Primary 4 8.10.21

This week has been very busy in Primary 4! We have finished our class novel ‘Yours Sincerely, Giraffe’ and have spent time preparing for our costume party! Photos of the costume party will be posted on our P4 Twitter page when available and we hope the pupils have a lot of fun! The costumes are looking spectacular!

We had a very active French session finding classroom items in French all over the classroom with our French scavenger hunt. In Topic we learned all about Scottish food and produce which made Mr Woodward very hungry! We looked at produce from all over Scotland and the pupils designed some delicious looking dishes to share their knowledge of what is grown and farmed in Scotland.

We have developed our reading further with a great lesson with some other cluster schools on Teams. Pupils learned the art and importance of questioning throughout reading and there were great links to our clarifying and predicting lessons! The story was superb and engaged everyone well and we are looking forward to putting our skills into practice after the holidays!

Primary 4 3.9.21

This week in Primary 4 we’ve started our Scotland topic and the pupils were very excited to share what they want to learn about the country they live in! We had the Kelpies, why the unicorn is Scotland’s national animal, the cities, the history, the landscape, the languages, and much more! We began by trying to draw Scotland, which is difficult enough when you can see a picture but the pupils drew it picture-less and did a fantastic job! Linking back to our ‘The Dot’ artwork, we had lots of Scotland-ish drawings! We have also introduced climbing Munroes as our PE warm-ups; hopefully as a year group we can climb all 282!

We have been developing our typing skills this week now that pupils are very confident logging onto Teams. The pupils played typing games to improve accuracy and then played ‘Beat the Teacher’ to see who could get a higher score! While Miss Morris remained unbeaten, Mr Woodward didn’t fare so well, losing to P4B in spectacular fashion!

We’ve been continuing to read Yours Sincerely, Giraffe, putting on some fantastic character voices and learning about the importance of connecting with each other. We have also learned through about character and looked closely at Professor Whale. We talked about his characteristics and what kind of character he is using some fantastic adjectives to describe him!

Primary 4 11.6.21

This week we have seen our caterpillars grow and become chrysalids! The pupils are all very excited that the metamorphosis from caterpillar into butterfly is beginning and hopefully very soon we will have our beautiful butterflies. During our topic, we have been researching intently looking at different mini beasts which have been started to be put into Sways to present to each other. There has been some very detailed research and we are looking forward to learning lots of new information.

We have continued to look at analogue time in maths and have been looking at minutes past and minutes to the hour and the pupils have picked it up in no time. They have been enthusiastic about learning about the time and we have made our own clocks to tell the time with. We have also been rounding in 10s and 100s with good confidence.

We’re nearing the end of Charlotte’s Web and we’re hoping for a lovely happy ending for all the animals. We created menus for Templeton the rat with the scraps at the fair and it’s safe to say that all menus were suitably and horrifically disgusting!

Over the last couple of weeks we have had presentations from our Chanter and Brass teachers and there has been a real musical buzz from the pupils. There should be a group call going out at some point in the near future to give more information.

Primary 4 28.5.21

We have some new friends in Primary 4 this week to go along with our mini-beasts topic. Our happy little caterpillars have finally arrived and have been wiggling around and have settled in well to Primary 4. They are hungry wee caterpillars and we’re hopeful that in no time at all we’ll see them grow and grow on the way to becoming beautiful butterflies.

Staying with topic we have been developing our art skills this week using pencil sketching to draw some amazing and detailed mini beast artwork. The pupils had the choice of ladybug, spider or worm and the pupils really showed their enthusiasm and their eye for detail.

We have been continuing our recount writing topic and used A Bug’s Life to retell a very dramatic scene with the bugs trying to escape a hungry bird. The pupils were able to retell the scene using great description and story-telling ability. In reading we’ve been making great progress through Charlotte’s Web and the pupils seem to be very enthusiastic about the story. We’ve had some great ideas about how the story will end and some good discussions about the lovely relationship between Wilbur and Charlotte.

Pupils have been strutting their stuff this week in PE with the flash-mob rehearsals in full swing. The smiles on faces and enthusiasm in doing the moves has been amazing to see and we hope they’ll have been cha-cha-cha-ing around the house all week!

Primary 4 21.5.21

Primary 4 has been a hotbed of hard work and creativity this week. We’ve been revising and learning new French words all to do with the weather. With the unpredictability of the weather this week, although maybe typical for Scotland, we have certainly seen a huge range to talk about in French.

