Primary 1’s Book Week

Image result for book week clipart

Primary 1 have been having a great Book Week so far.

We have been reading lots of books in class, with our teacher, with our friends, with nursery children and with our primary 7 buddies. We also took some of our favourite books outside to read in the sunshine today.

We’ve had lots of fun book related activities, including painting and other art activities related to some of our favourite stories.

We have been decorating our door like a book too – we are trying to win a ‘Dress Your Door’ competition against the rest of the school (of course, ours are by far the best!).

We helped write the first chapter of a ‘School Story’ – the rest of the school will continue and finish the story.

We have also been doing lots of fab writing related to and inspired by some of our favourite books.

We’ve also been bringing in some fab photos of our ‘extreme reading’ for the competition – the winner will be announced on Friday.

There’s still lots more to come, including a school carousel (where we will hear some stories from other teachers in the school, and finally, we are really looking forward to dressing up as our favourite book character on Friday.

P1’s Fantastic Facts

Today, P1 all got together to learn some fantastic facts. Today we were learning about Spiders!

We began by reading two different stories. One was a fiction book. This means it is not real (Andrew).

The other was a non-fiction book. This means it is real (Joshua).

We learned lots of facts about spiders:

Kayleidh – they have 8 eyes

Isabella P – they have 8 legs

Matthew P – they have spinnerettes

Matthew R – these make webs

More people who help us!

Our primary one children had a fantastic day today visiting our local fire station!

The children listened well as the fireman told them what his job was. They learned all about the uniforms (did you know that most fire fighters wear yellow helmets, but the one who’s in charge wears a white helmet?!) and all about the fire engines (in Scotland they are red with blue lights – the same as the ambulance!!)

We learned that at Broxburn, all the firefighters have pagers, which beep when it’s time to go to work, but other stations have fire fighters who eat and even sleep there!

They then saw what fire fighters have to wear (Mrs Evans and Mrs Baty modeled the uniform – it was very heavy and warm!!)

We also learned what to do if we ever see someone on fire (tell them to Stop, Drop and Roll – you can see us practicing this in our photos).

After that, the children went outside to explore the fire engine. They even got a shot of a water hose out of the fire engine!

All primary 1 children were fantastic on our first trip! Thank you again to our fabulous parent helpers!

Amazing Ambulance in Primary 1!!

Today, primary 1 were lucky enough to have some very special visitors! As part of our People Who Help Us topic, we invited some paramedics to come to see the children. They told us all about their job, what they do and what equipment they use.

Some of us were allowed to dress up in their real High Vis Jacket, and their paramedics helmet. Then, we pretended Mrs Evans had been trampled by an elephant!! The paramedics put a bandage on her head (like a big plaster) and used a special machine to make sure she was feeling okay (it beeped, and had a blue wavy line on it).

Then, we went to see the ambulance!!! It was amazing! We even got to go inside! Then they put the siren on for us to hear! (See our picture with our hands over our ears … it was so loud!).

We had a really great day!!

Joshua – Paramedics have ambulances

Alfie – they wear an ambulance suit

Ava – they have a torch

Kayleidh – (how could they make sure they are seen?) you wear a jacket

Isla – (Mrs Evans should..) get away from the elephant!

Lucas – (Mrs Evans is hurt, what do we do?) phone the doctor!

James – is the number 909?

Ben – the ambulance is blue

Lucas – …and green and yellow

Matthew – the ambulance has lights

Olivia – the lights are blue, and they flash

Matthew – it has a siren, and they rescue people

Toby – they help people who get hit by a  car

Ben – they are sometimes with the fire brigade

Arran – they take you to the hospital

Dermott – St Johns hospital.

Working Hard in Primary 1a!!

We have been having so much fun and we’ve been working very hard in Primary 1a! Mrs Baty is very proud of us!!

