Primary 2 learned that if we can draw a triangle, square, circle, straight line and squiggly line we can draw anything! We looked around the classroom and explored the shapes that made up different objects. We were very excited about what we found!

Amazing Addition in P2
Primary 2 have been working on adding between 10 and 20 this week. We even started to see the connection between addition and subtraction. We have been trying to choose challenges to improve our growth mindset too!

This week we have been learning all about Rabbits. We were so busy this week that we learned these fun facts today (Friday) instead of Thursday!
We really enjoyed hearing stories and learning about different types of rabbits. Here are some of the things we learned:

Busy bees in Primary 3
Primary 3 have been working really hard during our Guided Reading activities. We have enjoyed exploring our reading books in depth and finding out more about the plot, character and setting. We have also enjoyed using the netbooks to practise our spelling words. Have a look at us in action!
Viking Day Out
Primary four enjoyed their trip to the National Museum of Scotland yesterday. They learned lots of interesting things about the Vikings and had the opportunity to handle Viking Artefacts. They also got the chance to explore some of the other areas of the Museum for a short time.
Life For A Child At A Victorian Cotton Mill
Primary 6 had a wonderful day at New Lanark where we learned what life could be like for children in the past. We found out about the pioneering reforms that took place at New Lanark which made life better for poorer people, including education for children, the first Co-Op for food and other provisions and protection for younger children from the more dangerous and difficult work. We took a ride on the Annie Macleod experience, participated in a Victorian school lesson and toured the New Lanark mills and houses. What a great day!
P7 Career Conference
Primary 7 had a great morning at the West Lothian Career Conference in Livingston Football Stadium. The focus was Hospitality, Food and Drink, Hygiene and Engineering processes within food and drink. We all enjoyed sampling the smoothies, cakes, scones, pasta, unusual fruits and vegetables. We learned how to set a table and a little bit about silver service. We watched a cookery demonstration and some of us tasted mussels for the first time.
Pet Dinosaurs in P1 !
We have had the best day ever in Primary 1 ! Why ? Well, this afternoon after we learnt all about St Nicholas we went into our classrooms and saw that our eggs had hatched ! As you can imagine, this caused great excitement as it would seem that the mummy dinosaur also visited our classrooms. We know this because she left her footprints in each of the rooms. We were so excited that Mrs Brown came along to see what was going on. She was mighty impressed to see three baby T-Rexes in her school.
James F and James H from Mrs Evan’s class actually spotted the mummy dinosaur in the bushes, wow ! We will keep you all updated with our pet dinosaur’s adventures !
St Nicholas in Primary 1
Today in Primary 1, we have been learning all about our school’s saint: St Nicholas.

Money, money, money in P6
We started our money topic today in maths and commenced by calculating the best offers to buy goods. First, we had to calculate how much certain products would cost on an internet site (including delivery) and then we compared the cost of the same goods on another site. As a spicy challenge we worked out how we could “shop around” by buying our goods over a few sites to ensure we got the best deal….Moneysaving Expert – you have competition!
We continued to look at ways in which we could partition numbers into “partial quotients” to make them simpler to divide in our Number Talks and learned more about Queen Victoria (Empress of India – although she NEVER visited!) in our topic work.
We continued to work on our lines and songs for our assembly and prepared ourselves for our school trip tomorrow – we are very excited! Please remember to bring a packed lunch if you have not ordered a school one – thank you!

P1’S Macmillan Coffee Morning.
It is with great pleasure that we can now announce the grand total for our ‘Macmillan Coffee Morning. We raised a whopping £500 !! Thank you so much for digging deep and helping us raise such a super amount for a great charity. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we are thinking of planning another one. Watch this space !

School Football Tournament Stars!

Deacon Brodie and Greyfriars Bobby

Primary 6b Update
This Thursday and Friday we have been very busy. We have done our Number Talks (breaking numbers into smaller factors), did a Maths carousel, practised our spelling words with different activities and we played the “Spanish Challenge” to practise the colours, animals, emotions, greetings, etc.
We have finished our Creation art which is now displayed on the gym hall door. Please check it out, it looks awesome!
In topic we have learned about school and childhood in the Victorian times and we made our own Victorian toy. We have also started practising our Assembly which will be next Friday.
Pizza Day!1
Primary 4 have had a busy week, we had our class mass, we learned to play Benchball in PE, we enjoyed learning a new French song for European Day of Languages and we made beautiful Autumn tree pictures with Mrs Renshaw. The best part was having pizza during Golden Time for a reward for earning 600 dojo points as a class!

