Welcome to Primary 1

Hello All,

Welcome to all our new Parent/Carers and Primary 1 children!

We were very excited to welcome our new Primary 1’s who looked very smart in their school uniforms. With the help of their buddies they have already started learning school routines and are developing independence carrying out these tasks.

We have started our week with the story of the Rainbow Fish which is a great stimulus for discussions about similarities and differences and friendships. The children have also produced some lovely art work from the story.

This week we have also discussed the class charter with the children which is based on the UNCRC (United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child). We have focussed on the children’s rights to be safe, learn and play at this stage. We will be sending the charters that have been agreed with the children home for you to discuss with your child and would be very grateful if you could sign and send this back to show your support.

The children will have their first ‘Freetime Friday’ session on Friday (24th August.) This is reward time which children earn throughout the week. To make this special we are going to allow the children to bring toys from home on a trial basis. We will review this throughout the year if it does/does not work well. You will receive a letter before Friday with details.

The termly newspaper and ‘Meet the Teacher’ next Wednesday (29th Aug) will give further information about what is happening the rest of this term in addition to our weekly updates on the blog.

If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to ask teachers at the end of the day or phone the school office.

Primary 1 Update 6.6.18

Hello All,

This week we are continuing to develop our knowledge of life on a farm and have been creating eye catching posters with a partner displaying key facts about sheep. We are looking forward to visiting a real life working farm this week. Also in school we will be making our own bread.

In Maths we have been continuing our work with money and counting out amounts including 5p coins.

In Literacy, the children have been learning about vowels and identifying them in the middle of words.

Next week, we will have a focus on the World of Work and the classes will be researching a wide variety of different occupations. Please can you discuss any occupations within the family with your child and the responsibilities/ daily activities that come with the job.

We have been continuing to practise hard for our upcoming assembly – we hope to see as many of you as possible on Tuesday (12th June).

Primary 1 Update 9.5.18

Hello Everyone,

We hope you all enjoyed the lovely long sunny weekend!

Just a short but as always busy week this week!

In Writing the children have been learning about the features of fairytale stories and for the past 2 weeks we have taken time to create stories with a beginning, middle and end, come up with good and bad characters and created ‘happily ever after’ endings.

In addition to the normal class PE specialist time, over the next couple of weeks, the children will also have the opportunity to have a taster session of Judo.

In Science, we are continuing with our work on electricity. The children have been learning about appliances which use mains or batteries to provide electricity.

Primary 1 Update 25.4.18

Hello All,

This week we really enjoyed a visit to the forest as part of our Enchanted Forest topic. We enjoyed observing and taking photos of trees, plants and wildlife. We made bark rubbings using a crayon and paper and collected a range of leaves and twigs to create a woodland picture back in the classroom.

In Maths this week we have been continuing with work on data handling by creating and interpreting picture graphs and consolidating our work on tally marks.

In Writing this week we are going to create our very own class fairytale with special openers like ‘Once upon a time…’, ‘Far, far away…’ etc. If your child has any traditional fairytales at home, it would be great if you could explore the features together including the opening, the magic, the ‘happy ever after’ and the main characters.

Please remember P1 gym day is a Thursday and we would be very grateful if you could ensure your child has PE kit with them on this day.

Primary 1 Update 12.4.18

Welcome back! We hope everyone had a good Easter break and the children certainly seem well rested and raring to go for our final term in Primary 1.

This week the children have been very excited about the arrival of Brambleberry – a forest elf from an enchanted forest in Perthshire!

They wrote some fantastic descriptions about him using their knowledge of sounds and tried hard to include some wow words. He will be helping them learn lots about the forest including habitats and different types of trees. The children will have the opportunity to design and build their own fairy house with their Primary 7 buddy on Tuesday. Please can you send any materials in that they may wish to use e.g. empty cereal/shoes boxes, clean yogurt cartons/juice bottles or any craft materials to decorate.

