Primary 2/1 27th August 2020

We have had a very busy week in Primary 2/1 this week.  In Maths the Primary Ones have been working on numbers to 10.  We have been mainly focusing on the correct way to form numbers 0,1 and 2.  We have also been counting together, challenging ourselves to see how far we can go! The Primary Twos have been working hard on some consolidation of addition.  We have been using cubes and number lines to add numbers to 20.

In Language the Primary Ones have been working a little on rhyme.  This is something that you can work on with them at home, asking them if they can think of something that rhymes with cat/bug/pen etc.  We would also encourage you to read rhyming stories together and discuss the words that rhyme.  The Primary Twos have been consolidation blending 4 letter words.  Again this is something that the children can be trying at home, encourage them to try and hear 4 sounds in a word e.g. slug, nest etc.

We have also started our work on SHANARRI in class this week. We have been focusing on SAFE and HEALTHY before moving on to ACTIVE, NURTURE, ACHIEVE and RESPECT next week.  We have been sorting safe and unsafe activities and looking at what foods are healthy and unhealthy.

We would like to remind you to send your child with a bottle with water in it each day, please no juice or flavoured water.  Gym days are Tuesday and Wednesday where children can come to school in their gym kit, which should be suitable for outdoors.

Mrs Muir and Mrs Steel’s Primary Twos

Welcome back to school once again! It was so lovely to see you all yesterday and hear all your news from the last few weeks.  We will be missing you today while you are at home but we have some fun activities for you to do which you can bring back to school tomorrow and share with us and the Primary One boys and girls.  Mrs Steel has given you all two worksheets to complete at home.  One is a writing task where you can list some of the things that you are really looking forward to in P2.  Think back to the things we all talked about yesterday and share them with your adult a home.  The second piece of work links to our story about Super Soap! Think back to what Super Soap told us about handwashing and why it is important-especially now we are back at school.  We would like you to create a poster showing how we wash our hands well.  Mrs Muir will be excited to see them tomorrow and we could even display them around the classroom as a reminder to us all.  The final thing we would like you to try is the game using the link below.  This helps us revise our numbers and its great fun.  We had a little look at it yesterday on the Smartboard.  You can start off with numbers to 20 and then challenge yourself with numbers to 50 or even 100!

Last Day of P1! 26.6.20

Good morning boys and girls!

Can you believe that we are at our very final day of Primary One! You have all worked so hard over the past few months at your home learning and we are all very proud of every one of you-you are all super stars! We hope that you have enjoyed all the tasks you have been set, especially our virtual trip to Disneyland this week.  All the teachers hope that you have an amazing summer-hopefully some places will begin  to open up over the next few weeks so we can all get out and about a little while we are off.  We have loved being your teachers this year and we can’t wait until we can see you properly in August- as big Primary Two boys and girls! Don’t forget to have a look at the transition information that was posted on Tuesday if you haven’t done so already.   Thank you for being wonderful Primary Ones!

P1 4.10.19

We have had another busy week in Primary One.  In Maths we have been working on numbers before, after and between up to 10.  This is something that you can continue to practise at home with your child-try and challenge them and see if they can extend this to 20 or beyond!

We have been focusing on the sounds r and m this week in Phonics.  We have been making ‘r’ in rice and writing’m’ on mirrors.  At home you can be talking about things that start with these sounds and using the other sounds we have learned so far to make short 3 and 4 letter words.

In Writing this week we wrote about our buddies and the lovely things they have done to help us so far in P1. Next week we will be working on a very special wall display along with our buddies- keep an eye our for this outside P3 at parents night!

Primary One 13th September 2019

We have had another busy week in Primary One, continuing to learn the routines of the classroom and bringing ideas to our play areas.  We have been looking at healthy eating this week, starting by sorting foods into healthy and unhealthy.  In the areas around the classroom we have been coming up with fab ideas about how we can incorporate learning about healthy and unhealthy foods in our play.  In the writing areas we have been busy coming up with healthy menus and lists of foods that we like.  In the house corner we have been role playing preparing healthy foods, including some delicious sounding smoothies!  We have also been printing with apples and potatoes and have even opening our own fruit tuck shop.

