Famous Failures

This week in our Growth Mindset lunchtime club we have been looking at famous failures. A lot of famous people in the past have been discouraged but then went on to succeed. Here are a few examples:

  • Albert Einstein wasn’t able to talk until he was four years old and teachers said that he would never achieve much.
  • Walt Disney was fired from his newspaper job for lacking original ideas.
  • Lionel Messi was cut from his football team when he was 11 after he found out he had a growth hormone that made smaller than most kids his age.
  • Oprah Winfrey was fired from her job as they said she wasn’t fit for television.

And those are just four of millions.

Watch out for our growth mindset celebrity spotter display at reception.

P7a go Eco Wild!

During Eco week Primary 7a set themselves the challenge of creating life-like wildlife art work.   It took a lot of perseverance (and working through our frustrations)  to create images that had all the correct visual details that would bring our wild animals to life.  Have a look at some of our finished masterpieces!

We also investigated food chains and webs in our science work, identifying ‘producers’, ‘primary consumers’ and ‘secondary consumers’.  We considered and discussed the changes that can happen in an ecosystem and to food chains when we make changes in our world.

It’s more fun that it sounds, especially when you get to learn by singing (and dancing for those who felt like it) the information!

P1 Pirates

This week we have started our new topic – ‘Pirates’.  The boys and girls found a treasure chest in the playground last week and this week they also found a pirate hat and sword so now we know the treasure chest was definitely left by pirates.  We have started to think about what we know already and what we would like to find out about pirates.

P1b used their ICT skills in Clicker 6 this week to take their own photographs and to use the painting tools to make themselves look like pirates.  Be warned – some of these pirates look a bit scary!!!!

Lots of pirate fun was had in the structured play area too.  Some of the children enjoyed pirate jigsaws, others played with the pirate ships and a few people took on the maths challenge of ordering pirate pictures in size order.  Well done!

Mrs Smail has been working very hard on turning the role-play area into our pirate ship.  It looks fab and we can’t wait to use it next week.  Thank you so much.

P1 Superstars

Another busy week in Primary 1!  This week we have been revising our number stories to 10 in a variety of different ways.  We made paper chains, we coloured in ten frames and wrote down the different sums we made and we coloured in rainbows to help us link up the facts.  We are getting much better at pairing up numbers that add together to make 10.

We have also been practising our numbers to 20 and have been writing the numerals and counting objects accurately up to 20.

During our library time this week the boys and girls worked hard to use their reading skills to sound out some words in their books.

Olivia really impressed Mrs Lloyd when she found an Oxford Reading Tree book and sounded out almost all of the words perfectly.  She then even offered to help Nathan C when he had a go at reading it.  Nathan also did very well!  Thank you to Mrs Little who has very kindly displayed our Cat in the Hat rhyming art work in the library.  Doesn’t it look good?!

We have been working on becoming healthier and have started to walk a mile a couple of times a week.  Everyone has managed to walk the full distance and showed good stamina. Well done!

This morning we had a special visitor in class as Abi and her mum brought in baby Lawson.  He was so well behaved and the boys and girls were being very quiet and gentle with him.  Thank you for bringing him in to meet us all.  We all thought he was so cute.

Ahoy there !!!

At the beginning of the week P1a received a second clue about who the treasure chest was from ! We found a hat and a sword and decided it was from a Pirate!

It’s from a swashbuckler – Daniel G

We enjoyed playing with the pirate ships in the structured play area and are waiting for our pirate ship role play area to be completed !

We have also been making Pirate passports and thinking about what Pirates look like. Some of us have written about what items a Pirate would have.

In maths, we have been continuing to practise our number facts to 10 and counting up to 20. We have also been learning to share objects out equally between two people !

P1a have also been learning  about healthy eating this week. We found out that we have the right to have a healthy diet!  We have been sorting the healthy and unhealthy foods on to different plates.

The apple stops us from getting sick – Fraser

Bad food can rot our teeth – Leah

On Thursday, we made yummy fruit salads and we enjoyed tasting them !!

My  fruit salad is yummy – Cole

P1a have also started taking part in the daily mile challenge. Twice a week we go for a walk around the playground and the aim to be get better at walking and get fitter.

Sur le Pont d’Avignon

Last week the girls and boys in the nursery were introduced to Camembear’s new friend Loulou who has come for a visit after the Easter holidays. Everyone said ‘Bonjou’ to Loulou and told her their name when asked ‘Comment tu t’appelles?’

During their holiday in France, Loulou and Camembear went to Avignon and had their photograph taken on the bridge there. We put Loulou and Camembear in the middle of a circle and danced around them singing the song ‘Sur le pont d’Avignon’.

Everyone had fun singing and doing the actions. Loulou and Camembear were very happy as it reminded them of their holiday.

Busy First Week Back for P4- Ecotastic!!!

For Eco week we have been designing a sleeve for a bottle of hot water to stop the heat from coming out. We worked in home teams to decide on the materials and how to wrap it. We took the temperature every ten minutes and recorded the results.

We learned how to make paper. Brooke thought that it was fun making it and getting her hands messy!

P4 and P4/5 had their Easter assembly. Isabel thought that we taught the parents about the meaning of Easter and what happened after the story that we told from Darren. Amy and Adam handed over a cheque for £200 to Ms Barr for Jak’s Den Charity. This was money that the class raised through our Christmas enterprise work. Zoe thought that the assembly was a huge success and so did everybody else.

We had an Eco Wildlife Art competition. There were lots of super entries. Matthew from P4 won one of the prizes. Well done Matthew. We are very proud of you.

First week back!

P2 have had a very exciting first week back!

To finish our dinosaur topic we learnt all about palaeontologists and we turned into palaeontologists for the afternoon! It was our job to carefully dig the chocolate chips out of the cookie without damaging the cookie or the chips. It was very tricky but we all managed to safely dig out the chocolate chips.

As part of Eco week, we had a visit from ‘Bag Girl’ who taught us how to fight junk monsters by reducing, reusing and recycling our waste. We also learnt a song that will remind us to take canvas bags with us when we go shopping.

058

In teams we had to sort rubbish into groups of metal, plastic or cardboard/paper.

077 078

We looked at old junk and shared our ideas of how we could reuse it. Some excellent ideas were to turn bubble wrap into a dress or use a kitchen roll tube as a golf club.

In maths we are learning to tell the time and are already super at reading ‘o’clock’ and ‘half past’ on analogue clocks.

086

As part of the ‘mile a day’ challenge we joined together with P2/3 to walk 1 mile around our playground. We had great fun getting fit!

Super Ted came back to class this week after his adventure home with Ayla and had a lovely new jumper! We think he looks very cute now.