In Maths, the children have been gathering and presenting information in different ways e.g. tally marks, pictograms etc. We are also continuing to practise telling o’clock and half past times on digital and analogue clocks.

Primary 1 PE is still on a Thursday and we would be very grateful if you could send the appropriate kit with your child on this day.

Primary 1 Update 14.3.18

Hello All,

This week in Primary 1, we have had a very active time raising awareness for Sport Relief. Each class is running as far as they can each day and we will add the distances together to see how far around Scotland we have run as a school! Thank goodness the weather has improved!!

In RME, we have begun learning about the Easter Story and Easter Traditions. As part of this the children will decorate and roll their own egg next Wednesday (21st March). We would be very grateful if you could please send in a boiled egg on that day for your child to decorate.

This week the children will take part in an Easter Egg Hunt on Thursday organised by the PSA.

In Maths, we are continuing our work on Time and have been focusing on telling half past times on analogue clocks. Please help your child to practise this whenever possible.

We have begun our new topic – The Enchanted Forest and have started by researching facts about woodland animals and will be learning about nocturnal and diurnal animals.

Primary 1-Snow Day Number 3

Good Morning Everyone

We hope you’ve been having great fun in the snow! When you are tired of building igloos, snowmen, snow dogs, snow tunnels, having snowball fights or doing snow angels here are a few activities to be getting along with whilst you warm up!

Maths

If you are able to print at home, you could try some of the games attached – all you need is a dice and 2 coloured pencils or 2 coloured bits of paper/ coins as counters.

Try playing some of the number games we play in school with someone at home.

-Choose any number to start between 1 and 10 and count up to 30 and back down.

-They choose 3 numbers (e.g. 11,12,13) you must say next 3 numbers (e.g. 14,15,16) see how high you can go

-They choose how many claps to do and you count them silently – tell them how many claps they did at the end!

Language

If you have any old magazines/newspapers at home-can you find any of your common words (from your little blue jotter) and cut them out.

Practise clapping the syllables of everyone’s name in your family, even pets or your favourite toys names. e.g. oc-to-nauts!

On a Friday we normally do dictation – see if someone at home can read out a sentence with at least 2 th words and you try to write it down – can you draw a picture to go with it?Remember your finger spaces full stops and capital letter at the beginning!

If you are able to print at home, try out some of these games – you can teach someone at home how to play roll and read!

Primary 1 Update 8.2.18

Hello All

We’re having another very busy week in Primary 1 this week!

In Maths we have been continuing with the concepts of Subtraction and Time and in particular telling the time using digital clocks.

In Health, the children have been discussing things that are safe/ not safe to go on their body. Next week we will be discussing things that are safe/ not safe to go in their body along with which adults they can trust.

On Thursday we were lucky to have visitors from Barclays Bank to teach us about money. We really enjoyed taking part in a treasure hunt to find and identify coins, playing a matching coins game and choosing items to buy with the coins we were given.

Also this week we have had our whole class photos taken and were delighted to see so many of you at parents night.

Please remember that next week is a short week in school as the children are on holiday on Monday (12th February) and Tuesday (13th February).

Primary 1 Update 25.1.18

Hello All,

We’ve had a very busy week in Primary 1. We have been practising our Scottish poems and songs and learning all about Robert Burns and how people celebrate Burns Day. We really enjoyed trying some Scottish foods including haggis and oatcakes and especially liked the shortbread! We listened to Auld Lang Syne, some Red Hot Chilli Pipers bagpipe music and some poetry recitals.

Also this week , as part of our Dinosaur topic, we have been learning about the role of Paleontologist. We will be excavating dinosaur bones in our role play area and solving the puzzles to create the skeleton of a T Rex and Brachiosaurus! We also had a turn at using tools to excavate some fossils (chocolate chips from chocolate chip cookies!)

This week in Maths, we are continuing with the concepts of subtraction and telling the time.

In Writing, we wrote letters to Professor Rex telling him how we are looking after the egg that he delivered and asking him lots of questions. We decided it would take too long to send so we sent the letter by email as a class. We are excited to see his reply. We will keep you updated!

