On Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd May a return visit of around forty S2 Lochgilphead High School History pupils took place at Dun Muirich medieval fort at Tayvallich to take part in an actual archaeological dig, thanks again to the generosity of Kate Moody of Kilmartin House Museum and Roddy Reagan, the archaeologist in charge . The weather was good over the two days, and the minibus swiftly took four runs back and forth to the site, accompanied again by either Mr Wire or Mr Kemp of the Social Subjects Department.
Roddy Reagan gave the pupils an interesting update on the dig results so far, before handing trowels and sieves to our fearless archaeologists for the day! Each group had a section of trench to excavate and swiftly dug up various finds -mainly animal bones, bits of pots and shells as the focus was the midden area of the previous dwelling. Nevertheless an ancient piece of flint and a sixteenth century clay pipe were also found by a couple of pupils once the dirt had been sieved away! All pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would love to go back! They are looking forward to Mr Reagan visiting the school in the new session to take a workshop, outlining the finds and significance for the history of this area.
See some of the pupil comments below and some of the pictures from last week. “Find of the day went to Arran Robertson who found the flint to light fire…” – Kieran Kirkhope “We found a lot of shells and bones of animals it was really good” – Jack Lugue “Loved it!” – Shane Johnstone & Hughie Townsley “Would really like to go back again.
