Primary 6 and 7 Maths Roadshow

This morning we attended a maths roadshow as part of STEM fortnight.  There were lots of fantastic interactive challenges.  Some of them really made us think and others really challenged our patience and perseverance.

Primary 6 STEM – Electric Cars

We had a visit from Mrs Kennedy (Fraser’s mum),  telling us all about electric cars and climate change.   It was very interesting to hear about how electric cars work and how councils etc. are providing more places to charge cars.

We found out that Scotland wants to have no cars using fossil fuels by 2032.

Thank you Mrs Kennedy.

Base 4 Mrs Cameron

STEM

Base 4 are very lucky to have Mrs Cameron ( who works at Spirit) coming in over the next 2 weeks to work on a series of lessons based on flight .  Yesterday we found out about drag, thrust, lift and weight and why they are all needed to make a plane fly.   We made some tricky paper aeroplanes and had fun getting them to fly.

We are looking forward to Mrs Cameron returning on Thursday for more experiments.

Visit by Microsoft to P6

On Tuesday straight after lunch P6 were given a visit by Microsoft to teach us all about Microbits and coding. We were given a USB cable, a battery pack and a microbit chip. We went onto a website called Microsoft Make Code and clicked on the first option which was Microbit. On the simulator we were taught how to code pictures onto our microbit and if we plugged in the USB it appeared on the chip. First we learnt how to code a heart shape that flashed in the centre as a basic of code. Then we were allowed to create our own pictures on the simulator. And for a challenge we had to code a game of rock paper scissors on our chips. After that we could make as many pictures on the microbits we wanted for the last couple of minutes. All of P6 would like to give a huge thanks for Microsoft and the teachers from  St Mungo’s High School and all the people at Microsoft. We really enjoyed playing with the microbits.

JRSO More Parking Issues

The other day we posted about parking issues within the school grounds, however we have received complaints and concerns  from several residents about inconsiderate parking in the streets around the school.

Please do not:  park on the zig-zag lines; on grass verges, block runways, park on the corner or move cones.

We are also worried that children cannot see leaving the school gates because of parked cars.

Please park sensibly, carefully and considerately.

Parking

The JRSO have noticed several problems in the car park again.

Please remember the parking area closest to the school is for staff and blue badge holders only.

The area next to the garden is for drop off only.

The roundabout should never be used to park on!

Please help us by following these simple parking rules and keep children safe.  Also, pass this information on to whoever brings/picks up your child from ECC and school.

Missing Jacket

A pupil in Base 4 has lost a Navy Michael Kors jacket.   Could we check all similar jackets at home please.

Thank you.

Primary 7, Arran 2018

Here is a little bit of information for the parents who did not manage to attend the meeting on Monday night.

We are going to Lochranza again, from Tuesday 8th of May until Friday 11th May.

Activities will include, abseiling, gorge walking,

coastal walk, cycling, seashore safari and bushcraft skills. The centre organise various activities for the evening.

No need for any expensive equipment, if the children don’t have the correct kit, the centre will supply it. Wellies, walking boots and a waterproof jacket and trousers (if you have them) would be ideal.

Torch/nightlight if unsure of the dark – not essential.

The trip will cost approx. £230, but this may go up or down depending on numbers.  We would love all of  Primary 7 to come.

You will receive a letter soon to confirm your child’s interest and a deposit will be required.   Further information will be given later on in the year.

Regards,

Carol-Ann Mackie