In language this week we have been focusing on ‘s’ and ‘i’.  At home you can consolidate what we have been learning by looking out for these sounds when you are out and about and thinking of things that have these sounds in them.  Children can also have a go at writing these sounds.

In maths we have been looking at numbers 0-5 and counting forwards and backwards to 20, starting at different numbers.  This is something you could be practising at home or children can be challenged by going further than 20.

Primary One 20.3.19

We have had a very exciting week in Primary One this week with a surprise visitor to class yesterday! We came in to class after lunch to find that a dragon had visited and left us a letter.  The letter explained to us that he needed help rebuilding Fairyland as it was disappearing because we were no longer reading fairy tales.  We have decided to help the fairy tale characters, starting with Jack and today we have been making a beanstalk for him.  Have a look at the pictures to find out what we have been doing in class today.

In Maths this week we have been looking at 3D shapes, their names and properties and having a look around the class and playground for items of different shapes.

Our sound this week is ee.  Have a chat with your child about words that have the ee sound in them around the home.

Primary One Volcano!

Today we have been learning about volcanoes as part of our dinosaur topic.  Mrs Steel prepared a special experiment for us and we made our very own erupting volcano! We added washing up liquid, red food colouring and bicarbonate of soda together in a bottle that Mrs Steel had made to look like a volcano.  Then we added in vinegar and stood right back.  All of a sudden the volcano erupted and there was red lava everywhere! We had great fun with this and could maybe even try it again at home!

Primary One 31st January 2019

We have had another busy week in P1 exploring more of our dinosaur theme.  This week we have been learning about the Triceratops and have been discussing lots of facts about what it liked to eat and what it looked like.  We will be writing about this dinosaur tomorrow and adding to our Dinosaur fact files.

In Language and Maths this week we have been completing assessments of the children’s learning so far this year.  We will be able to share this information with you at parents night in February.

We are looking forward to hearing how the first Families Connect meeting goes this week- I am sure the children are really excited to take part in some fun activities.

We took part in our very first Critical Skills challenge yesterday which was great fun! We had to work with a partner to decide on six items that a paleontologist should take on an excavation with them.  The children then had to come and share with the class what they had chosen and justify their choice.  All the children did so well and had fantastic ideas about why they should bring certain things.  Well done everyone!

Primary One 8th January 2019

Welcome back and a Happy New Year to you all.  We hope that you had a lovely break, it was lovely to see all the boys and girls yesterday and hear all their news from their time off.

This term we will be starting a new topic on Dinosaurs.  We will be introducing this this week and finding out what the children already know and what they would like to find out.  We are excited to see all the fun activities that the children will come up with!

This fortnight’s homework and a new Reading book was sent home today.  Can children please bring in book bags every day as at times we get extra Reading practise?

There will be an extra piece of homework sent out this week in preparation for our annual Scot’s poetry competition.  Each child will be given a poem to learn and recite to the class.  We will also be doing work on this in class but we would appreciate your help at home to learn them.

Gym days this term continue to be Tuesday (outdoor) and Thursday (indoor with Mrs Ferguson).

Reminder that the Families Connect coffee morning is on Thursday 17th January at 2.30 and you are all welcome to come and find out more about the Families Connect programme.

Primary One 6th November 2018

We have had a very busy and exciting week in Primary One with lots of play opportunities based around Halloween and Bonfire Night.  We have been making pumpkin and monster faces in the craft area and also some beautiful firework pictures using straws and brightly coloured paint.  Our Writing areas have also been busy, writing about spooky characters and thinking about words to describe fireworks.

We will be building on this, and the children’s experiences, in our Writing lesson this week by writing a description of a firework.  If possible it would be good to prepare your child for this lesson on Friday by talking to them about what fireworks might look and sound like.

In Phonics this week we have been focussing on the sounds f and o, looking at things that start with these sounds and blending sounds that we have learned together to make short words.

In Numeracy this week we have been continuing work on addition.  We will be formally introducing the + and = signs to the children and they have been using concrete materials to build the sums and find the answer.