We have been learning all about pattern. We know that pattern means ‘it is repeated’. We have been making patterns with colour using counters / cubes, and we have begun making patterns with shapes. We also made a pattern using ourselves!!! (sitting and standing).

patternpattern 2 pattern 3

Today we read the story of Elmer the Elephant. Elmer was sad because he was different from all the other elephants. He painted himself grey, but quickly realised that by embracing his unique personality and his colours, he was happier and he made everyone else happier. We then spoke about what makes us all special and unique.

We had some brilliant answers:

Joshua – I was really good at football when I was wee

Olivia- I am very good at swimming and gymnastics

Ben – When I was younger I went to football and I was really good

Toby – when I am a grown up I am going to be a really good  fireman

Rian – I am really good at football

Roman – I am really good at football and I can go under the water

Daniel – I am really good at football

Leo – I’ve played in lots of football games

Tyler – I am good at swimming underneath the water

Matthew – I am really good at football

Lucas – I am good a lot of games

Daniella – My daddy’s daddy used to live in Sri Lanka

Lennox – I can jump in the swimming pool from really high

Abdullah – I am good with my bike

Hugh-John –  I am good at swimming

Julia –  I am a perfect ballerina

Nadia – I am good at ballet

Dermott – I am really good at painting

Arran – I can speak snail

Ava – I am really good at football

We then decorated our own Elmer in our own unique way. We were excited to add glitter to make them super special.

Lovely day in Primary 1a!

Primary 1a have had another exciting day at school today.

This morning we had fun doing lots of different activities to build our fine motor skills. We drew spikes on crocodiles, we playing with jumping frogs, we made necklaces, we played with laces, and we played / danced with some playdoh to the Doh Disco (so much fun!).

After playtime (where we got to see our buddies again), we listened to the story The Rainbow Fish. We had a chat about the importance of sharing, and discussed the ways each of us have shared things with others. We then had to share the glue, scissors, and coloured paper, to make our very own Rainbow Fish. They look beautiful!

Welcome to Primary 1a

We had a fantastic morning in Primary 1a, we had so much fun and made lots new friends.

We showed Mrs Baty how clever we were by doing fantastic listening, sitting and by putting up our hands to talk.

We played some circle time games to get to know our classmates, and found out all of our favourite animals. We all seem to like cats, dogs, lions and penguins amongst others.

We had a story after break time and met our story animals. They help us to listen nicely to the stories, and sometimes ask questions too.

We even got to use some paint to make a friendship tree for our classroom (photo to follow).

Have a look below at our super smart First Day Photos. Don’t we look super?!

Keep checking back to see what else we get up to in our first week of Primary 1.

Day 8 of Primary 1’s Fitness Fortnight.

Today we had a visit from three lovely ladies from ‘West Lothian Gymnastics’. What did we do ?  Well we all went to the gym hall and had a gymnastics taster session .  It was amazing ! First of all we played a warm up game called ‘Breakfast’ before we stretched out.  We were then placed into three groups and let loose on the equipment doing forward rolls, backward rolls, handstands, kangaroo jumps and more jumping using the springboard.  We had such a good time that some of us wanted to have another go.  Well done everyone for working hard !

Fitness Fortnight continued – Karate

Primary 1a and 1b had a fantastic afternoon of Karate. Some of us have already experienced Taikwondo or Karate before, and we were keen to show off our skills.

We found out that Karate is a Japanese sport.

We began by learning how to say hello in Japanese. They are very formal. To say hello, they bow, with their hands at their sides and their feet together. The more important the person, the lower we bow. So of course, we all bowed very low to our teachers!

We then learned how to count to 5 in Japanese.

1 – ish

2 – ni

3 – san

4 – chi

5 – go

We then learned different ways to punch and kick correctly, so as not to hurt ourselves. (Of course, we learned that this is just a sport, and only to be done in safe environments, such as in karate or taikwondo classes).

We learned a forward punch – it is important to keep our thumb tucked away, punch in a straight line, and use the top part of our first 2 fingers.

