Pupils at St Andrews Primary, Rothesay are pictured holding just a few of the postcards received over a weekend in May from all over the world.
Well done to everyone who took part in the Postcard to Rothesay World Record Event. Over 400 postcards have been received from as far a field as Japan, Canada, Australia, Spain, Italy! More info about the record to follow.
The plan is to have all the postcards on display in the Cabbie’s Rest at Rothesay Pier in late July, actual date to be finalised.

St Joseph’s Scoops the Double!
Two pupils from St Joseph’s Primary School in Helensburgh won both available prizes from the primary section of the Helensburgh Garelochside’s Rotary Club ‘Helensburgh Young Photographer 2013’ competition recently. All children who took part in the competition were invited to the Rosslea Hotel on the evening of Monday 10 June where the winners were announced. A number of the St Joseph’s children and their parents attended and were delighted to see Charlotte O’Hara of P6 take the runner-up prize with Hannah Thomson of P7 lifting the winning plaque. Both girls and their parents were delighted!

Malawian Rice Farmers visit Barcaldine Primary
Barcaldine Primary School children were full of questions for the two Malawian Rice Farmers when they visited the area recently. These farmers are here to promote Kilombero rice to become a Fairtrade product.
Barcaldine Primary have recently started working towards becoming a Fairtrade School and this easily tied in with our learning on how to achieve that.
Port Charlotte learn about the Lords of the Isles
On Thursday the 16th of May Port Charlotte School went on an excellent trip to Finlaggan and Dunyveg. P5/6/7 went with Mr Mackie, Mrs MacTaggart, Mrs McLellan and Mrs Coughlin. We went because our topic is the Lords of the Isles and we wanted to know more about them.
We found out that the Lords of the Isles were only MacDonalds, they could not be MacLeans. Women couldn’t be Lords of the Isles either in those days. They ruled right down the west coast.

Southend and Saint Columba
Pupils in P4-7 have been learning about Southend’s connection with Saint Columba as part of local celebrations to mark 1450 years since the saint landed in Scotland from Ireland. With local amateur historians they visited the site of the Saint’s footsteps. The choir performed a Gaelic song at the annual Saint Columba Conventicle also held at the footsteps.
Craignish Primary clay dig
Originally inspired by African mud dolls sent to us by Olngarua School in Kenya, Miss Brown and the Primary 1-4 pupils from Craignish Primary have been involved in an exciting clay dig project this term. The aim of this project was to enable the children to make direct comparisons between our culture and those of children living in Africa. We had an amazing time on our ‘clay day’ where we got to dig local clay, listen to African stories inside a tipi, create woven willow balls and create patterned clay tiles by pressing natural materials into them.
Cardross Primary Green Day
The Cardross Primary Green Day took place last week. The event was planned by our Eco teacher Mrs Girling to incorporate the whole school focus this term on the Rainforest. The pupils were taking part in rainforest and eco themed activities all day. Some of the highlights were; Amazon Micro-Parks, Rainforest Story Sticks and Smelly Cocktails.
Geocaching blog
This term, Primary 5-7 pupils took part on Geocaching activities in and around our local countryside. Geocaching is an outdoor activity in which pupils who took part had to use GPS navigational devices to hide and seek containers called ‘geocaches’. Each cache contained a log book which was signed and dated on discovery using our official code name ‘Hermi-trailers’; some of the larger caches we found also had trade-able items inside and we placed a track-able item inside one of our caches -its mission: ‘to travel as far as possible’.
S2 History pupils get the chance to dig up the past!
On Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd May a return visit of around forty S2 Lochgilphead High School History pupils took place at Dun Muirich medieval fort at Tayvallich to take part in an actual archaeological dig, thanks again to the generosity of Kate Moody of Kilmartin House Museum and Roddy Reagan, the archaeologist in charge . The weather was good over the two days, and the minibus swiftly took four runs back and forth to the site, accompanied again by either Mr Wire or Mr Kemp of the Social Subjects Department.

