Transition Tuesdays at Tarbert!

Primary 7s from Tarbert, Clachan and Gigha primaries have been making an early start on transition to secondary this year. Each term since August, pupils have spent a day together in Tarbert Academy, getting to know each other and secondary staff. Starting just before Easter, pupils have been spending every Tuesday at Tarbert, with weekly lessons with Mrs Connor in English, Mr Grace in Maths, Mrs Inglis in French and Mr Sandercock in PE.

St Mun’s Guitar Project

The Primary 6/5 pupils from St Muns Primary in Dunoon, recently spent two days visiting the Technical Department in Dunoon Grammar School, making their own guitars. Having been given a basic specification for a guitar, the pupils came up with their own unique designs and with the help of Mr Mollins and some S3 pupils, who acted as team leaders, they constructed the guitar parts from wood and pieced them together.

New Argyll and Bute Literacy webpage!

The Argyll and Bute Literacy Experience (ABLE 2) is now live. With information for parents / carers, learners and for staff it’s the place to go for support and resources on all things literacy related. Learners from school age to adult will find useful links and resources while parents and carers will find advice and help to support them on all stages of their child’s journey from pre-birth to Highers and Advanced Highers. Staff will find examples of good practice, links to useful websites and guidance on a range of strategies from reciprocal reading to supporting learners with literacy difficulties within the classroom. The website isn’t yet fully populated so there will be some gaps, but please leave feedback and comments or email Clare Bryden, PT Literacy and let us know what else you’d like to see included. “Lost at Sea” in Kirn

Catherine Wheels Theatre Company visited Cowal Schools at Dunoon Grammar School this week. “Lost at Sea” was a production about the scientific tracking of a shipment of rubber ducks which had fallen overboard. The play was performed in the round, and children of Toward, Kilmodan, Kirn, Strone and Strachur Primaries enjoyed a funny “out-of-the-box” dramatic experience.

‘Father of the iPod’ surprises DGS Pupils with Words of Support

A class of S3 Business pupils at Dunoon Grammar school received a pleasant surprise last week when Tony Fadell – dubbed the Father of the iPod – tweeted words of encouragement for a learning experience the pupils were working on.

The pupils studying Business were working on a creative team exercise – tasked to rebrand Apple’s iconic iPod and devise an effective marketing-mix to breathe new life into the flagging sales of the once all conquering multimedia player.

Spotify in the DGS Spotlight to celebrate International Women’s Day

Budding Business & Computing entrepreneurs from Dunoon Grammar school participated in an exclusive Question and Answer session with senior executives of the successful technology company Spotify – to mark International Women’s Day on 8 March 2017.

Spotify is a music, podcast, and video streaming service with over 100 million users across the globe

Dunoon Grammar was the only school in Scotland to take part and one of only four schools from across the UK involved in the event organised by Apps for Good.

Dunoon pupils scoop top award at national event

A group of pupils from Dunoon Grammar School excelled in a national event last week when they scooped the top prize.

S1 students from the school’s business and computing department beat off stiff competition from across Scotland when they won Apps for Good’s first ever Scottish event.

Dunoon Grammar Legal Eagles Soar on Work Visit

Three Dunoon Grammar School pupils experienced a day in the life of an active Criminal Defence lawyer during a visit to McCusker, McElroy & Gallanagh last Friday.

The three soon-to-be Law School students – Georgia Brown, Georgia Wallace and Cambeul Walker – shadowed Terry Gallanagh, a partner at the Paisley based Solicitors.

Crofting Connections at Parklands School

We would like to share with everyone our project in association with Crofting Connections.

This term the Selkie class are looking at the life of a sheep, with the visit of sheep and lambs to school, dying fleece, spinning, weaving and felting. Today we had a visit from Joy Dunlop who taught us some Gaelic, traditional Gaelic waulking songs and step dancing. She was amazing and we really enjoyed her time with us.

JLB 2017 Burns Competition Winners

John Logie Baird Primary are delighted with their recent success in the Helensburgh District Burns Club competition held in Hermitage Academy last week. Children from primaries 5, 6 and 7 took part in the poetry and song recital categories. Eilidh Jakeman in Primary 5 won third place in the P4 and 5 poetry recital category, whilst Eden Sanderson won first place in the P6 and 7 song category. Her acapella rendition of Auld Lang Syne to the original melody impressed the judges and also won her title of over all 2017 competition winner.

Recently Rockfield had an extremely successful visit to Oban High School to compete in the annual Maths Festival. Rockfield pupils won both sections, one on practical problem solving and one on written problem solving. Well done and congratulations to all those who took part in this competition. Thanks also go to Oban High School Maths Department for organising this and to Margaret MacLeod for taking the Rockfield teams to the venue.

Success for Mid Argyll at a prestigious brass band championships.

ljc-junior-ensemble-winners-4-jan-2017Congratulations to four Lochgilphead Joint Campus pupils that have been crowned the Besson Scottish Junior Ensemble Champions. Myrtle Turnbull (S1, Cornet), Niah Martin (P6, Trumpet), Emily Carter (P6, Horn) and Leila Ritchie (P6, Trombone) competed at the competition last Saturday in Livingston after qualifying to represent the West of Scotland last October.

Rothesay Primary Nativity!

rps-nativity-2-dec-2016The boys and girls of Primary 1 brought a fabulous ‘Noisy Nativity’ to the United Church of Bute on Wednesday 14th December. The whole school joined in with all the songs with such gusto that Rev Jones said the roof nearly came off the church! Our P7 narrators helped keep everything on track and we all ooohed as the kings presented their gifts to the baby Jesus.

Book Week Scotland

rps-book-week-1-dec-2016Book Week Scotland at Rothesay Joint Campus This year when the Bookbug Primary 1 Family bags arrived, they were taken away by S2 who planned a series of lessons to bring the books alive. With Mrs Sullivan and Mr Gault to help, the pupils got together to read the stories and do follow up activities to help really understand the characters and the different story lines.
