Ulva School make Flowers in the Forest

The children and staff from Ulva Primary School had a brilliant time making big flowers and ‘planting’ them in the woodland at Calgary Art in Nature.
We were pleased to see the sun was shining on Friday as we headed off to Calgary with our waterproofs packed in our bags. When we arrived we met Symon and Kim from Vision Mechanics who were going to show us how to make the flowers. We had a lovely walk around the woodland looking at the Giant Heads and the other sculptures in the Forest.

As we walked around we also looked at the plant life and collected leaves, lichen, moss and other interesting things for our flowers. We made the petals for the flowers from pieces of willow bent into an oval shape. We wrapped tissue paper around the willow and painted it with PVA glue, then we put our interesting objects between the tissue paper and put more glue on. Luckily the sun was shining and our petals dried quickly.
The middle of the flower was made from a piece of wood that we painted in lovely, bright colours. Then the petals were attached to the middle. There were 7 petals on each flower ….. so we even did some number work, calculating how many more petals we needed for our flowers.

We were very proud of our big flowers, planted in the woodland. Don’t they look beautiful?

  1. I think your flowers do look beautiful – the background of the fresh green beech leaves I think really sets them off perfectly.

I am sure lots of people will enjoy them when they walk in the woods.