Paired Reading with Primary 2 and 6
Primary 2 were so excited to be introduced to their p6 paired reading buddy. We really enjoyed getting to know and reading with our buddies. The primary 6’s will be working hard on activities to help and support us in our reading. We are really looking forward to it!

P7 Highlights
Here are the highlights that Primary 7 have chosen to blog about.
We all had lots of fun teaching our buddies Spanish.

As part of our World War 2 topic we have been researching the following: Rationing, Women in the War, Scotland’s Blitz, Home guard, Anne Frank and Evacuation.
In Number talks we have been concentrating on the following strategies: partitioning, adjusting, landmark numbers, making tens, near doubles and compensation.
In RME we have been learning about the four evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. We have been comparing their accounts of events in the Bible.
We have been learning how to write a parody.
In Maths we have been working with factors. A factor is a number that can be divided into another number with no remainders. Next week we are going to look at Prime Numbers. We also learned the rules of divisibility. Some of us tested our parents on this! We are enjoying chanting in the counting choir.
In Music we have been learning the recorder with Mrs Steele. Some of us took part in Mr Bruce’s Chanter workshop. We are proud of Finlay who has just started playing in the West Lothian School’s Pipe band.
We are continuing to look at the artworks of Kandinsky and we have enjoyed recreating our own pieces of art in the same style.
P7B are really enjoying their class novel Nemesis by Catherine Macphail. There is lots of mystery and lots of twists in the story so far. It is keeping us on the edge of our seats!!!!

Maths
Last week we learned about BODMAS (Brackets Order Division Multiplication Addition Subtraction). It was important to do our problems in this order because otherwise we could all have different answers! In Number Talks this week our strategy was ‘Adding up in chunks’. When we break down our calculations, it makes it easier to solve difficult problems.
This week we also did rounding to the nearest ten, hundred and thousand. We also challenged ourselves by rounding to the nearest ten thousand and hundred thousand. Furthermore, we took a look at decimals. This was tricky and it is something we will work on again in our next maths focus, which is money.
Language and literacy
In language and literacy we revised similes and metaphors. We also learnt about personification which is when you describe an object or thing with human characteristics. For example:
The wind whistled through the valley.
The trees whispered secrets.
Last week, we learned all about synonym and antonyms.
PSD
In PSD, we have been learning about gender inequality and we have made posters of what people think girls should like and another one that they think boys should like. We also wrote a traditional fairytale but we changed the gender! We are learning to respect each other and not to show discrimination.
Assembly
We have recently been learning about the Victorians so we are doing an assembly to show you what we have been learning and we found out that we are doing a local show and it’s Oliver Twist!
P2b Performances
Primary 2b have been enjoying creating and watching one another perform a song or dance! We are so impressed with the confidence and excellent creativity!
Super Spanish Fun in Primary 2!!
During European Languages Day Primary 2 had the pleasure of working with Primary 6 children learning all about colours in Spanish. We were so impressed with the creative and exciting lesson Primary 6 had prepared for us! We had great fun and can’t wait to buddy up with you again!

Thursday’s Facts in Primary 1.
Today we learnt all about ducks. Mrs Macdonald spotted a duck in the burn next to our school on her way to school this morning. Keep your eyes peeled for it next time you pass the burn. Please remember though boys and girls to never go near water on your own.

