We had a great week last week learning about the water cycle and creating our very own weather forecasts. We hope you enjoyed watching their weather report on Seesaw. The children were all very nervous but they all did a fantastic job at creating their forecast and presenting it, using some key weather words. Well done Primary 3!
This week in maths, we are learning about place value and the importance of zero when breaking numbers down into Hundreds, Tens and Ones. We are also learning about the properties of pentagons, hexagons and octagons!
New reading books have been issued today and our focus in reading is summarising. We are learning how to summarise a story using pictures and sentences. We are working hard to share the main points of a story using key questions such as; who, what, why, where and when.
Mrs Smith will be writing with us again. We will write the second half of our recount about a typical school day. Children are working hard to use their core and genre targets to help give their writing a focus.
In topic we are going to be investigating about how seasons are influenced by the orbit of the Earth around the sun. We will also identify which months fall into each season and how night and day changes through the seasons.
A new homework grid has been uploaded to Seesaw! Thank you to all the children who managed to complete the activities on last week’s grid. We loved all your posts and videos. Also if you have a managed to successfully grow your sunflower over the summer please send your pictures on Seesaw- we can use these to help boost our Eco School!

We have had a busy but fun week in Primary 6 so far. Work has begun in each of the curricular areas and the children are working extremely hard so far 🙂 Homework has been posted on Teams. The children have 2 weeks to complete the tasks and only the tasks with a star are mandatory, the rest are optional. More information can be found on our class Teams page. Some children have also received a paper copy of the homework. Please encourage your child to ask their class teacher for a paper copy if they require it.
As our annual Meet the Teacher event is unable to take place this year Mr Drysdale and I have created a short presentation each so that you can “meet” us and hear more about our plans in Primary 6 this year. You will find these videos on the P6A and P6B Teams pages. Please have a look 🙂
In Numeracy we have been continuing with work on place value looking at building and partitioning numbers up to 7 digits. The children have also been exploring the place values of decimal numbers using tenths and hundredths.
This term our focus in writing is recount. This week the children are recounting the events of their weekend. Yesterday the children planned out their writing and today they will using their plan to produce their first full piece of writing in Primary 6. The children will also self assess their work using “Green for Go” and “Pink for Think”. We can’t wait to see their fabulous work!
– Indoor shoes should be worn in class and around the school. Please ensure your child has a pair of indoor shoes in school that they can change into.
– PE days are Tuesday (outdoor) and Wednesday (indoor). This week we are having a one off PE session on Friday 3rd September too. Children can therefore wear their PE uniform to school this Friday too.
– Homework is due in next Friday 10th September

Although this week has been shorter we are still having a busy week in Primary 4. Our mini beasts topic is well underway and the children have been showing lots of enthusiasm about what they are learning during class discussions. This week we learned about “vertebrates” and “invertebrates”. Many children had fantastic prior knowledge about this topic that they brought to our class discussion. We also had great fun playing a dominoes game which meant we had to match up vertebrates and invertebrates. Poppy from Miss Clark’s class mentioned something about “exo-skeletons” this week. I wonder where this line of thought will take us?
Also in topic lessons we have been exploring the world of non-fiction books. We have been learning about how non-fiction books are structured and on Tuesday we used the index to help us to research different mini beasts in non-fiction books, some of which we had never even heard of before! Most children have now been given a non-fiction book home to read. Please ask them if they can identify the contents page, index and glossary and explain their purpose. We are soon going to be using non-fiction books in class to help us to research.
This week we have set homework on Teams. There is a video on the “Primary 4 Year Group” Teams page explaining how this homework should be completed. The due date is next Friday 14th May and only starred activities need to be completed, the rest are optional. Please let Mr Woodward or Miss Clark know if you have any further questions regarding home work.
In Numeracy we have begun work on Place Value. This week we explored 4 digit numbers and what each of the digits represented (Thousands, Hundreds, Tens and Ones/Units). We also worked on ordering 4 digit numbers. Focusing on looking at the furthest left digit and moving inwards towards the hundreds and tens digits if the numbers were similar (e.g. 1456 and 1465). Next week we are going to be working on identifying the numbers “before”, “after”, “more than” and “less than” 4 digit numbers. Please ask your child what they have learned about 4 digit numbers.
In reading we are continuing with our novel study “Charlotte’s Web”. The children are enjoying the story so far and we have already met the main characters Wilbur and Fern. We are looking forward to meeting Charlotte herself next week! There is lots of excellent description in “Charlotte’s Web”. So much so that we were able to draw accurate pictures of Zuckerman’s Barn just by reading the description of it! This week we wrote our own descriptive paragraphs entitled “My Favourite Place”. The children wrote fantastic paragraphs that focused on what they could see, smell, hear and even touch and taste in their favourite places! They were so fantastic that Mr Shanks even wanted to see some! Keep up the good work Primary 4!