Our Topic this term is Toys which the children are showing great interest in.  We will be changing the play areas of the classrooms to tie in with the Topic.  We have been creating toys to display on the walls of our role play areas which are being changed into toy shops.   We will be learning about the forces that move toys, how toys work and are made, and toys from the past.  We are lucky to be having a visit from the museum service who will help us to learn a little more about the toys boys and girls played with a long time ago.  We will be linking our Maths next week to our toy shop and learning about money.  It would be useful if you could talk with your children at home about the different coins we have and maybe even let them have a go at paying for something in a shop with some coins.  We will also be asking the children to prepare a short class talk about their favourite toy to present to the class on 15th November-more details about this on the homework sheet.

Finally- it’s that time of year again-Nativity!  Children now know the part that they have been given in this years nativity and if your child has words to learn they will receive them with the homework tomorrow (7th November).  Please try and practise these as much as possible.

Primary One 2nd October 2018

Thank you again to all the visitors we had to our Open Afternoon/Morning last Thursday and Friday.  The children loved showing you around the classes and letting you have a go at some of the activities they do every day.

This week we will be moving on from our work on ‘Our School’ and will be beginning to focus on ‘Myself’.  The children will be writing personal stories about themselves, drawing pictures of themselves in the craft area and creating characters based on themselves to use in the construction area.  We will also we using play dough to create the features of our faces and making up stories using our photographs.

In Maths this week we will be beginning to work on the concept of addition as combining sets.  At home you can help with this through discussion about every day items like adding the number of plates and spoons on the table or the shoes and coats when getting ready in the morning.

Our sounds this week will be m and e.  We will be looking around for things that start with these sounds and forming them in sand, paint and in jotters.  Again you can help at home by asking your child if they can think of anything in the home that starts with these sounds.

Please remember that Parent Consultations will be held next Wednesday and Thursday.  Please book your slot using the link you were provided on the letter that came home with your child.

Primary 1 Week beginning 19th September

We hope that you have all had a lovely restful, long weekend!

This week we will be having a focus on consolidating and assessing the work we have done so far in the first few weeks of Primary One. Throughout the year we will have regular weeks where we will revisit sounds, common words and number work that we have learned to ensure that the children have a firm grasp of what has been taught so far.

We will also be continuing our topic of Myself and My School.  Last week we had a focus on school lunches which led us onto a conversation about healthy and unhealthy foods.  This will be built on this week in class through a group tasting session of fruit and vegetables.  We are then planning to discuss our favourites, create graphs showing this and then we will write about something we liked and something we didn’t like.

The majority of you indicated that you would prefer to receive a hard copy of the fortnightly homework sheet so we have made the decision to give everyone a hard copy but also post the homework here on the blog for people who would like to access links for games/songs etc quickly and easily.   Please find the link to this below.  If you have any questions about homework please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Reminders-

-Children will now be changing for PE on a Monday. It would be helpful, if possible if children could come with kit on underneath uniform.  Please name all clothes.

-Our P1 Open Afternoon/Morning will take place next Thursday 27th (pm) and Friday 28th (am).  We would love to see as many parents as possible come and find out a little bit more about what and how your child is learning in P1 this year.

Primary 1 3rd September 2018

The children are continuing to settle well into school and are now becoming more familiar with the routines of the classroom.  This week we will be learning s and i in our phonics lessons, continuing to learn songs and actions to go with these.  We will be focusing on finding things that start or end with the sounds that we are learning and the correct formations of  the letters.

In Maths this week we will be learning how to correctly form the numbers to 5 in jotters and on whiteboards.  We will also be singing counting songs and counting forwards and backwards together to 20, starting at different numbers.  In small groups we will be looking at the structure of numbers to 10 using ten frames and rekenreks,  We will be using these regularly in our Maths lessons so this is a good opportunity for the children to become familiar with them.

We introduced our topic ‘Our School’ last week and the children recorded lots of things they knew about school and what they would like to find out in our floor books.  This was a great chance for the children to contribute their ideas about what they would like to learn and have a chance to shape some of the areas in the classroom.  So far we have added registers and teacher’s diaries to the writing table along with labels so the children can make their own stickers which they are really enjoying.  We have been looking at clocks, money and timetables for the day in the Maths area and have been designing and building schools with our blocks.  The children have been enjoying getting ready for school in the home corner by packing lunches and schoolbags and pretending to do homework.