We have been learning about the Roman army and were excited to try on a typical helmet that a Roman soldier would wear. We were surprised at how heavy it was. We know that the hairy part is called the plume and it was there to make the soldiers look more manly.
Primary 6 this week….
In Primary 6 this week Monday started with Media Monday, followed by a Number Talk using doubles and near doubles (250 + 250 followed by 248 + 249) . We saw how much quicker is was to add up to a near double first, then remove the extra RATHER than spending time on a chimney-style sum. Next, we started a new topic in maths – rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000 and applying this knowledge to word-problems that required several steps of calculation; although the task required concentration we all felt pretty confident that we could move on to the next stage which was to round bigger numbers and decimals.
We continued with our Literacy work, mostly looking at how more complex paragraphs are made by creating COHESION in our writing. We discussed the meaning of cohesion and looked at the cohesive devices used by authors to make a paragraph work well (namely, pronouns, conjunctions and determiners). Synonyms are also used to assist with cohesion in writing and therefore we subsequently completed an exercise to replace common words with interesting synonyms in a passage.
We found out some things about the Victorian Artist and designer William Morris in our topic work.
This week Primary 6 have also started their Primary 2 reading project; we met our Primary 2 buddies and found out about some of the books they like to read. Next week we’ll create some activities designed to challenge and interest our junior readers! We strengthened the connection we have with our Primary 2 friends today with our joint language learning when Primary 2 sang us a song in many languages and in return, we taught them the names for the colours in Spanish by playing games we had created with them…a great collaboration!
In 6B our Number Talk today was about how to simplify division. We found a range of strategies to answer the question 56 divided by 4. The most efficient was to split the 56 into 40 and 16 and divide each of the parts by 4 separately. Hard at work P6!
Hair-raisingly good!
Primary 3 have been learning about the visual element of line. We have explored using lots of different types of line – wavy, straight, zigzag, swirly. We know that lines create shape. We then used these different lines to create crazy hair! Have a look at some of our masterpieces.
Cross Country Capers With Primary 6
Both Primary 6 classes put in a HUGE effort today at their Cross Country Running Competition, run by the Active Schools Co-ordinators at Kirkhill Primary. Despite the wet weather, there were no complaints from our competitors as they battled mud, hills, rain and slippery slopes to come in third in the competition! Well done Primary 6 we are really proud of you! We have some photos of the event, but a technical difficulty means that we will need to upload them later.
Celebrating the European Day of Languages
In St Nicholas we like to celebrate diversity and value all cultures and languages. This week we have been busy learning special songs and games in Spanish, Polish and French to celebrate the European Day of Languages.
Today we shared our learning with other classes. We enjoyed this special challenge!
Primary 7 made games to teach their Primary 1 buddies the numbers in Spanish.
Primary 1 taught Primary 7 how to play “Un dos tres, Calabaza!”
Primary 6 prepared games to teach their buddies in Primary 2 the colours in Spanish.
Primary 2 learned to say Hello in different languages and sang a song to Primary 6.
Primary 3 showed Primary 4 how to say the numbers (up to 5) in Polish. The Polish children in P3 were very helpful! Thanks

Super Spanish in Primary 1.
Today we had great fun learning alongside our primary 7 buddies when we played a game in Spanish called ‘ Un, dos tres Calabaza’, (One, two, three pumpkin) in celebration of ‘International Day of Languages’. We had lots of fun playing this game as it helped us to learn how to count in Spanish. We also played number games that our p7 buddies made especially for us. We love learning Spanish in Primary 1. We can say hello, goodbye, good morning, how are you and are learning the names of colours and numbers.

Stegosaurus
Today we have been learning all about the Stegosaurus.
What have we learnt ?
Megan – A stegosaurus was the size of a bus.
Lucas – They had plates on their back.
Thomas – They ate grass.
Max C – Stegosauruses were herbivores.
Sophia & Chloe – This dinosaur had spikey horns on their tail to help them get away from other dinosaurs.
Isabella A – They moved slowly.
Ava – They moved slowly because they had short legs.
Toby – They had 17 plates on their back.
Well done to all of the boys and girls for listening so well. Tomorrow we will learn all about another dinosaur. Which one will it be ?

The Blitz
Primary 7 have been learning about The Blitz as part of their topic on World War 2. 
The Blitz
On the 7th of September 1940 German Air Forces raided London. London was bombed every day and night for 11 weeks. Over 350 bombs flew across the channel from France. Nearly 2,000 were killed or wounded on the first night. 32,000 people were killed and 87,000 were seriously injured by the end of the Blitz. Most of the attacks happened at night when people were fast asleep. People were warned by booming sirens. When people heard the sirens they made a break for shelter. Other cities and towns were also badly affected including Coventry, Liverpool, Southampton and Glasgow. In November 1940 one of the most devastating and biggest air raids happened in Coventry over 4,000 homes were destroyed and 500 people were killed. People made shelters in their gardens to protect themselves and their families.

