The children in the nursery have been learning about fairtrade by visiting Marks and Spencer to look for faritrade food, fairtrade snacks and a visit to local cafe for a special fairtrade snack.
P6 completed their second week of cricket training this week. We have been learning pick up and hold the bat correctly, how to throw the ball, how to bat and catch the ball properly. Next week we will be learning how to bowl. In our first week we also played a game called French cricket.
“At first I thought it would be very hard but it turned out to be very easy and fun.” Katie
“I like our coach, Ian because he teaches well and never makes anything complicated.” Sean B
“I like cricket because it is interesting and fun to play.” Kylie
We have also had some different teachers this week, Mrs Ferguson and Mrs Stewart. It was different having them to teach us but it was interesting, fun and enjoyable. We hope they enjoyed spending time in P6 with us too!
Today is the start of Fair-trade Fortnight so we are encouraging everyone to “GO BANANAS!” In fact, bananas were very rare during WWII as we have been finding out. We have been in groups and working independently on different rationing challenges including research about shopping for food during rationing, clothes rationing look books, rationing recipes and menus, Potato Pete and Dr Carrot (see our WWII wall soon to find out more about them!) and public information leaflets about rationing.
“At first when I heard we had to present out research in a PowerPoint, I thought it would tricky but it turned out to be easy.” Declan
“I enjoyed working with my group because it was really fun.” Abby
WWII RATIONING…
did you know?
This week we have been finding out about showed what we learned in group presentations in different ways: powerpoint, TV programme/ game show, fact file, model, poster and painting. Through these different things we found out about different Jewish festivals, Shabbat, synagogues, Jewish homes and the Torah which is the Jewish holy book. Sonny said, “I thought it was quite fun doing all the different ways to show what we’ve learned.” Nathan said, “It was easier working in a group because you can get lots more information.” Joshua enjoyed his role in the game show and the rest of the class particularly enjoyed this.
Leon really enjoyed division work with Miss Kennedy. He told us that it’s important to remember that you always start with the biggest digit and that division is just like multiplication backwards. Nathan liked working with protractors in angles work. Thomas said, “It was quite hard to start with because there are two lots of numbers on the inside and the outside and you need to try to make it that you know which ones to use. It got easier after a bit.”
In reading, we have been working on summarising. Jak said, “It was quite good because we were working with different people. At the end we got to design a task on what we read. It was quite fun cos we got to see what other people wanted to do.”
In health, we have been finding out about what we need to help us have a good night’s sleep. This week we learned about the body clock. There are two hormones that we have- melatonin and cortisol. Melatonin makes us feel sleepy and cortisol wakes us up. There is blue light in the sun and that is what makes us up because the light on our eyes tells us that it’s daytime. When the light goes, the receptors in our eyes tell us that it’s time to sleep. We are keeping a sleep diary. You shouldn’t play on your ipod, phone, tablet, tv or anything with a screen that has blue light because that tells your body that you should be awake so it makes it hard for you to sleep. Did you know that primary school children should get about 10 hours sleep every night???!!!
We have been carrying out a lot of research for our castles topic. This week we researched different parts of the castle and worked in groups to produce posters about what we have learned. We had to make sure that we make sure that everyone participated and supported each other with this task. It was important to listen to the ideas of everyone in the group and we all had different roles to perform. The posters are very informative and also have bright, colourful sketches too.
In maths we have started to look at time. We made our own analogue clocks, which we have been using for lots of fun time games and we have looked at o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to times. We know that there are 24 hours in a day and that we use am and pm to help us too.
The title of our imaginative writing task this week was A Princess in Peril and we had to make sure that it had a clear beginning, middle and end. Everyone worked hard to make sure that they included VCOP in their work.
Today we had a Fairtrade assembly about bananas. We learned about the journey of the banana from farms to stores and the important people who are involved in making this happen.

This week we have been working on time and have worked hard at reading and ordering the days of the week. We have retold the story of Hansel and Gretel thinking about the beginning, middle and end of the story. Our Cinderella display is taking longer than we thought but we are starting to see all of the pieces coming together!
Mackenzie has enjoyed looking at the story of Hansel and Gretel. Oskar realley liked paired reading with his buddy this week. Emma has enjoyed playing with her friends in the structured play area this week.
This week we have been learning a little more about the Ancient Egyptian practices for death. They believed that the soul went to the Afterlife and the body would meet it there so it needed preserved. They preserved the bodies using a process called mummification. This process involved removing internal organ and placing them into 4 special jars, called Canopic Jars. The body was then wrapped up in cloths to make the mummy. The final part in this process was to make a death mask originally these were made of wood. The rich kings’ ones were made out of gold.
Carlos: ‘I enjoyed designing my death mask.’
Brooke: ‘I enjoyed colouring in my death mask.’
Zoe: ‘I liked writing in my topic jotter about death masks.’
We also made Pharaoh head dresses, we were all Pharaoh’s for the afternoon!
Isabel: ‘I liked making my head dress.’
Ryan: ‘I enjoyed cutting out my head dress.’
Today we are wearing yellow for Fairtrade’s ‘Go Bananas’ Day. Isabel, Louise, Brooke and Samantha all appeared wearing the same top! So for today they look like quadruplets.