We learned to a head block and a side block (to stop others punching us).

We then learned something called a slap kick – we don’t use the bottom of our foot or our toes, as this would hurt. Instead, we use the top part of our foot.

We practiced all of these on punching pads, held only by the instructors. We then got a go at using the pretend man called Bob. This was fun as he was very squishy and wobbled a lot.

We also had lots of fun playing games. These games were to help us get fit, and to exercise our muscles. We played an opposites game. We found this tricky at first but eventually got the hang of it. If the man said sit, we had to stand. If he said fight, we had to dance.

We then played a dice game. The dice had different exercises on it, including crunches, push ups, star jumps and squats. There was even a side which got the teachers to do 25 exercises! Luckily it only landed on this once. It was very funny watching Mrs Baty trying to do 25 push ups! She’s not as fit as us.

We had a really fun day, and we’re looking forward to the rest of the week.

Primary 1’s Fitness Fortnight Day 6.

We have had a fantastic day today !

What have we been up to ?

This morning we took a walk up to the ‘Range Park’.  Some of us had already been before so we were already familiar with it.  For some of though, it was our first time there and we were amazed when we saw all of the super things there.  What did we see ?

a  flying fox

a climbing wall

a roundabout

a chute

an obstacle course

a trampoline

a roundabout

and lots of lovely green grass and sand for us to run around on.

We all had lots of super fun running around and using the equipment. It was really great !  We arrived back to school just before lunchtime having walked back.  Mrs Macdonald and Mrs Baty agreed that because we walked up and down to the park we didn’t have to do our ‘Daily Mile’ back at school.  Phew !!!!

In the afternoon we had a visit from a nurse ! She told us lots of super things about our body and what we can do to keep ourselves strong and healthy.  She also showed us what a heart looks like and told us how important it is to exercise.  We learnt that children’s hearts should beat between 80-120 beats per minute.  We also learnt how important it is to wash our hands.  It was a very informative visit.  Thanks so much toMrs Purves for giving up her time to talk to us.

A big thank you also to Freya and Tavia’s mummy, Wiktoria’s mummy and Thomas’s mummy for coming along to the park this morning to help us.

P1s Fab Fitness Fortnight Continued

P1 are having a brilliant week as part of our Fitness Fortnight. We are definitely feeling very fit …. and very tired!

Today we did our daily mile again. It is 6 times around the field. We have been walking most of the way, then running the last 2 laps, although some of us are pushing ourselves further to run more. We are noticing the differences now that we’ve been doing it more continuously.

This afternoon P1a had a yoga instructor come into the class. We had lots of fun trying to get ourselves into all the different positions. They had funny names, including The Airplane, The Bridge and The Cat. We had a lot of fun! (Primary 1b will get to try this next week).

This afternoon, P1b made some healthy snacks. We actually began by trying Mrs Baty’s smoothie (she wasn’t so keen on the ones we tried yesterday, so brought in one of her homemade ones). Lots of us liked it a lot more than the others, and we found out how easy it was to make.

We then made our own yoghurt snacks. We mixed yoghurt, coco powder, honey and banana, and put it in the freezer. We were hoping to eat them this afternoon, but they weren’t frozen enough. It’ll just have to be our breakfast tomorrow! (P1a will make these next week).

Day 3 – Primary 1’s Fitness Fortnight!

We have had another great day today ! We started our day off learning about lots of different fruits. We spoke about our favourite fruits before trying some of these in the form of smoothies.

We tried a mango and passion fruit smoothie, a pineapple, banana and coconut smoothie, a strawberry and banana smoothie and a pomegranate, blueberry and acai berry smoothie. We liked some of these better than others but we still tried them and some of us even asked for more.  A big well done to everyone for trying these , we are super proud of you all.

Primary 1b voted, and we decided our favourite was the strawberry and banana smoothie, although the mango and passion fruit was a very close second.

In the afternoon we went for our mile walk.  This is starting to become easier for us and we are enjoying being out in the fresh air.

