lockdown period through our school Twitter and our website – we hope you enjoy seeing what our students are producing. Please encourage your child to share their work with their class teacher so that they can be part of this.

Unfortunately I am not in a position to give you any further information but please be assured that I am working closely with Glasgow City Council, my HT colleagues and the staff of Shawlands Academy as we try to plan for a return to school, whenever that will be. I am also working closely with our Parent Council and I would like to thank them for their on-going communication and help as this situation continues.

Thank you for your continued support, particularly as we try to work remotely with you and your family. Please do not hesitate to contact us if there is anything further that we can do to support you during this time.

Very best wishes,

Mrs Pauline Carr

It is really important that you keep your brains active – don’t become rusty!

We know that this is a really unusual time and it might be hard for you to adjust. Do what you can, when you can.

Remember if you need to talk to someone, email your Pastoral Care Teacher or Miss Sinclair/ Mrs Cutler.

We are still here for you and want to do everything we can to support you.

If you are having trouble logging on or do not have access to IT, then please try to let us know.

Shawlands Academy: S3 Home Learning Plan April 20202

We are keen to ensure that you receive as much support and communication, as possible over the coming weeks as you try to manage “Home Learning “in very different circumstances.

Some of you will be on the front line, some are trying to work from home, and some are caring for our elderly family members, our own children and ourselves.

It is important to remember that you have not chosen to educate your children at home. None of us have chosen the circumstances we find ourselves in. You are supporting your child to learn at home in whatever ways you can. Thank you for all your efforts thus far and we hope that having a more structured approach will help you to continue to do this.

From now on, S3 pupils can expect their subjects to post work on Teams each week. There will be RE work posted on a Monday, PSE on a Wednesday and PE on a Friday, in addition to this. The timetable is blank so that pupils can complete how they want to balance work for each week. They may need your help with this.

Staff will be setting home learning tasks / activities, which pupils have one week to complete. If they can, they can send completed tasks to their teacher. This could be a photo of their work or a video clip or a response in writing or something else that they have agreed. They will then receive communication / general feedback from a member of staff in the department.

We know that this is a really unusual time and it might be hard for you to adjust. Do what you can, when you can – if home learning is not working on a particular day, that’s okay. Remember if you need to talk to someone, you can e mail your child’s Pastoral Care Teacher or DHT, Mr Symon. We are still here for you and want to do everything we can to support you.

Friday, 3rd April 2020

Dear Shawlands’ Family,

I hope you and your family are well and staying safe.

Thank you for all your support and patience as we adapt to the situation we all find ourselves in.

This spring break will be markedly different for all of us as we will not be able to do the things we normally would or see the people who mean a great deal to us. However, it is important that you take some time with your family and do not worry about school work for the next two weeks. I am writing to all our students to remind them of some of the other things they can do – such as, reading a book or baking – so that they keep their brains active!

After spring break, we will be issuing guidelines for families and students to help with this ever-changing situation. We appreciate that this is a difficult time for many of you but please remember that we will continue to work together to support each other.

If you have a child in the current S4-S6, you should have received further communications from me today regarding SQA. If you have not received this, you can access it through the S4 or S5 /6 pupil tab on this website.

Please look after each other, continue to follow health advice and keep well.

Very best wishes,

Mrs Pauline Carr

Head Teacher