GARELOCHHEAD PRIMARY SCHOOL – Awesome Ardroy Adventures!!
Last week pupils from Garelochhead Primary went to Ardroy Outdoor Education centre, Lochgoilhhead for a residential trip.
Working towards their ‘John Muir’ award, they focussed on the adventurous discovery and exploration of wild places, and actively conserved areas of woodland.
Other outdoor activities included gorge walking, abseiling, night orienteering and negotiating their way through a labyrinth.

Duke of Edinburgh
Three pupils from Campbeltown Grammar School recently completed an overnight camp in preparation for the completion of their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh (D of E) Award. Jo Chinn, Liam MacCallum and Alice Morton hiked part of the Kintyre Way and camped overnight at Bordadubh. They experienced every kind of weather – snow, sun and gales on their hike!

As long ago as 1988, when Mrs Lesley Clark, Principal Teacher of German and French in Dunoon Grammar School, applied for funding to start an Exchange with Germany, she could never have imagined that she would still be organising the same Exchange in 2013.

Maps, compasses, questions, challenges, songs and marshmallows round the campfire, sunny days and no midgies.
Kilninver primary went camping overnight on Kerrera with Stramash and returned with rosy cheeks.
INDIA CONNECTIONS
Port Ellen Primary 3&4 and 6&7 have been learning about India. In the topic we have had Glow Meets with teachers and students at Arwachin Bharti Bhawan School in Delhi in India. We got the chance to ask them questions about life in India. It was surprising that we have so much in common; they like TV like The Simpsons and Family Guy, music like Taylor Swift and films like James Bond, and their English was much better than our Hindi! ‘Message in a Bottle’
Primary 4 at Dunoon Primary could not believe their eyes when Jake a member of their class came into school carrying a bottle with a message inside, because they had been discussing messages in bottles in class. At first they thought Jake was playing a joke. The bottle had to be cut open to get the message out and to everyones surprise it really was a message in a bottle! Ulva School make Flowers in the Forest
The children and staff from Ulva Primary School had a brilliant time making big flowers and ‘planting’ them in the woodland at Calgary Art in Nature.
We were pleased to see the sun was shining on Friday as we headed off to Calgary with our waterproofs packed in our bags. When we arrived we met Symon and Kim from Vision Mechanics who were going to show us how to make the flowers. We had a lovely walk around the woodland looking at the Giant Heads and the other sculptures in the Forest.
Port Ellen Pre 5 Unit, Our Lighthouse Topic
Port Ellen Pre 5 unit have thoroughly enjoyed their Lighthouse topic. The topic was based on the well known book The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch by Ronda and David Armitage. The topic was packed with numerous learning opportunities. The children planned and build their own lighthouse, they enjoyed making lunch for each other in their very own Mrs Grinling’s kitchen, we planned and built seagull proof picnic baskets and many more fun activities.

Barcaldine Keeping Scotland Tidy
Barcaldine Primary School went along to Sutherland’s Grove to take part in the National Clean Up Scotland initiative. The children enjoyed the glorious weather to delve into the forest in search of rubbish! We were very pleased with our fairly empty black bags – the forest was very clean!! We did manage to find one peculiar piece of rubbish as one pupil seems to do every year – a rolled piece of tin!
The Beaver Academy
Ashfield Primary have been working alongside Oly Hemmings from the Scottish Beaver Trial to develop the links between the school and the beaver project. As the local school to the trial site, pupils, parents and staff were keen to make the most of this fantastic resource. The pupils have been guinea pigs for a new workshop being developed and have recently visited the trial site to view the beaver dam. The pupils are now the proud adoptive parents of Millie the beaver and will be following her progress as time goes on.
Come and Play Week at the Stramash Outdoor Nursery
It’s been a busy week at the Stramash Outdoor Nursery, with over 60 parents and carers joining the children in the great outdoors. Lots of seeds and flowers have been planted, as well as making flower pots out of recycled cans. Parents have been involved in storytelling and some have even been climbing the trees with the children and making mud stew in their outdoor kitchen.