We’ve been developing our knowledge of mini-beasts and using videos to take notes and create something new. There was no squeamishness when they were shown videos of insects crawling around and they created some great detailed notes in pairs. They also looked at colour wheels and creating Sways which will be used later on in the term to create creepy crawly based presentations and art work.

Doing greater than/ less than in maths we have been introduced to the Number Croc! Pupils quickly got to grips with knowing which way the jaws of our Croc faced, always open jaws to the biggest number. We’ve also continued to develop our knowledge of place value using 4 digit and 5 digit numbers. Pupils are becoming more and more confident as they continue to learn and the effort they are showing is super.

We had a nostalgic time in writing this week thinking about our last birthdays. Pupils reminisced about what they got up to, who they were with and the food they had and it was a joy to listen to their enthusiastic recounts. We have continued to read Charlotte’s Web and in predicting how Charlotte saves Wilbur we had some wild, wonderful and very imaginative stories!

Primary 4 30.4.21

This week has flown by in Primary 4 with the pupils being as busy and enthusiastic as ever. We started our new topic of Mini-beasts this week and the energy for the topic is sky high! We have had so many stories of mini-beasts and the knowledge of different insects is huge. We started off with some amazing insect art with drawing, painting and building different insects. The creativity was stunning and the different styles on display were impressive. We have spent time designing bug hotels and with the stunning designs it’s safe to say there could be a lot of very well taken care of mini-beasts in the future!

In health we have looked at emergency situations and the pupils performed very effective dramas showing a situation and how it would be resolved. They were confident identifying which emergency service to use and how situations can be made better and they were all so encouraging of each other with fantastic positive feedback. We even had a superbly mimed stretcher on the go!

In maths we have been revising place value and reminding ourselves of how numbers are built. We have also been learning compass points and how we can find our way around using compasses, and how we can help each other move around too.

Happy Friday everyone, it’s been so great to have everyone back after the Easter break! We hope you all enjoyed a super holiday and are loving the amazing weather we’ve been having. We have loved being back in class with everyone and we are very excited for the term ahead.

This week we’ve been finishing off our Viking topic with some Viking based art. We used clay to create some stunning Viking brooches and then painted them. There was a lot of originality and creativity and although it was tough and some of the clay was difficult to work with everyone persevered and the end results are fantastic. Our new topic this term will be Mini-beasts and we’re hoping to get the opportunity for some real life creepy crawly experiences!

We’ve started our class novel this term which is Charlotte’s Web which the pupils have been very excited by and the enthusiasm people are showing, even those who have seen it or read it already, is great. There have been some lively readings and discussions and the predictions of what will happen in the story were so varied and interesting!

Primary 4 20 11 20

Primary 4 have been hard at work this week and in our animals topic we have some superbly skilled researchers! The presentations they are creating about their chosen animal have started to take shape with great exploration of different presentation themes and some very impressive animations and transitions. We know that when they are presented to the class each and every one of them will wow and inform!

We have continued to develop our knowledge of the division by looking at dividing by 8, linking our times tables and arrays to make sure the pupils hit the ground running and they have been very impressive with how well they have taken to this. In maths we have finished off our shape animal zoos and they results are impressive and the knowledge of maths, patterns, shape, colour and design is fantastic!

In our persuasive writing topic we looked at persuading someone at home to watch a film of their choice! We had some very strong arguments for various films and TV shows across the board and the passion the pupils had to put forward their choices was obvious. They certainly are a very persuasive and convincing group!

Primary 4 13 11 20

Today is Children in Need day and we are so excited to see the wonderful and colourful things the pupils will come in with today to celebrate and the enthusiasm pupils have had this week with getting the bands, the Duck Race (come on Ducktor Who!) shows what a caring and selfless year group we have. They are full of enthusiasm for helping those in need and we are so proud of them!

We have also been working hard on our persuasive writing and this week was a challenge that was very close to the hearts of all the pupils. They were writing to persuade Miss Clark and Mr Woodward to give them extra playtime! There were some fabulous arguments, both pros for them and pros for us and the quality of writing was superb! They understood the idea of persuasion well and tried every angle to get their extra playtime.

In our topic this week we have been building a zoo! We have mixed maths and topic and have been using a range of quadrilaterals to create shape animals for our zoo. The pupils used their shapes so creatively and there is such an amazing variety of animals! We have also been researching more of our animals and pupils have begun to create their PowerPoints and researching and the skill involved and the confidence the pupils have had in navigating Kiddle for their research and Glow for their PowerPoints is super. They are certainly finding some amazing facts and presenting in some creative ways!