Super surprise in Primary 1 !
Wow ! We have some really exciting news to share with you all. Today, we receiveda letter and a package from Professor D. Inosaur asking us for some help. He asked all of the lovely boys and girls in Primary 1 to help him to look after a dinosaur egg.
Well, we could not believe it and of course we have said ‘yes’. The next few weeks in Primary 1 are going to be so much fun as we wait for the egg to hatch and learn lots of exciting things about dinosaurs. Stay tuned for dinosaur updates !
P1’s Fantastic Facts
Today, P1 all got together to learn some fantastic facts. Today we were learning about Spiders!
We began by reading two different stories. One was a fiction book. This means it is not real (Andrew).
The other was a non-fiction book. This means it is real (Joshua).
We learned lots of facts about spiders:

Matthew P – they have spinnerettes

Primary 5 have been learning about Old Edinburgh for the past fortnight. We have been learning lots of interesting facts about Edinburgh Castle, the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Mary,Queen of Scots.

Fantastic Mr Fox!
We’re all just back from a fantastic afternoon, watching a travelling theatre company perform ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’. In celebration of one of our children’s favourite authors, Roald Dahl, all our boys and girls from Nursery to P7, watched the production. At St Nicholas Primary, we love Roald Dahl because there are always morals in his stories and great characterisation, making them suitable for young and old.

More people who help us!
Our primary one children had a fantastic day today visiting our local fire station!
The children listened well as the fireman told them what his job was. They learned all about the uniforms (did you know that most fire fighters wear yellow helmets, but the one who’s in charge wears a white helmet?!) and all about the fire engines (in Scotland they are red with blue lights – the same as the ambulance!!)
We learned that at Broxburn, all the firefighters have pagers, which beep when it’s time to go to work, but other stations have fire fighters who eat and even sleep there!
They then saw what fire fighters have to wear (Mrs Evans and Mrs Baty modeled the uniform – it was very heavy and warm!!)
We also learned what to do if we ever see someone on fire (tell them to Stop, Drop and Roll – you can see us practicing this in our photos).
After that, the children went outside to explore the fire engine. They even got a shot of a water hose out of the fire engine!
All primary 1 children were fantastic on our first trip! Thank you again to our fabulous parent helpers!

Amazing Ambulance in Primary 1!!
Today, primary 1 were lucky enough to have some very special visitors! As part of our People Who Help Us topic, we invited some paramedics to come to see the children. They told us all about their job, what they do and what equipment they use.
Some of us were allowed to dress up in their real High Vis Jacket, and their paramedics helmet. Then, we pretended Mrs Evans had been trampled by an elephant!! The paramedics put a bandage on her head (like a big plaster) and used a special machine to make sure she was feeling okay (it beeped, and had a blue wavy line on it).
Then, we went to see the ambulance!!! It was amazing! We even got to go inside! Then they put the siren on for us to hear! (See our picture with our hands over our ears … it was so loud!).
We had a really great day!!

Very Special Visitors!
We have had a fantastic day in Primary 1C today!!
We have been learning all about people who help us.
Yesterday we learned all about the police. We played with dressing up, coloured in pictures and even took our own fingerprints. It was very exciting.
Today we were learning all about the ambulance service. We had two very special visitors called Andrea and Scott.

People Who Help Us (P1b)
Primary 1b are really enjoying learning lots about ‘People Who Help Us’. So far, we have been learnt all about the police and paramedics. Today we got to see inside a real ambulance. It was very cool! Thank you to the two lovely paramedics, Andrea and Scott for bringing an ambulance along to our school.

Primary 1a working hard!
Primary 1a have been working so hard this week! We have been learning to read and write some sounds. So far we have learned ‘m’ and ‘a’.
We have also been continuing to learn about patterns. We have made some lovely pattern caterpillars, which Mrs Baty is looking forward to putting up on our wall!