Primary 1 w/b 8/1/18

Hello All

We hope you had great fun over the holidays and we are glad to see you all back safely.

We have a very busy term ahead of us with two exciting topics – Dinosaurs and The Enchanted Forest. This week a mysterious egg was delivered to school for us to look after from a Professor Rex.

We are not sure what is in it – we will keep you updated!

In Maths we have started to learn about the Months and Seasons before moving on to telling the time on analogue and digital clocks. We will also be introducing the concept of subtraction next week.

In Language the children have been consolidating sounds and blending these together and are continuing to learn rhyming patterns with a focus on -an words this week.

Primary 1 Update 7.12.17

Hello Everyone

Primary 1 have been getting into the festive spirit this week with our Pupil Christmas Lunch and the fantastic Wizard of Oz Pantomime on Wednesday. It was also great so many of you made it along to our Christmas Fair and made the night a huge success!

This week we are beginning a block of PE with our PE Specialist Mrs Ferguson. Please can all children bring their indoor PE kit every Thursday.

In Writing this week, the boys and girls were excited to write letters to Santa. We are continuing to introduce new sounds and blending them together to read and write words.

In maths, we have been learning to write and sequence numbers above 10 and will be moving onto pattern.

Next week, we will be having our nativity dress rehearsal. If your children have been asked to bring in any clothes for their costume we would be extremely grateful if you could send them in before Tuesday 12th December.

Primary 1 Update 8.11.17

Hello All,

This week in Primary 1 we are beginning to get into full swing with our nativity practices and have given out some parts. If your child comes home with words, please can you help them practise saying these loudly and clearly. The children are also working hard to learn the songs for their performance.

In Maths this week we are continuing to work on addition and have begun to learn about 2d shapes and their properties. To help with the concept of addition children may enjoy the following game.

This week the children are focussing on imaginative writing and were excited to imagine what their toys do when children go to sleep – some great imaginations in Primary 1!!!

Our Toy Shop Role Play Areas are up and running and the children are really enjoying taking on the roles of customer and working at the checkout. We used their ideas to create the areas and so far have unicorns, teddies, cars and trains in them!

Primary 1 Update 25.10.17

Hello All,

It’s great to see everyone back safe and well-rested after the holidays, ready for a busy new term.

This week in Maths we have been learning to combine sets of objects and are continuing to practise forward and backward number sequences with higher numbers.

We are continuing to learn new sounds and working hard to blend these together to read words.

The children were very excited to hear our new topic for this term is all about Toys. They enjoyed sharing their favourite toy with their class and have been mind mapping ideas for their own Toy Shop role play area.

This week is also our School Halloween Disco – Thursday 26th October – we look forward to seeing lots of you there.

Nativity season will soon be upon us and we are beginning to learn songs and actions. If your child is given a speaking part please can you help practise the words at home.

Primary 1 Update 11.10.17

Hello All

This week in Primary 1 we have been continuing to learn new sounds and are working to blend them together to read and write words. In Writing we are working hard to add more detail to our picture plans which helps us to think about what we would like to write. This week we wrote about a trip that we have enjoyed – the children loved sharing their experiences of trips to the park, the soft play, the shops and even the fun fair!

In maths we are continuing to work on number formations, recognition of numbers and recognising sets without counting e.g. dice patterns.

Please remember that next week is the October holiday week – the children will finish on Friday 13th and will return to school on Tuesday 24th October.

We are looking forward to seeing many of you at parents night on Wednesday (11th) and Thursday (12th) this week.

Our topic after the October holidays will be Toys. Please could your child bring their favourite (smallish!) toy to school to share with the class on Wednesday 25th October.

Reminder – Halloween School Disco is on Thursday 26th October.

P1 Update 13.9.17

Hello All,

We are enjoying another busy week in Primary 1. In Maths this week, the children have been taking part in Scottish Maths Week Activities which aim to develop a wide range of skills through problem solving in a fun context. In topic work, the children are continuing to learn about their senses and in particular sight. We gathered information on colour of eyes in class and created a class pictogram.