Primary 4 6 11 20

Research has been in full flow this week as the pupils have chosen their own animals to discover more about in our topic. We have had a huge array of animals, from little hamsters, endangered snow leopards to the Australian quokka, which Mr Woodward had never heard of before! We are looking forward to hearing about all the amazing facts and information that the pupils come up with throughout our topic and we are so pleased and impressed with the enthusiasm and hard work that has gone into it so far.

In our writing we have begun to develop our persuasive writing. We looked at recycling and have created some very informative and persuasive posters to encourage people to recycle. The pupils love of the environment and wildlife really came through when we discussed littering and recycling and the effects on the world and the posters they created really reflected that passion.

We have been continuing to explore times tables in numeracy, looking at dividing by 6. The pupils have been able to link strategies from previous tables to dividing by 6 and this has helped them immensely. In maths we have continued to explore shapes, both 2D and 3D, and we have been identifying the properties of shapes as well as having a lot of fun trying to pronounce quadrilateral and parallelogram!

Children in Need takes place next week and on Friday 13^th November there will be a colourful Dress Down Day for £1. There is also a Duck Race in which pupils can pay 50p to choose one of the ducks which will then be raced on the night of Children in Need. For a small donation there are also Children in Need wristbands.

P4 9 10 20

This week the pupils have really been pushing themselves hard and they have been finishing this part of the term with a great finish! They have been working on their topic and finishing off the ‘Brain Boards’ inspired by Inside Out. They have created some great representations of their feelings and thinking and they have really pushed their creativity. We have watched Inside Out as part of our topic and have had some great discussions about the themes of the film in terms of emotions and resilience. We also used the films in our writing this week when writing film reviews and they have received glowing reviews from the pupils!

In maths we have been continuing to develop our division skills and they have looked at using times tables and arrays and adapting strategies to different numbers. It has been great to see the growing confidence across the classes with numeracy and we are proud of how hard the pupils have been challenging themselves. They have also been challenging themselves well in reading as we have looked at skimming and scanning and inference skills. The pupils have been whizzing through texts to find the information and have had some lively discussions about what answers might be when inferring, realising that there isn’t always one possible answer.

We are so proud and impressed with the pupils and they have done so well this term. Coming back after lockdown and getting back to some sense of normality was no easy task and the enthusiasm and hard work of the pupils has made everything so much easier. We’d also like to thank all our amazing parents who have been so instrumental in helping the pupils to really hit the ground running and who have worked so hard this term to ensure the success of the pupils in returning to school.

Primary 4 2/10/20

Primary 4 have been working superbly this week and we are so proud of the effort they’ve been putting in! We have continued to work on our John Pule artwork and they are looking fabulous. They have been creating beautiful artwork in the style of Moana and used this art to celebrate their achievements. They have taken on board the art style very well and have added their own creativity and flair and we can’t wait to see how they will look when they are all completed! In our topic we also watched Zootropolis with a view to writing our own film reviews next week. The pupils took in all the themes of resilience and trying your hardest and have learned all about character, setting and plot.

In our writing we were looking at ‘All About Me’ using a variety of description. Pupils were able to describe themselves and their hobbies and they have done a great job of painting a picture with their words! The length and quality of writing is fantastic and the pupils took to the task with enthusiasm.

In maths we have been looking at dividing and problem solving. Pupils have found some of the tasks a bit tricky and we have seen great resilience and co-operation as the pupils have been determined and have completed the challenges very well. We have also been looking at weight using grams and kilograms and converting between the two.

Even though it has been a short week this week we have managed to pack a lot in and the pupils have come back raring to go and putting in so much effort. We have continued to look at developing resilience strategies and this week used ‘Inside Out’ as our inspiration to create our very own ‘Brain Boards’. The creativity and enthusiasm on display was great to see and they have created some spectacular pieces of work! We have also continued to look at the work of artist John Pule in connection with our topic and have created artwork based on his art style to celebrate our achievements. We have a very achieving group and they are fabulous at celebrating not only their successes but the successes of each other!

We will begin handing out homework starting from next week and the majority of this will be through Teams assignments with hand in dates and more detailed instructions posted there. Your child’s log in for Glow has been stuck into the front cover of their Homework Diary. We have continued in PE to learn about skipping and develop our co-ordination skills. Pupils have been very full of energy for this topic and have been showing off all kinds of skipping techniques. It has also been lovely to see pupils helping and encouraging each other and teaching each other skipping skills!

Please remember we have PE outdoors Mondays and Fridays. As the weather is getting colder and potentially wetter please ensure your child comes dressed appropriately for the weather that day.