P1’s Fantastic Fitness Fortnight (Day 1)

Primary 1 have had a brilliant start to their Fitness Fortnight!

This morning we went on a trip to Craigswood Xcite Leisure Centre.

It was amazing! We had 7 different activities set up for us, and the trainers were very helpful.

We experienced shot-put, using basketballs before using REAL shotput balls!!

We tried the javelin. This was very tricky.

We tried the high jump and the long jump (I think we brought back most of the sand!)

We had a go at wellie throwing.

We had a hoop game, and we had races. We were all super fast, but eventually we got our boy and girl winners. We even got prizes!!

We had a really fab time!

ff1 ff2 ff3 ff4

Then, this afternoon, we took part in our daily mile. We are enjoying it a lot more and are finding it easier now. We are even trying to run more and more of it.

Then we had some team building games.

We had a hoop game – we had to get the hoop around the circle, without letting go of each others hands. This was quite tricky, but Mrs Baty & Mrs Gaffney’s team seemed to get the hang of it very quickly.

We then had some wheelbarrow races. Most of us went in the right direction! This was great fun though.

Finally, we played a game with a ball. We stood in a row in our team, and had to pass the ball along the line in a pattern. We were quite good at this, but rather tired by this point.

Overall, we had a fantastic day! (and what great weather it was too!)

Hopefully we’ll all sleep very well tonight, and be ready for more adventures tomorrow.

Primary 1a’s ‘Star Pupil of the Week’.

Here is Tavia ! She is our ‘Star Pupil of the Week’ in our class.  Tavia caught my eye this week for a number of reasons.  She has remembered to use her magic manners, she was VERY brave after falling and giving herself a nasty cut AND she has worked hard in her writing to make sure that she is using capital letters and full stops.  Well done Tavia, keep it up !

Primary 1 Book Week

Primary 1 have been having a fantastic week this week. We have been celebrating books in all sorts of ways!

We have had our primary 7 buddies come to read to us twice this week! We loved listening to their stories, and even read them some stories too.

We have each designed / coloured a bookmark, which Mrs Baty says she’s going to laminate for us to keep.

We have read lots of new books and our favourite books every day this week.

We chose our favourite class book (The Selfish Crocodile) and have been designing a display on our door. It is looking so good. Fingers crossed we win the competition on Friday.

We got together to write the first page of a whole school story. We began it by introducing Mr Zebra, who was getting ready for his own birthday party with Mr Tiger and Mrs Hippo. He wore a blue and red sparkly party hat, and his party t’shirt. But on his way to the party … he fell into a puddle! We can’t wait to hear how it ends.

Today we went with the primary 2’s, to the library. We saw a short performance about Badger The Mystical Mutt. He was a very cheeky dog!

We have also been looking at some of the amazing ‘Extreme Reading’ photos. We are so creative.

We are really looking forward to the rest of the week. Tomorrow we are going to have a story from a different teacher; we have our book swap; and we can’t wait for our Dress Up Day on Friday.

We began by learning how to move like different animals.

Lions – crawling and roaring!

Kangaroos – jumping with 2 feet together

Snakes – slithering along the floor and hissing

Horses – galloping with one foot in front of the other, neighing

We then had lots of fun dancing to just dance on the whiteboard. We loved the songs and even made up some fab moves of our own. We were all sweating and breathing heavily by the end, which meant we’d been exercising well. Even Mrs Baty and Mrs Macdonald were worn out!

Fossils found at St Nicholas!

Primary 1a and 1b have had a couple of very exciting afternoons !  Prof. D. Inosaur left us all a note saying that there were dinosaur fossils buried somewhere in our school ! Well, as you can imagine this caused great excitement amongst the children.  Where could they be ? And what is a fossil ?   Luckily for us, our kind professor told us in his letter all about fossils and he left us clues to find the fossils.

