Primary 4 16.1.19

Hello everyone

We have had a lovely week so far in Primary 4. On Monday the children received their Burns Poems home with them. They also have a copy of this poem in school. We will be working on learning and practising these poems in school, however, any support you can give your child at home with this would be greatly appreciated. The children will be reciting their poems to the class next Thursday. We’re looking forward to hearing them! 🙂

Your child also received a reading book home with them. Each week your child should read some pages from this book and this should be indicated and signed if possible on the white sheet in your child’s spelling jotter. Your child can read as many pages as they like each week.

In maths this week we have been working on data handling. We created tables showing information we gathered and also used tally marks accurately. The children now are working on creating a graph out of the information in their tables. These are looking fantastic and we’re looking forward to looking at the finished products. We will move onto looking at Venn diagrams next week.

This week we began doing a word boost activity every morning. Word boost helps the children to develop their use of more complex vocabulary when speaking or writing. This week we have looked at words such as “snaffle”, “teetering” and “turret”. This will continue each morning as the way we start our days in Primary 4 🙂

Primary 6 19.1.18

The sound of deep Scottish brogues can be heard throughout the Primary 6 classrooms as we prepare for our Scottish School Assembly. Each pupil has chosen a Scottish poem to learn and two pupils from each class will be put forward to the school competition. Primary 6 are also planning to have a Burns Supper next Thursday , 25th January. Haggis will be available for those who would like to try it and pupils are welcome to wear tartan. Pupils should come to school in uniform and will be given the opportunity to change into any tartan items before the supper.
Mrs Wylie’s math class are working on fractions, decimals and percentages at the moment. It would be great if the pupils could note where we use the above in everyday life.

Show auditions have begun in earnest and Mr Platt is very pleased with the number of pupils who have put themselves forward. We are sure it will be a rocking success!

All pupils have been given their Literacy Circle booklets home to be used with their novels. Tasks have been assigned and each pupil should note this in their booklets. We had a new addition to primary 6 this week ….. We now have a cat! The children can explain!

We had a visit from a Polar explorer on Monday who discussed his expeditions, demonstrated some survival techniques and allowed the pupils to sample some expedition food ….Yum!! We have used this topic as a stimulus for our science lessons this week.

Homework – Reading homework due on Tuesday , spelling words will be given on Mondays with homework due on Fridays .
Maths Homework – we would like to remind all pupils that they have maths homework EVERY WEEK. If we do not give out maths homework in the form of worksheet we still expect the pupils to be practising Times Tables, Fact Families , Number Bonds . We have shown the pupil’s games and activities they can do to practise.

Primary 7 21.01.16

Hello everyone!

We’ve had a very busy week in Primary 7. On Monday we enjoyed a trip to The Risk Factory. There we learned all about the dangers of different places (such as railway lines, building sites and farms) and how to keep safe. We also learned about how to prevent a fire from happening in our homes and saw the effects that vandalism can have on people’s lives. We even got the chance to save 2 people from a burning building and some children were able to call 999 to get help from the fire brigade (this was all a scenario thankfully!) The children all behaved brilliantly throughout the trip – well done! We’d also like to thank all of the parent helpers who accompanied us. Your help is much appreciated 🙂

The children got the chance to show what they had learned at The Risk Factory through creating safety leaflets in writing. The leaflets are really beginning to come together and we hope to have the finished articles up on display before parents night.

This week, rehearsals began for the school show. In the next couple of weeks the children will begin to find out their roles in the show and will have words or songs to practise at home. The school show will be on Wednesday 16th March with one performance in the afternoon and one in the evening. It is expected that all children participate in both performances so please try to keep this evening free if possible.

Our World War 2 Topic is going well. This week we have designed, carefully chosen resources, and created our very own WW2 Gas Masks! They are already looking fantastic. Miss Farren and I were pleased to see the thought and care that went into designing the gas mask and deciding which materials would be most effective. We will upload a picture of the finished articles when they have been completed!

Also, a big well done to Aaron, Molly, Joy & Aidan H who were the winners from both classes of our Burns poetry recital. Tomorrow they will take part in the Whole School Burns Competition! Good Luck to you all 🙂
