Leadership Committees – Pupil Voice in Action
At Inverkip Primary School and Nursery Class, we believe every child should have opportunities to contribute, take responsibility and make a positive difference. Our Leadership Committees give children meaningful ways to share their ideas, work with others and take action across our school and wider Inverkip community.
Our committee structure has been designed to make leadership manageable, purposeful and appropriate for children’s ages and stages. Rather than having very wide age ranges within each group, pupils work within two leadership stages: Primary 1–3 and Primary 4–7, with our pre-school children beginning to experience the leadership journey alongside them.
Beginning Our Leadership Journey – Nursery
Leadership begins in our Nursery Class through everyday opportunities to make choices, share ideas, take responsibility and care for others and our environment.
Throughout the year, a small number of our pre-school children will also have opportunities to join our Primary 1–3 Leadership Committees. Children will rotate across the Community Champions, Rights Ambassadors and Eco Champions, allowing different children to experience committee life, work alongside older pupils and contribute to real projects.
This flexible approach means nursery children can begin to experience pupil leadership without having a formal nursery committee. It also supports transition by helping our pre-school children build relationships with pupils and staff across the school and become increasingly familiar with being part of the wider Inverkip community.
Building the Foundations of Leadership – Primary 1 to Primary 3
Our Primary 1-3 pupils, joined at different points by small groups of pre-school children, begin by discovering that their ideas and actions can make a difference.
Children can become
- Community Champions
- Rights Ambassadors or
- Eco Champions.
Community Champions focus on kindness and connections with the wider Inverkip community. Their projects include supporting Compassionate Inverclyde’s Back Home Boxes through our Christmas Kindness collection and bringing local partners together through an Inverkip Community Café.
Rights Ambassadors help keep children’s rights visible across school life and take their work beyond the school gates. They explore how children’s rights connect to familiar places around Inverkip and help create child-friendly rights messages for locations across our village.
Eco Champions help our younger pupils understand how everyday choices can protect our planet. Through practical and achievable projects, they encourage our school community to reduce waste, care for our environment and make more sustainable choices.
At this stage, leadership is about helping children recognise that their voice matters and that even small actions can make a difference.
Growing as Leaders – Primary 4 to Primary 7
As children progress through the school, leadership opportunities broaden and pupils take increasing responsibility for planning, decision-making and leading change.
Our Primary 4 -7 pupils can become:
- Digital Leaders
- Equalities Champions
- Reading Ambassadors
- Numeracy Leaders
- Growing Leaders or
- KIP Change Makers.
Digital Leaders promote safe, confident and responsible use of technology. Their work includes helping others develop digital skills and sharing online safety and cyber-security learning with families.
Equalities Champions celebrate diversity, challenge stereotypes and help ensure everyone in our school community feels valued, represented and that they belong.
Reading Ambassadors promote reading for pleasure across the school. Their projects include developing pupil book clubs and creating a community book honesty box where books can be shared and enjoyed by families.
Numeracy Leaders help make maths visible, enjoyable and relevant across school life, encouraging children to see that numeracy is all around us.
Growing Leaders take practical responsibility for helping care for and improve our school grounds. Building on our existing partnership with Blooming Inverkip, they will garden, plant and weed within our grounds and encourage other classes to get involved through class growing challenges and plants to nurture.
KIP Change Makers work alongside our Depute Head Teacher to gather pupil views, identify areas for improvement and help turn children’s ideas into positive changes across our school.
Small Actions – Meaningful Impact
Our Leadership Committees meet for approximately one hour every fortnight. We deliberately focus on a small number of achievable and meaningful projects rather than trying to complete a new activity at every meeting.
Each committee has an annual action plan to provide staff and pupils with a starting point, but this is a scaffold rather than a checklist. Projects may take several meetings, plans can change and children’s ideas should help shape what happens next.
We want children to experience the whole process of leadership: having an idea, listening to others, making decisions, working together, taking action and seeing what difference their work has made.
The KIP Leadership Framework
All of our committees use our simple KIP approach to help turn ideas into action:
- Knowledge – What have we learned?
- Involvement – How have we contributed?
- Progress – What difference have we made?
This helps children understand that leadership isn’t simply about holding a title, wearing a badge or taking part in an activity. It is about understanding why something matters, contributing to meaningful action and recognising the impact we can have.
Leadership Beyond the School Gates
Wherever possible, our committees connect their work with real people, places and organisations within Inverkip and beyond.
This might mean supporting a local charity, working with community partners, improving our school grounds, sharing learning with families, promoting children’s rights around our village or taking action in response to something our children care about.
These authentic experiences help children understand that they are not simply pupils within a school – they are active members of a community and can make a positive contribution to it.
Bringing Our ROAR Values to Life
Our Leadership Committees provide another important way of bringing our ROAR values to life.
Children learn to lead with Respect, approach possibilities with Optimism, show Ambition for what they can achieve and develop the Resilience to keep going when change takes time.
From a pre-school child attending their first committee meeting to a Primary 7 pupil helping lead a whole-school improvement, our aim is to develop confident, responsible and compassionate young people who understand that their voices and actions matter.
Together, we learn. Together, we lead. Together, we make Inverkip even better than we found it.