Today, Primary 1 were learning all about The Police, as part of our People Who Help Us topic.
We began by watching a video about police in action, then we had lots of fun activities. We got to play dress up (as police and firefighters), and we even took our own finger prints!

Working Hard in Primary 1a!!
We have been having so much fun and we’ve been working very hard in Primary 1a! Mrs Baty is very proud of us!!

We have been learning all about pattern. We know that pattern means ‘it is repeated’. We have been making patterns with colour using counters / cubes, and we have begun making patterns with shapes. We also made a pattern using ourselves!!! (sitting and standing).

Today we read the story of Elmer the Elephant. Elmer was sad because he was different from all the other elephants. He painted himself grey, but quickly realised that by embracing his unique personality and his colours, he was happier and he made everyone else happier. We then spoke about what makes us all special and unique.

Last week we made our beautiful Rainbow Fish, whilst learning about how to be kind to each other by sharing. Our Rainbow Fish look ‘amazing’, ‘fantastic’ and ‘beautiful’ on our wall.

Fun with books in P1b !
We are really enjoying listening to stories each day. We have a few favourites already, ‘Elmer’s Parade’ and ‘Aliens love Underpants’. We have been busy participating in different activities linked to these books. Here are some pictures of our super work.
Another super day in P1c
This morning the boys and girls were practising colouring and cutting. They designed their own butterfly using the different colours of the rainbow (just like the butterfly in The Hungry Caterpillar).
After break we read The Rainbow Fish story. We spoke about what this story was teaching us and how we can be like the rainbow fish in our classroom. We have all agreed to be kind, helpful and good at sharing just like the Rainbow Fish.
Little Explorers in P1c!
We have spent the morning getting to know each other and exploring our new environment. We found lots of exciting things to play with!
After seeing our buddies at break we read The Hungry Caterpillar. This got us chatting about the different foods that we like to eat. We also discussed things that we like to do in our spare time. After that, we drew self portraits which are displayed on our classroom wall.

Our First Day of School!! (P1c)

Lovely day in Primary 1a!
Primary 1a have had another exciting day at school today.
This morning we had fun doing lots of different activities to build our fine motor skills. We drew spikes on crocodiles, we playing with jumping frogs, we made necklaces, we played with laces, and we played / danced with some playdoh to the Doh Disco (so much fun!).
After playtime (where we got to see our buddies again), we listened to the story The Rainbow Fish. We had a chat about the importance of sharing, and discussed the ways each of us have shared things with others. We then had to share the glue, scissors, and coloured paper, to make our very own Rainbow Fish. They look beautiful!
Welcome to Primary 1a
We had a fantastic morning in Primary 1a, we had so much fun and made lots new friends.
We showed Mrs Baty how clever we were by doing fantastic listening, sitting and by putting up our hands to talk.
We played some circle time games to get to know our classmates, and found out all of our favourite animals. We all seem to like cats, dogs, lions and penguins amongst others.
We had a story after break time and met our story animals. They help us to listen nicely to the stories, and sometimes ask questions too.
We even got to use some paint to make a friendship tree for our classroom (photo to follow).

Primary 3A and B had a busy weekend receiving medals.

Buddy Visit- Afternoon Session
Primary 6b buddies came into nursery to spend time with their new buddies. The nursery boys and girls were very excited at seeing them again and even remembered their buddies names! The children all had great fun together getting to know their new friends.

Primary 6a came into nursery today to visit their buddies. The boys and girls were very excited and loved spending time with them. The primary 6 children kindly made games to play and interact with their buddies. Great fun was had by all!

