Icy Fun in Nursery

Yesterday some of us wrapped up and went into the nursery garden to play in the snow.  They noticed that the water in the water tray had frozen and that the birds had left footprints in the snow (before the boys and girls left theirs!).

To extend this activity we brought some of the ice into the nursery to play with.

They managed to get some of the stones out of it and used them to help break the ice up.

Here are some of the children’s comments.

“It’s frozen water” – Chloe

“You have to carry it in a bucket or your hand will be cold” – Suman

“It’s so cold and slippery” – Marley

“Ice is frozen outside” – Noah

“The water is freezing” – Neve

“It is cold because it came from the ground” – Jenna

“It’s lots of different sizes” – Kayla (after it had been broken up)

Today we noticed that all of the ice had melted.  Nathan B. said it was because it is warm in the nursery.

We were pleased to see that there was more ice outside for us to use again!

Hopefully we will be able to make our own ice soon!  Watch this space!!

Primary 2 love dinosaurs!

P2 were very excited to find out that our term 3 topic is dinosaurs! We wrote down all of the facts that we already knew about dinosaurs and then decided what we would like to find out about dinosaurs throughout the topic. We created a new dinosaur called Barney on the laptop and started to explore facts about dinosaurs in different parts of the world.

What did we learn this week?

Kiernan: ‘Dinosaurs run very fast’.

Niamh: ‘Some dinosaurs walk on 4 legs and some can walk on 2 legs’.

Tiegan: ‘Some dinosaurs have massive tails’.

Daniel T: ‘I learnt that a verb is a doing word’

Kieran: ‘I learnt to spell ‘ea’ words like ‘tea’, ‘pea’ and ‘scream’.

Maya: ‘I learnt that 5-2=3. Subtracting is fun.’

Leo: ‘I learnt that when you subtract you need to work out the difference between the two numbers’.

Well done to Matthew Watkins who is the P2 star of the week.

Well done to the class dojo champion Kieran Mackie.

Fairyland Fun!

P1b have had a very exciting week.  The class were shocked to find that a friendly dragon had visited the class and left a letter and some glittery footprints!  The dragon was asking if we could help him to rebuild fairyland as it has disappeared and the dragon was feeling very sad.

Luckily, the children were all very happy to help and they wrote back to the dragon to tell him.  After we read ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’, Charley suggested that we could begin turning the classroom into by Fairyland by building our own beanstalk.  The children worked with a partner to begin making the stalk and leaves and our beanstalk has been growing!  We still have a few more leaves to add but it is looking great already!

Our structured play area has been turned into Fairyland and the children have had great fun dressing up, completing fairytale jigsaws, making castles out of construction materials and counting and making patterns with Jack’s magic beans.

Today we had a think about what we think the friendly dragon looks like.  We discussed our ideas with a partner before we used our black pens to draw detailed pictures. Mrs Ferguson visited our classroom and said they looked fantastic.  Well done everyone.

I wonder what the dragon will be up to next week!  We’ll keep you posted!

Our Week

We made kilts with Mrs Hocknull on Monday and everybody is practising a Scottish poem for the schools Burns competition.

In  maths class we are doing measuring with rulers using cm mm and we have are starting to learn about castles which is our topic for this term.

In drug education, we have been thinking about what drugs are good for you and bad for you and we have made Scottish comic strips in writing.

P1a’s learning this week

We had a special visitor in the night to P1a’s classroom ….  A Friendly Dragon

He left us a note saying that Fairyland has disappeared and that he needs our help!

We wrote letters back saying how we were going to help him.

We have also been working hard on our subtraction within 5 and are getting super confident.

Miss Rodford’s writing group have been working hard at building and writing sentences.

Well dine P1a