In Literacy, we are continuing to work on further sight vocabulary and initial sounds . We would be very grateful if you can continue to practise recognition and formation of these at home. Also this week the children have had the opportunity to work with their buddies during a valuable paired reading activity.

Next week, as part of our focus on hearing and sound, we are hoping to make our own musical instruments and would be very grateful if you could please send any small empty plastic water bottles (disposable kind) in to school to help with this on Wednesday (20.9.17).

Please remember next week is a short week due to holiday Monday, Tuesday (18/ 19.9.17)

Primary 1 Update 7.6.17

Hello

First of all thank you to everyone who was able to come along to the super Primary 1 Assembly on Monday. They children did very well and all remembered their lines.

We are having another busy week continuing work on our farming topic and were excited to welcome a Royal Highland Trust Volunteer on Tuesday to help us learn lots of new facts about livestock and arable farming. She even showed us how to use a crook to hook the sheep! We really enjoyed it and will be writing a letter to say thank you during our writing lesson.

In maths, we are continuing to consolidate learning about money through our class farm shop role play and working to improve mental recall of addition facts up to 10.

We are also lucky to be invited along to see the P4/5 show dress rehearsal and are excited to see friends and siblings on the stage!

We will keep you posted on the many events coming up in the last few weeks of term including Sports Day, Beach Trip and Open Morning.

Primary 1 Update 15.5.17

Hello All,

The children were very excited to begin our farming topic last week and they have been learning all about Arable and Livestock Farming. Over the coming weeks we will be learning about farm machinery now and in the past, farming produce from different animals and how to grow crops,aswell as using the topic as a stimulus for learning across the curriculum and in particular Writing and Art. We hope to welcome a representative from the Royal Highland Education Trust to talk to the children about life on farm at the beginning of June.

In Maths, the children have been studying money. They have been learning to identify coins and add coins together to pay for items. This week the children will have the opportunity to consolidate their learning in a class farm shop.

As part of our farming topic the children will be learning to make butter this week. This will then be followed up in writing with the children writing their own list of instructions.

Also this week, the children will be given parts for their upcoming assembly. If your child is given words to learn, we would really appreciate if you could help them practise these at home.

Primary 1 Update 2.5.17

Hello All,

I’m sure you’ll agree this term is flying by and with another short week this week, we are busy making the most of the children’s remaining time in Primary 1! Please remember that children are on holiday this Thursday (4 th May). Last week the children made a fantastic job of their fairy houses along with the help of their Primary 7 buddies. The teachers were very impressed, not only with the standard of finished product but the hard work and creativity the children put into them. Thank you for all the materials sent in from home. This week the children had an opportunity to assess their fairy houses by giving 2 stars and a wish – an important skill to develop as they become more independent in their learning.

In maths, the children are continuing to work with o’clock and half past times in words and on digital and analogue clocks. Please help your child to practise this skill in everyday activities whenever possible.

In Science the children have been learning about food chains and have created basic examples by themselves. This week they will begin to study water, it’s features and uses.

The children will be saying goodbye to Brambleberry, the forest elf this week and will be beginning their next topic on farming next week.

Primary 1 Update – 7.11.16

We have a busy week ahead of us in Primary 1 with preparations in full swing for the arrival of our Erasmus visitors next week. The children are beginning to learn a Scottish song to welcome the visitors and will be creating a Scottish gift to present to them. Also over the past week the children have been auditioning for parts in the nativity. All children in Primary 1 will take part, some may have words to learn. Please check your child’s homework diary to help them with this if required.
In Maths, we have started learning about the concept of addition using concrete materials. This can be followed up at home by combining 2 sets of everyday object e.g. pennies, sweeties, toys etc.
We are continuing to introduce initial sounds and blending these together. The children will be applying their knowledge in their new reading book and in writing tasks.