Primary 4 4.9.20

It has been a very busy week in Primary 4 with so much hard work and effort on display. The pupils have been continuing to explore the SHANARRI indicators this week. We have also been looking at feelings and strategies to help us when we aren’t quite feeling ourselves. The pupils have found some great ways to help themselves and each other and it has reinforced what a kind and caring year group we have! Next week we will start our topic all about resilience and achieving our goals and we’ll be starting with Moana as well as looking at some Polynesian artwork in the style of John Pule.

We have continued to look at division and multiplication and have seen the pupils become more and more confident challenging themselves and tackling harder problems. Pupils have been using their own strategies to try and learn their tables and answer problems and we will continue to develop their knowledge of times tables in a range of ways. In maths we have developed further our skills in measuring and have looked at how to convert from metres to centimetres and what would be the best way of measuring specific objects.

Pupils have been so engaged and have been very much pushing themselves in writing and we have seen so much creativity and enthusiasm in their stories and they have written some very interesting adventures. We have seen pupils exploring space, jungles, the sea and even had a few writing about falling through the sky. The stories have been dramatic, descriptive and we are impressed with the variety of writing on display!

Please remember that PE takes place outdoors on Monday and Friday so ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather that day. Pupils come to school in the PE kit and will stay in their kit for the day. Please note that the children should also bring a full bottle of water to school each day. This can be refilled upon request throughout the day.

Primary 3 Last Day of Term!

Hello and welcome to your last day in Primary 3. We hope you’re all extremely excited to be getting into the summer holidays after today and you can all take a well-earned break! We also hope that you are all very excited about moving into Primary 4, getting to go to a new classroom, meeting new teachers, getting to use the fancy smart boards! We will miss you all immensely and we could not have asked for a better year group. You have filled us with joy, curiosity, laughs, excitement, pride and all of the smiles the whole year and we could not be more impressed or proud at you all for how well you have done this year. You have all been absolute superstars throughout your home learning and we are so delighted that you have coped with incredibly difficult times so very well. It has been a privilege to have been your Primary 3 teachers and we hope that you all have amazing summers, you’ve earned it!

Hello Primary 3, we hope you are all feeling great and raring to go for the summer. You have nearly made it and we hope that you are super excited for the end of term!

To mark the end of term, let us know how you are doing with your celebration plans and share with us what you plan to do. Today, how about coming up with a short play list of 5 of your favourite songs that make you smile. You can play these on Friday during your celebration, whilst having your healthy party food you planned out yesterday.

For your final reading task we thought that since there are so many keen readers we could start a Teams book club! We will set up a section on Teams where you can make recommendations to each other, create artwork of your favourite books or characters, you can chat about books you like, ask people about books they like. Hopefully we will have a large list of books that will keep you all going all through the summer!

As another Summer art activity, why not try this dream catcher to catch all of your hope and dreams over the Summer. You could make it from a paper plate, or an old CD.

Good morning Primary 3, it’s Wednesday already! This week is flying by and it’ll be Friday before you know it! I hope to see lots of you on our Class Chat today at 10am to hear all your stories and to find out what you are going to get up to over the summer. Miss Smith’s class chat at 10 has a theme this week – Word Wednesday! Tune in to play a word game!

For today’s writing task we are thinking of a creative summer story. If any of you have seen Chitty Chitty Bang Bang you will know that the family take a trip to the beach, fall asleep and when they wake up their real adventure begins. We’d like you to do the same. Write a story about you and some friends or family on a trip to the beach. How would you enjoy yourselves on the beach, what does you beach look like, where is your beach? And then you fall asleep after much enjoyment. When you wake up your adventure begins, and it can literally be anything you like. Something happens when you awaken on the beach. What happens, do you travel anywhere, what problems do you encounter that you have to overcome? Let your imaginations run as wild as you can, be as creative as you can. You have completely free reign after you wake up on the beach, we are so excited to see what wild and wonderful stories you can come up with!

Today’s summer art involves using straws to create a different paint effect!

Create a lovely summer meadow using the following instructions:

Straw Art – Creating Summer Meadows.

Materials – Straw

Paints

Water

Paper

Paintbrush

You may want to begin by putting a ‘wash’ of green on your paper. This will give you the base colour for your meadow, then you can begin to add the flower colours on top. Place a big watery blob of paint at the centre of where you want your flower to start. Use your straw to blow your paint in different directions to create lots of lines coming from the first blob. Use different colours to make the flowers interesting and Summery. Here is a real wild flower meadow to give you some ideas of colours.

