INDIA CONNECTIONS

Port Ellen Primary 3&4 and 6&7 have been learning about India. In the topic we have had Glow Meets with teachers and students at Arwachin Bharti Bhawan School in Delhi in India. We got the chance to ask them questions about life in India. It was surprising that we have so much in common; they like TV like The Simpsons and Family Guy, music like Taylor Swift and films like James Bond, and their English was much better than our Hindi! We wanted to look at the differences in the festivals we celebrate. We told them about Easter and Christmas and made a DVD of our Burns Ceilidh for them to see; our schools Gaelic folk group did their first international performance for them over Glow.
They told us about their celebration of Holi, and we researched other celebrations like Ramanavami and Maha Shivaratri. After that we celebrated Holi by getting coloured powder and throwing it over each other, which was fun. In India they did research on Burns and held their own Burns celebration. We were surprised to see a photo of the children in the school playing the bagpipes. Unfortunately we can’t do our next glow meet with them at the moment because they have had to close their school because of the scorching temperatures! But we are hoping their headteacher might come and visit us on Islay soon.
