Clachan and Skipness Generation ScienceGeneration Science(an amazing science group)came to teach the interesting art of science!! First fuel hunters, the constructive pair of oil-mazing enginers as well as the robo-tastic Lego-mindstorms. The pupils had a range of tricky challenges having to use their brains and robots to complete them. The children were no doubt all loving the robot disco! St Andrew's dragon at mountstuartPupils at St Andrew’s Primary have been helping to pilot digital art projects using paint.net. They have been improving their creative technology skills to search, store, manilpulate images and tell stories. St George’s Day on Thursday inspired a dragon invasion across Bute for P4/5. This dragon was spotted by Erin, of Mrs Spencer’s P4/5 class, on the lawn at Mount Stuart another was seen by Emma attacking an ogre at the Winter Gardens!

DPS Glow in the Dark Science 2Dunoon Primary Celebrate the International Year of Light The reallysmallscience group, from Strathclyde University, helped pupils at Dunoon Primary to celebrate the International Year of Light 2015.
Classes took part in ‘nanoglow’ fluorescent workshops to learn why light is so important and discover natural and everyday items that glow. Pupils then used invisible ink pens to write secret messages and produce their very own glowing artwork.

Bowmore 4th Green FlagBowmore Primary have done it again! By hard work and dedication, we have earned our fourth Green Flag as an eco-school! Not only do we maintain our eco way of life by litter-picking, saving energy, composting peelings and running a healthy tuck, we have made time to improve our school grounds. Our raised beds and rockery are now well established and used to their full potential.

Having completed and sent off their designs for the Scottish Engineering Leaders Award for STEM 2014/15 where they had been challenged to interpret the question “If you were an engineer in Scotland – what would you do?” the children were delighted to hear back from the organisers of the competition.

Health Day Salen PS2Primary 6 pupils from Salen, Lochdonhead and Ulva Primary schools treated all staff and pupils to a lunch of locally produced food as the highlight of Health Day where the theme was Healthy Eating. They took over the school kitchen for the morning and, under the guidance of sous chef Michael Shannon from the Western Isles Hotel, assisted by Iona, and Eilidh and Debbie from the school kitchen, they prepared and served a feast of wonderful Mull produce which had been kindly donated by local producers.

First we learned about basic food hygiene.
Next we baked and tasted several different pizza base recipes and judged them on the criteria of cost, healthiness, appearance and taste.

St Muns Eden 3After scooping the coveted Eden Award, at the Rolls Royce Science Awards, held at the Science Centre in London, last November, with their Biodiversity project entitled ‘If You Go Down In The Woods Today’, the children of Primary 7, along with their teacher, set about planning the 1,100 mile round trip visit to The Eden Project, St. Austell in Cornwall.

St Muns STEM 1The pupils of St. Mun’s Primary have just completed their designs ahead of the deadline for the Scottish Engineering Leaders Award for STEM 2014/15. The Awards challenged Primary and Secondary school pupils across Scotland to research and interview inspiring engineers, providing them with a fantastic opportunity to engage with real engineers who could convey the importance of STEM in their daily working lives.

St Joes LIVING EGGS 2‘One of the best projects our school has ever done!’….quote from one of the admiring parents as she viewed the newly hatched chicks recently at St. Joseph’s Primary School in Helensburgh. 11 fertilised eggs had been purchased by the school in the middle of March to bring alive the learning in P3 and P6 as they studied ‘The Owl Who was Afraid of The Dark’ and ‘Animals around the World’ respectively.

Outdoor Learning at Minard

Minard Outdoor 3The children at Minard Primary School have been using their grounds to enhance their learning. Recently they have been hard at work designing a trim trail round the playground using natural resources. The children do laps at least three times a week and then convert the metres into kms then into miles. Next, they mark their progress by plotting the joint distance travelled on a map of Scotland. They hope to reach John O’Groats by the summer holidays! (They’ve reached Cairndow so far.)

St Josephs STRATHCLYDE GLASGOW (2)Friday 20th March, 2015 saw the post-graduate teacher training students from Strathclyde University revisit St. Joseph’s in Helensburgh to complete their Sciences VIP (Vertically Integrated Project) Option module of their course with P5, P6 and P7 children. The students had first visited in February for an orientation and fact finding visit to see first-hand the progressive STEM teaching in which every pupil is involved at St. Joseph’s.

Chick, Chick, Chick!

Rosneath chick 1Primary one pupils at Rosneath Primary School have been lucky to have the Living Eggs experience in their classroom. The children watched 9 fluffy little chicks hatch and cared for them for over a week. An amazing experience that we would highly recommend!
In order to fund this Miss McLean and Primary 1 organised a Toy and Cake Sale for pupils, staff, families and friends. A fantastic total of £250 was raised!

BEAVERS AT DALINTOBER

BEAVER 2 007 comOly Hemmings from the Knapdale Beaver Trial and The Scottish Wildlife Trust visited Primary 5 in January and February to help the children learn about beavers and other Scottish wildlife and their habitats. Favourite activities were looking at animal skulls and pelts, trying to make the best dam and creating an arch of dependant plants and creatures with beavers as the keystone species. Using giant building blocks, the children showed their understanding of the food chain. A vigorous game of musical chairs demonstrated what happens when the habitat of animals is changed. The P5-7 class attended the informative and creative Marine Education Day organised by the GRAB Trust in Dunoon. They enjoyed a variety of activities, having the opportunity to listen to sealife stories, find out about sharks and seabirds and even make their own jellyfish and marine mobiles.