Sporting Stars in P1a.
Here we have Santiago and Grady ! Santiago is holding his orange belt that he was awarded in Tae Kwon Do. Well done ! Grady is proudly showing off his medal for being a fantastic boy at rugby. Well done ! I am very proud of both of you both.
Day 8 of Primary 1’s Fitness Fortnight.
Today we had a visit from three lovely ladies from ‘West Lothian Gymnastics’. What did we do ? Well we all went to the gym hall and had a gymnastics taster session . It was amazing ! First of all we played a warm up game called ‘Breakfast’ before we stretched out. We were then placed into three groups and let loose on the equipment doing forward rolls, backward rolls, handstands, kangaroo jumps and more jumping using the springboard. We had such a good time that some of us wanted to have another go. Well done everyone for working hard !
Fitness Fortnight continued – Karate
Primary 1a and 1b had a fantastic afternoon of Karate. Some of us have already experienced Taikwondo or Karate before, and we were keen to show off our skills.
We found out that Karate is a Japanese sport.
We began by learning how to say hello in Japanese. They are very formal. To say hello, they bow, with their hands at their sides and their feet together. The more important the person, the lower we bow. So of course, we all bowed very low to our teachers!
We then learned how to count to 5 in Japanese.
1 – ish
2 – ni
3 – san
4 – chi
5 – go
We then learned different ways to punch and kick correctly, so as not to hurt ourselves. (Of course, we learned that this is just a sport, and only to be done in safe environments, such as in karate or taikwondo classes).
We learned a forward punch – it is important to keep our thumb tucked away, punch in a straight line, and use the top part of our first 2 fingers.
We learned to a head block and a side block (to stop others punching us).
We then learned something called a slap kick – we don’t use the bottom of our foot or our toes, as this would hurt. Instead, we use the top part of our foot.
We practiced all of these on punching pads, held only by the instructors. We then got a go at using the pretend man called Bob. This was fun as he was very squishy and wobbled a lot.
We also had lots of fun playing games. These games were to help us get fit, and to exercise our muscles. We played an opposites game. We found this tricky at first but eventually got the hang of it. If the man said sit, we had to stand. If he said fight, we had to dance.
We then played a dice game. The dice had different exercises on it, including crunches, push ups, star jumps and squats. There was even a side which got the teachers to do 25 exercises! Luckily it only landed on this once. It was very funny watching Mrs Baty trying to do 25 push ups! She’s not as fit as us.
We had a really fun day, and we’re looking forward to the rest of the week.
Primary 1’s Fitness Fortnight Day 6.
We have had a fantastic day today !
What have we been up to ?
This morning we took a walk up to the ‘Range Park’. Some of us had already been before so we were already familiar with it. For some of though, it was our first time there and we were amazed when we saw all of the super things there. What did we see ?

a roundabout
a chute
an obstacle course
a trampoline
a roundabout
and lots of lovely green grass and sand for us to run around on.
We all had lots of super fun running around and using the equipment. It was really great ! We arrived back to school just before lunchtime having walked back. Mrs Macdonald and Mrs Baty agreed that because we walked up and down to the park we didn’t have to do our ‘Daily Mile’ back at school. Phew !!!!
In the afternoon we had a visit from a nurse ! She told us lots of super things about our body and what we can do to keep ourselves strong and healthy. She also showed us what a heart looks like and told us how important it is to exercise. We learnt that children’s hearts should beat between 80-120 beats per minute. We also learnt how important it is to wash our hands. It was a very informative visit. Thanks so much toMrs Purves for giving up her time to talk to us.
A big thank you also to Freya and Tavia’s mummy, Wiktoria’s mummy and Thomas’s mummy for coming along to the park this morning to help us.

Primary 1a’s ‘Star Pupil of the Week’and ‘DOJO Champion’.
It was very, very, very difficult to choose a star this week in P1a because all of the boys and girls are stars. We have had such a busy week and every single one of the children has worked well and joined in every activity with great enthusiasm.
However, I have decided to give the ‘Star of the Week’ to Cole. He has impressed me with this week with his kindess towards others and how enthusiastic he has been with all our ‘Fitness Fortnight’ activities, (especially the daily mile). Well done Cole !
Our DOJO Champion this week goes to Kuba ! Well done Kuba for getting points for tidying up, changing quickly and remembering his magic manners.

Bouncy Obstacle Course
Primary 1 continued their Fitness Fortnight today by playing on a bouncy obstacle course. It was great fun, and very tiring! This means we were doing great exercise. We all felt very hot, sweaty and our hearts were beating fast. Primary 2 and 3 even got to have a go as well. Look at our photos. We all have huge smiles!

