P4-7 Writing Awards

P1 -3 Writing Awards

P1-3 Writing Award

The children who represent the voice of the pupils in Mrs McKee’s ‘How Good Is OUR School’ COGS group requested the return of the Star Writer award and the Numeracy Award at our assemblies.  They wrote letters to the teachers justifying their reasons why these curricular areas should be recognised regularly instead of waiting until the annual Prize Giving.

The staff unanimously agreed and here are our first worthy winners of the Star Writer award.  Well done!

You can see their fabulous pieces of writing displayed in the corridor as you enter the main hall.

World Book Day

What a pity we shall not be in school tomorrow for World Book Day, however, any ECC, or Primary 1 to Primary 4 children who would like to still wear their costumes can do so on Monday instead.

What better way to spend a chilly World Book Day than curling up with a good book – happy reading everyone!

ECC Nursery Rhyme Data…

We have been focusing on developing the children’s awareness of Nursery Rhymes by focusing on one rhyme each week within the ECC and sharing this on the blog and communication board for you to do at home with your child. Nursery Rhymes aid your child’s phonological awareness and assists with reading and spelling at a later stage. Please have a look below at the statistics gathered from before we focused on the rhyme in partnership with yourselves at home and after regularly singing the rhyme in the ECC and at home. The data shows a 23% increase in the amount of children who were able to recite Hickory, Dickory Dock in the morning session and a 13% increase in the PM session. Please continue to focus on our rhyme of the week at home as this has a positive impact on your child’s development. Our Rhyme of the week is Twinkle, Twinkle little star.

World Book Day

This year World Book Day is on Thursday 1st March. Today the Literacy Group started gathering ideas for this special event.

Literacy Group

At participation group time, the Literacy Group has been carrying out an audit of all our reading books. If anyone thinks they have a book at home which should be returned to school, we would be very grateful.

Primary 7 today – pantomimes and pen pals!

Last month Primary 7 pupils wrote their first pen pal letters to an English speaking school in Spain. This was made possible by a former pupil of Gargieston who is now a teacher in the school, contacting us and coming in to visit when home in Kilmarnock.

Well, the first letters back arrived in the post today and there was much excitement in our class!

We learned about all sorts from their favourite films and foods to Spanish customs and cuisine. Our children were not impressed at the thought of octopus and potatoes!

Now, we have made Christmas cards to send back and will pop in another letter before the Christmas holidays.

Not forgetting we had a terrific morning at the pantomime – oh yes we did!!

Pantomime and pen pals 🙂

Song of the week…

This weeks song is Rudolph the red nosed reindeer. We will be singing this within the ECC. Please sing this with your child at home and try out the Makaton. Singing aids your child’s knowledge of  how language is construction and aids with language acquisition. This is why it’s important to regularly sing to or with your child.

If Makaton is something you are interested in and have been implementing with your child please have a look on facebook for Makaton Ayrshire. This facebook page posts information in regards to communication, up and coming courses and a variety of signs. At the moment they are doing an advent of Makaton where a video is posted daily of different Christmas signs.  Please see the facebook page for a video of Rudolph the red nosed reindeer (Look out for Miss Clark in the video) or here below is a link from you tube which demonstrates the Makaton.
