Primary 7 16.11.17

Hello!

This week in Primary 7, P7C went swimming at Deans Community High School. We began by playing a game in the shallow end then we went into the deep end and did 2 laps.

Also Michelle from the West Lothian Drug and Alcohol service came in to talk to us on Wednesday about the dangers of second hand smoke. We then started to make leaflets about smoke free homes and zones. These leaflets are being entered into a competition. The best leaflet will be printed professionally and handed out to the whole school community to make everyone aware about the dangers of second hand smoke.

In PE we are doing gymnastics with Mrs Ferguson. We are trying to get perfect landings and shapes in the air. Some of us are going to a competition next week. Wish us luck!

We have also been looking at energy in science. We started making energy posters in small groups about different types of energy.

In art we have been making Japanese cups with clay and we are painting them. We are now adding the finishing touches.

Primary 7 28.9.17

Hello everyone

In Art we have been making Japanese cups. They are looking good so far. Next week we are going to paint them.

We have also been looking at the famous Japanese painting “The Great Wave” and we have been painting with watercolour paint. They are looking great so far.
In writing we have been writing Haiku poems. A Haiku poem has 5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second line and in the third line there are 5 syllables. A Haiku poem only has 3 lines. We also drew pictures to go with our poem.

We have been learning about Japanese music and seeing the differences between traditional Japanese music and Scottish music. The Japanese music sounds unusual to us but it is good.

Did you know that in Japan when a shop is closing they play Auld Lang Syne to tell everyone to leave at the end of the day? 🙂

In RME we have been making power points and posters about different religions like Christianity and Sikhism. Today we presented them to a small group of our friends.

Reminders:

Big Homework is due in next Friday 6th October. If your child requires a new homework sheet or any materials to complete their project then they should speak to their class teacher as soon as possible. Remember they only need to pick one of the eight tasks on the sheet to complete.

Maths and Spelling homework is due in on a Friday every week.

Primary 7 14.9.17

Hello everyone. This week Primary 7 were visited by Yoko and Jess, visitors from the Japanese Consulate. They taught us about the Japanese language. They taught us how to say hello, good afternoon, good morning and numbers up to four in Japanese. They also showed us how to make origami Sumo wrestlers.

Here are some words we learned: Kon’nichiwa (hello/good afternoon), Ohayōgozaimasu (good morning), Arigatō (thank you), Sensei Clark (Sensei means teacher) and the numbers 1-4 (1) Ichi (2) Ni (3) San (4) Shi.

In Art we are making these Japanese Tea Cups with clay. We have also learned what it’s like to be in a Japanese classroom. Thank you Sensei Fox.

As part of our topic we are learning about Global Trade and what type of things you can export from your country. e.g. clothes, games, cars, food, electronics etc. We were teaching others about what trade was like in the Stone Age, the 17th century and now in the 21st century.

In Reading P7C have been reading our new book called “Oranges in no man’s land”. So far it has been a really good book. We answered questions on the 3rd chapter and discussed it with our teacher.

Primary 7 have been really caring buddies. On Tuesday we were reading books with our buddies and we had some playtime with them.

Primary 7 08.09.17

Hello Everyone!

We have been very busy with so many new activities and opportunities. We have had messy hands all week with all the paint we have been using in Primary 1. On Tuesday we went to Primary 1 and made very creative “masterpieces” that we all enjoyed making.

This term we have been learning about Japan and the culture. Next week we are expecting Japanese visitors who know a lot more than we do. In art we have been making terrifying Japanese theatre masks with gum strip, molds and Vaseline that are beautiful so far.

In Indoor P.E, we have been learning how to play Basketball and also the rules that come with it. In Outdoor P.E, we have been making games to play with our little buddies and also making the rules of it in writing, ( It’s a big responsibility looking after our buddies! )

Recently,we have been challenged by our teacher of a way to display information of a religion of our choice and we have been researching with our own devices to find out more.

So it has been a long and busy week and now we have our break (woo-hoo!) so now enjoy your weekend and we will see you next week! Bye! 🙂

Primary 7 31.08.17

Hello everyone! This week has been very busy in Primary 7.

We have been very busy down in Primary 1 with our buddies and helping them with their first lunchtimes in school. We have to be very patient because some of our buddies take forever at lunchtime!

We have been learning about how to be responsible Primary 7’s and have started doing a display for the hall. We have spoken about all the different qualities you need to have to be a responsible P7 and a responsible buddy.

This term our topic is Japan and in Art we have been making traditional Japanese tea cups. Also in Art we have been learning about the language they use in an art classroom in Japan. Thanks Miss Fox 🙂

In P.E Mrs Ferguson is our teacher and we have been playing basketball. We have been learning about the different passes you can use to shoot in the basketball hoops. We have been working in the new hall for P.E.

We have had lots of fun in Primary 7 this week. Have a nice weekend!