This week your child will get their first Home Learning sheet.  This will be issued on a Tuesday and you will have two weeks to complete it.  There will be some starred activities which we ask that you complete with your child.  The other activities are optional and you can do as many or a few as you and your child prefer.  Anything that has been done can be recorded in their Home Learning book for us to have a look at together back in class. This homework will normally be posted here on the blog but if you require a hard copy this can be arranged. Alongside this, your child will get a new reading book every Tuesday.  Initially these books will be wordless- please encourage your child to discuss the book and the characters and talk about their favourite part. Each book will have an extended story included that can be read to them and will aid discussion.  We ask that you read along with your child at least twice a week and that your child brings their Reading book to school every day.

Reminders-

-P.E will be on Monday (indoors) and Tuesday (outdoors).  We do not require gym kit for the first few weeks, we will inform you when the children will be starting to change.

-Children should have a bottle with them each day to drink from-these should contain water only.

-Please ensure all clothing is labelled.

P2/1 12th June 2018

Well done to everyone who came along to run in our fun run on Saturday-the weather was beautiful and it was lovely to see so many of you out and about.  If any of you have sponsor money please return it to school.

This week we have been working towards our exciting open morning on Friday based around our World or Work challenge.  So far we have discussed what our parents and grandparents do for a living and it has been interesting hearing about the variety of jobs many of you do. Building on this, tomorrow we will be talking about what our dream job would be and using this information to create charts and posters.  We look forward to seeing you all on Friday so we can show you what we have been working on.

Please remember that next week is our annual trip to the beach- please return EE2 forms as soon as possible.

P2/1 trip to North Berwick

Wow! What a fantastic day we have had at the Seabird Centre at North Berwick.  We started off our day by doing a Rockpool Ramble.  We had great fun looking in the rock pools for lots of sea creature.  We were lucky enough to find some starfish, some crabs, sea snails and lots of hermit crabs.  We also spotted some fish and collected lots of lovely shells.  After our picnic lunch we headed back down to the beach to take part in a sandcastle competition.  We all got into teams and built sandcastles then chose which one was our favourite.  We had such a great day and we are all tired out from the lovely sea air!

P2/1 10th May 2018

I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend and the lovely sunny weather!

We are all glad to be back together in class and are getting on with our new topic ‘The Seaside’.  We have been learning all about what the seaside was like a long time ago, what people wore and the entertainment they had.  We have learned about Punch and Judy shows and are starting to make our own puppets to play with in the classroom.

In Maths we have started work on time.  The P1 children are looking at o’clock and half past and the P2 children will be doing work on quarter past and quarter to.  This is something that you can be discussing lots at home to see how well the children are remembering what they have learned.

In Language this week we have been looking at alphabetical order and dictionary work.  The P1 children have been sorting words into alphabetical order and the P2 children have been finding words in a simple dictionary.

Homework will resume next week as normal.

Quick reminder that PE is on Thursday with Mrs Ferguson and PE kit is required then.  We will also be doing outdoor PE on Monday.

P2/1 17.4.18

This week we have been continuing to work on our assembly.  We have been trying really hard to learn our words-  please keep continuing to learn lines at home and encourage loud clear voices! If possible could children come to school with something tartan on Tuesday 24th as the theme of our assembly is Katie Morag and Scotland?

In Language this week the P1s are looking at wh words and the P2s are doing e_e words.  The children are enjoying looking out for these words in their books and in text they see around the classroom.

In Maths the P1s are beginning to add 3 numbers together and will be building on this to make numbers over the 10 boundary. The P2s are beginning to look at groups of numbers using arrays and numbers line.

P2/1 21st March 2018

This week we have been learning a lot about Easter and Easter traditions.  We have been enjoying finding out about how we celebrate Easter and the different traditions we take part in.  Tomorrow we would like to have a go at decorating and rolling eggs.  If possible can could you send a hard boiled egg to school with your child.

We have also been looking at symmetry in Maths this week and designing our own symmetrical Easter eggs.

On Friday we will be visiting the church for our end of term Easter service.

Remember that tomorrow is also a dress down day for Sports Relief.  Children can come in their sports clothes and make a 50p donation.  We hope to be taking part in some sporty activities in class!