Our clues led us outside.  We found a spade in our playground and started digging.  Just as he had said, we found lots and lots of dinosaur fossils ! These were so cool.  We had a good look at them, guessing the name of each dinosaur from the print on the fossil.  It was great fun.

To help us to develop our understanding more, we then played a matching game.  We had to match the picture of the dinosaur to its fossil.  Thes dinosaur pictures were hidden all around our room, so we had to have a good look for them. We also made a start making our very own dinosaur fossil picture out of cotton buds.  We cannot wait until they are finished.

We had a huge surprise today after lunch to see that our dinosaur egg had hatched open  to reveal a baby dinosuar !  This caused great excitement. After a dicussion about a name, we decided to vote for the best suggestions. Our baby dino will be called ‘Georgeosaurus’. This was Tavia’s great idea !

To celebrate this special day we watched a cartoon about dinosaurs and learnt lots of amazing facts.  We spent the afternoon doing all things dinosaur.  What did we do ?

We played with the dinosur small world.

We used playdough to add features to our dinosaur play mats.

We used our fine motor skills to follow the lines and do super colouring in of dinosaurs.

We told Mrs Macdonald a dinosaur fact that we learnt today.  She wrote down what we said.

To finish off our dinosaur afternoon, Leon was given our friendly class dinosaur, ‘Borisaurus’ for a sleepover.  We hope that he behaves for you Leon !

Fantastic Kyle !

DSCF5355 DSCF5356

Here is Kyle proudly showing off his certificate and number from ‘Pedal Scotland’.  Kyle , along with his mummy, daddy and big sister cycled all the way from Kirkliston to Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh yesterday !   What a super achievement !

Kyle did this for charity.  We are all very impressed and proud of you for doing this.  You have inspired Mrs Macdonald and your friends in P1a to also do something nice for charity.  Watch this space.

Mrs Macdonald.

Primary 1 had a special delivery

Today, both primary 1a and 1b came back in our classroom after lunch to find we’d been left a very big box and a letter.

A paleontologist (a dinosaur scientist) has sent us both a real life dinosaur egg! They are HUGE!! He wants us to look after them as he’s very busy at the museum at the moment.

We learned that eggs need to be kept warm, so we’re keeping them in a nest of straw. We don’t know if it is going to hatch or not, but we are going to learn all about dinosaurs, just in case it does, so we know what to feed it and how to look after it. We’ll keep you updated.

Primary 1 Commonwealth Games Assembly

Article 31
There are lots of sports played during the Commonwealth Games.

Primary 1a and 1b put together an amazing assembly on Friday! They worked so hard to learn the songs and all their words and Mrs MacDonald and Mrs Renshaw were very proud! It’s hard to believe they started school less than a year ago! Here they are having a go at some of the sports which will be at the Commonwealth Games…
See video in link below (hopefully this works!):

Primary 1 Measure!

Article 29

Our education should help us use and develop our talents and abilities.

We have been learning about ‘tall’ and ‘short’ in measure. Everyone in the class arranged themselves in height order. We found objects in the classroom which were taller or shorter than 10 cubes and sorted them. We made tall and short trees and flowers from playdough for Fairyland. We even got to measure Jack and the Giant with pencils to see who was taller!

Music time

Primary 1a and Primary 1b were very excited to receive a visit today from the musician Dave Trouten. We had a great time finding things that rhyme in his shopping bag and singing a song about our favourite sandwich fillings. We used our listening skills to sort out his shakers and then used the shakers with other instruments to create a piece of music about our imaginary train journey to the seaside. Afterwards we were all ready to come home for a rest!

Dragon visit!

Primary 1a and Primary 1b were very excited this morning to discover a glitter trail in their classrooms after playtime! The trails led to letters from the Friendly Dragon asking for our help. We decided we would help all the fairytale creatures by building Fairyland in our classrooms. We checked with Mrs. Brown that we would be allowed to re-build Fairyland and she said it was OK. We wrote a letter to the dragon to tell him all the things we would do.