Primary 6 9.6.17

Hello everyone

We have had an interesting and busy week in Primary 6. Early in the week we focused on the work of Henri Matisse: the French abstract artist. We looked at two of his most famous pieces “The Snail” and “Icarus”. P6KW made life size images of “Icarus” in a variety of different colours, using different materials to decorate each part of the body. In P6C the children looked at “The Snail” and decided to make abstract images of natural and inanimate objects out of cut out pieces of paper – just like Matisse did! The results look fantastic!

As part of our Inclusion topic the children brought in their own devices and used school laptops to research famous paralympians. The children then chose an interesting and creative way to share their knowledge. Children in P6C created audio recordings, powerpoints, posters and video recordings in order to share their knowledge. We look forward to viewing all of the final products next week.

Mrs Ferguson, our PE specialist, returned from maternity leave this week. The children were pleased to welcome her back and took part in some of the activities that will be stations during our Sports Day. This will take place on Wednesday 21st June. P4-7 will take part in the morning session. We will provide you with more details of this in due course.

Next week we will be learning all about Slovakia as part of our work on the ERASMUS+ Project. The children will be learning about the famous landmarks, traditional food and language of Slovakia. There will be an Open Morning on Friday 23rd June where the children can share their learning with you. We hope you can come.

Primary 6 11.11.16

Hello everyone

Primary 6 have had an excellent week this week.

On Tuesday we went outdoors to do some art work. We used natural materials from the playground like different coloured leaves, berries, twigs and stones to create symmetrical pieces of art. The children worked very well together in groups and we think the finished products are fantastic! You’ll see some examples of the children’s work below.

In Outdoor PE we have began to learn the skills of hockey. This week we learned how to control and pass the ball and in the coming weeks we will be playing small team games together.

Next week we will begin work on our new topic of “A Tale Unfolds”. The children will be working in small groups to create a story that they will eventually write a script for and then perform. We can’t wait to start this project and we are sure that the finished results will be fantastic.

Your child should have brought home a copy of their latest big homework challenge. It is due in on Friday 9th December. Children should plan a short class talk about a current European news story. They can do a powerpoint or poster to accompany their talk. If your child needs any resources from the school (paper, pens, colouring pencils, use of laptop etc.) then they should let their class teacher know as soon as possible.

A quick reminder that PE days are Monday (outdoor PE) and Wednesday (indoor PE but children should also come prepared for being outdoors). Please ensure that your child brings appropriate clothing and footwear to school on these days.

Maths and Spelling homework is handed out weekly. Please look out for them on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Primary 7 – 7.10.16

Thank you to all children (and parents!) who have completed and brought in their 3D working model of a natural disaster. All models and presentations should be in school for Monday. The children will be presenting these on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday next week. We are looking forward to lots of explosions!

The children have been working hard in art with Ms Fox making fabric Scotty dogs and these are beginning to come to life! Some of these will be presented to our ERASMUS visitors in November.

Well done to Rebekah D in P7W for coming second in the P7 girls race at the cross country.

Next week, the book fair is in school. The children will have an opportunity to browse the books on Wednesday next week. The book fair is open at the end of each day and on parents’ night. If your child would like to buy a book, please send in the money and they will be able to buy it on any day that it is open.

We are looking forward to meeting you next week at parents’ night to discuss your child’s progress.

Primary 4 1.9.16

It was lovely to see so many parents on Tuesday night, thank you for coming along to see us. If you couldn’t manage, don’t worry, we have put a class newsletter into your child’s bag as well as a spelling homework exemplar to see the kinds of things we will be doing in the first term of Primary 4.

We have had a busy week this week settling into our new class properly. We have discussed and created our class charter based on the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child. We have used this charter to decide upon our classroom rules. The whole school focus has been on SHANARRI, and within this acronym, Primary 4 have focused on Inclusion. We discussed and gave examples of how we were all included in Carmondean Primary School and then illustrated these ideas using pens and coloured paper. We have sent home the charter we decided on to allow you to see what rules we shall be following this year. These are in the children’s words and what they found important to them. Please could you return the tear off slip at the bottom of the rules letter to show your support and understanding of the importance of following these.

We have been learning about colour as one of the visual elements of Art, and even did a science experiment investigating colour!

We have started planning our Viking topic this week and look forward to learning more about it this term. We have had some fantastic ideas from the children such as making Viking food, creating a small viking village and even creating our very own life sized viking! We also thought of a lot of questions we would like to have answered by the end of the topic which has given Miss Donaldson, Miss Miller and myself lots of food for thought when planning the topic.

Children have been given letters home relating to their achievements and interests. We would be extremely grateful if these could be completed and handed back into school.

Reminders:

Letters to be returned to office: personal information, achievements, agreement of rules.

Please could we ask all items of clothing to have the children’s initials on them for ease of identifying the owners. We have had a few items lost and thankfully found this week, but it would be made easier with names on them somewhere.

Tuesday – outdoor PE kit (warm, appropriate clothing and shoes.)

Thursday – Indoor PE kit (dark coloured shorts and white t-shirt if possible)

– Use of water grid – one night of the week (once home from school) children should place tally marks every time family members use water for any activity. This could be making a cup of tea, washing up, wetting a cloth, running a bath, having a shower. Grids will be made in class and put into spelling homework jotters.