P1s Fab Fitness Fortnight Continued
P1 are having a brilliant week as part of our Fitness Fortnight. We are definitely feeling very fit …. and very tired!
Today we did our daily mile again. It is 6 times around the field. We have been walking most of the way, then running the last 2 laps, although some of us are pushing ourselves further to run more. We are noticing the differences now that we’ve been doing it more continuously.
This afternoon P1a had a yoga instructor come into the class. We had lots of fun trying to get ourselves into all the different positions. They had funny names, including The Airplane, The Bridge and The Cat. We had a lot of fun! (Primary 1b will get to try this next week).
This afternoon, P1b made some healthy snacks. We actually began by trying Mrs Baty’s smoothie (she wasn’t so keen on the ones we tried yesterday, so brought in one of her homemade ones). Lots of us liked it a lot more than the others, and we found out how easy it was to make.
We then made our own yoghurt snacks. We mixed yoghurt, coco powder, honey and banana, and put it in the freezer. We were hoping to eat them this afternoon, but they weren’t frozen enough. It’ll just have to be our breakfast tomorrow! (P1a will make these next week).
Eco News !! Oyster Catchers at St. Nicholas.
This year at St Nicholas we have had Oyster catchers nesting on the roof. Unfortunately the baby chick fell out of the nest early and has been living in the playground ever since.
The children have been really good at watching it from a distance, so that the mum and dad can still look after it.When it fell out of the nest it was so fluffy but the baby is nearly as big as the mum now.
The Eco Club phoned the RSPB and asked for advice. The kind people from the RSPB said that the chick is being looked after very well and should be able to fly away in the next few days.
The mum and dad will look after it for 6 months before it is able to live alone. They will teach it everything it needs to know. The children have learned a lot about how to be kind to wildlife because of this and have found it very exciting. Well done everyone !
Day 3 – Primary 1’s Fitness Fortnight!
We have had another great day today ! We started our day off learning about lots of different fruits. We spoke about our favourite fruits before trying some of these in the form of smoothies.
We tried a mango and passion fruit smoothie, a pineapple, banana and coconut smoothie, a strawberry and banana smoothie and a pomegranate, blueberry and acai berry smoothie. We liked some of these better than others but we still tried them and some of us even asked for more. A big well done to everyone for trying these , we are super proud of you all.
Primary 1b voted, and we decided our favourite was the strawberry and banana smoothie, although the mango and passion fruit was a very close second.
In the afternoon we went for our mile walk. This is starting to become easier for us and we are enjoying being out in the fresh air.

We are looking forward to inviting our mummies, daddies, brothers, sisters, grannies and grandads to our assembly on Friday, 17th of June at 11.00am in our hall. Please come along if you can to share our learning with us.
Day 2 – Primary 1’s Fitness Fortnight !
Today has been another busy day gfor the boys and girls in P1a and P1b.
What did we do ?
We walked another mile today with the help of our lovely friends from P7. This is what we think about the daily mile :
Lara – I love it !
Mia – It is nice !
Gabriel – I am excited going for a walk.
Haroon – I like it because it gives me strength, (good words Haroon !)
After the daily mile we played games outside ‘Duck Duck Goose’ and ‘Donkey’.
After lunchtime we walked over to Strathbrock and did some Zumba. This was great fun! A huge thanks to Nina, the dance teacher for showing us some cool moves and helping us with our fitness.
Medal Champions
Well done to Monde-Jnr for receiving this trophy for coming first in a go-karting competition on Sunday in South Wales.
Well done to Harris and Maisie for receiving medals for taking part in a triathlon on Sunday. Harris came in 13th place and Maisie came in 2nd place. Congratulations to you all! We are very proud of you!
P1b’s Fabulous Fairytales
Primary 1b had a great couple of weeks towards the end of our Fairytale Topic.
Thank you to all the mums and dads and grannys etc to who came to our Fairytale Showcase. We had such a great time telling you all about our learning. We have really enjoyed this topic.
After the showcase, we still had lots more to learn. We looked at the fairytale of Hansel and Gretal. We decided the witch was very nasty, and that we should be cooking her instead of her cooking Hansel. We wrote some amazing recipes for her.
We then made our own sweetie house. They looked yummy!
P1b’s Spectacular Castles
Primary 1b have worked so hard to build their castles! They all look amazing! Mrs Baty is so proud of us all!!
P1’s Fantastic Fitness Fortnight (Day 1)
Primary 1 have had a brilliant start to their Fitness Fortnight!
This morning we went on a trip to Craigswood Xcite Leisure Centre.
It was amazing! We had 7 different activities set up for us, and the trainers were very helpful.
We experienced shot-put, using basketballs before using REAL shotput balls!!
We tried the javelin. This was very tricky.
We tried the high jump and the long jump (I think we brought back most of the sand!)
We had a go at wellie throwing.
We had a hoop game, and we had races. We were all super fast, but eventually we got our boy and girl winners. We even got prizes!!
We had a really fab time!
Then, this afternoon, we took part in our daily mile. We are enjoying it a lot more and are finding it easier now. We are even trying to run more and more of it.
Then we had some team building games.
We had a hoop game – we had to get the hoop around the circle, without letting go of each others hands. This was quite tricky, but Mrs Baty & Mrs Gaffney’s team seemed to get the hang of it very quickly.
We then had some wheelbarrow races. Most of us went in the right direction! This was great fun though.
Finally, we played a game with a ball. We stood in a row in our team, and had to pass the ball along the line in a pattern. We were quite good at this, but rather tired by this point.
Overall, we had a fantastic day! (and what great weather it was too!)
Hopefully we’ll all sleep very well tonight, and be ready for more adventures tomorrow.