For your ‘End of Term Celebration Challenge,’ why not use your knowledge of healthy eating and plan to prepare a healthy snack for your party goers! Will you have to weigh out ingredients? Do you have enough ingredients? Will you have to use your health and hygiene knowledge? Or remember safety instructions using things around the kitchen? Remember to plan out quantities so that you have enough for everyone. Let us know what delicious food you are planning to prepare for Friday!

Happy Tuesday Primary 3, we hope you have been enjoying the beginning of your week and you had fun starting to think about the summer and what you’d like to get up to over the holidays!

For today’s reading activity we are thinking about where you could read. You have thought about what you could read over the summer but we thought it would be fun to encourage you to think about the where. We also thought it would be fun to mix reading and den building, which we’re sure you’re all masters at! Why not spend today planning a reading den which could be a sanctuary for you to spend time in reading your favourite books? And if you have time and if you are allowed you could actually build it!

If you are still up for planning an end of term celebration that your family can join you in on Friday, today’s challenge task is to create a banner with your celebration title on it! You could do one big long banner, and practise your bubble writing, or even make your banner like little triangle bunting flags! It is up to you – be as creative as you like! Send us some snaps if you manage to make one – we would love to see!

Materials: Anything you can find in the house to print with and make interesting patterns from their textures.

A4 Paper cut in half into a long thin strip

Begin with a long, thin piece of paper. Find objects around the house or junk that can be cut into circles and painted on.

Paint onto your cut shapes with different colours. Press them into your paper to print and create your ice cream balls.

Can you find something you can print on to make the ‘criss cross’ of a cone? How about a tangerine net? Or perhaps some polystyrene you can score into? Or thick cardboard?

Good morning Primary 3 and welcome to your last week as Primary 3s! We hope you have all had spectacular weekends and you are ready to make the most of your week before the summer holidays. Please make sure that you are enjoying yourselves and you take advantage of any great weather we have. Remember if we were in school there would be lots of outdoor learning taking place in the sun!

Because it is the last week of school, we have some fun tasks for you to do!

This week, we will have a week-long celebration challenge, where each day you can complete a task, if you want to, so that by Friday, you can host a big end of term, end of P3 celebration.

Your first task for our celebration is to think of a title for your celebration. Alliterative titles are always catchy – see if you can use the same letters at the beginning of your words in your title, eg. P3’s Perfect Party.

A fun Art idea for today is to make your very own Sunburst painting. Let’s see if we can encourage the sun back for the rest of this week using as many colours as you can so it is lovely and bright!

Materials:

Paper

Paints

Paintbrush

Pencil

Draw a small circle in the middle of the paper. From the outside edge of the circle, use a rule to help you draw straight lines to the edge of the paper. Try to ensure your lines are the same distance apart all the way round the circle.

Paint each section in a bright colour. You can use the same colour twice, just ensure the same colour is not used in 2 sections side by side.

You could even use this as a decoration for your end of term celebration on Friday?

For your reading today we would like you to take some time to plan your summer reading. We know we have lots of keen readers and so we would love to see what books you are excited to read in the summer holidays. It would be lovely to see a display of your summer reads and you could even tick them off when you’ve read them!

For the final week, our Rights Respecting Schools Article is about minority culture, language and religion.

Some activities you may wish to do are:

Can you find out how to say ‘”Hello, how are you?”’ in 5 different languages. Share with friends and see how many you can get as a group.
Culture means traditions that groups follow like food, dances, song and clothes. Draw or write about what is important in your culture. Then think of someone who comes from a different culture and share safely with them what is important about culture for each of you. This could be someone you know or you could pick a country or indigenous group and write to a child of that country or group.
Watch ‘If the World were a Village of 100 People’ to find out about people around the world.
What does it mean to be from a minority or indigenous group? Find out what the words mean and then think about which minority groups there are in the UK. Why do you think Article 30 is important and how does it link to last week’s work on Article 2?

Here’s a little fun Maths activity using your multiplication facts and division facts. One is both Mild and Spicy – if you choose mild – just complete the sums for the times tables you are comfortable with. This should be; 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 10x.

It’s the end of the week Primary 3 and we have been incredibly impressed with all of the superb work you have been sending us and how much effort you are putting in, we’re so proud of all of you. Please make sure you take time for yourselves as today you would be getting your Free Time Friday time. We know that you all have definitely earned it all! We hope you all have amazing weekends and we are looking forward to next week when we can hear all about the wonderful things you have been up to!

For the final ocean themed activity of the week, why not spend some time in the kitchen (you know there’s a food based activity if Mr Woodward’s involved!) making these delicious ocean cupcakes?