A very big well done to Lara for being our ‘Star Pupil’ this week. Lara has been kind, helpful and hardworking. Congratulations to Luca for bring this week’s ‘DOJO Champion’. Luca pipped everyone by just one point. Well done !

Thank you to our lovely mummies, daddies, grannies, grandas and friends for coming along to our ‘Fairytale Showcase’ yesterday afternoon. As always, it was lovely to see you. We had fun and hope that you did too.
Fairytale Fun in P1 !
Here are some of us dressed up as dragons, pirates, knights and princesses. We even have a couple of Jacks from ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’, and two Big Bad Wolves . EEK !!!!! Can you spot the Ice Queen and the Gingerbread Man ? Little Red Riding Hood and one of the three bears have dropped by too ! We are looking forward to our fairytale showcase this afternoon.

Musical Masterpieces!
Primary 3 have been learning about Sound. As part of this mini topic, they were set the challenge of making a musical instrument using things from home.
They all put in lots of effort and managed to make some fantastic instruments!

Anime fun
Over the past few weeks primary 7A have been learning about anime and making their own characters. Our characters are really creative and inventive. After that, we made our own manga comics in groups.
Katriona – I thought that was a lot of fun because we made our own characters.
Rosie- In my opinion anime is really creative and fun and it was the best art lesson we have had so far.
Carrick-I thought it was fun learning to draw the proper anime features.
Primary 1a’s wishes !
After reading Cinderella, we decided that it would be fun to write about things we wish for. Here are some of our wishes. I wonder if any of them will come true ?

More surprises in P1 !
We came in from lunch today to find yet another surprise left for us in our classrooms. Two lovely cuddly kangaroos and their babies were waiting for us! Who left these for us you may ask ?
It was Harry, our lovely Saint Nicholas friend who has returned from a well earned holiday in Australia!
Thank you to Harry for your kindness ! We were so happy with our gift that we decided to learn lots about kangaroos. We learnt that :
- Kangaroos are found in Australia.
- Kangaroos can hop around quickly on two legs or walk around slowly on all four.
- Kangaroos can’t walk backwards.
- Kangaroos have very powerful legs and can be dangerous at times.
- Kangaroos can jump very high, sometimes three times their own height.
- Kangaroos can swim.
- Most kangaroos eat grass.
- Baby kangaroos are known as ‘joeys’.
Primary 1b’s Magical Morning
Primary 1b had a very fun morning, imagining we had a Fairy Godmother, just like Cinderella!
We had some lovely wishes to ask her. We will soon be making magic wands to see if we can help make some of them come true. Photos will come later.
