Successful Learners – Literacy and Managing Risk

With it being Fireworks Night this week, the Transition literacy work and risk identification focused on firework safety. They boys were Successful Learners listening to a fireworks story and helping to identify and solve risks shown. To further test the boys’ risk management we had a stand up – sit down quiz on fireworks safety. They boys showed that they are mature young men who understand how to have fun on fireworks night but also keep themselves and others safe.

IDL – Tending to the Garden

The Transition class took time this week to tend to their winter vegetables. The boys were Responsible Citizens when they tidied loose pots and small plants for the winter. They boys removed the fleece that had been moved by the wind from their vegetables and weeded the plot. They then replaced the fleece and secured it from the wind.

Effective Contributors – Music, Changing Tempo

In our music class this week the boys looked at changing tempo. The were Effective Contributors  when they all worked together, tapping out the  beat of Nellie the Elephant. The boys used their numeracy skills to recognise and  say when the song was fast or slow. We also compared different songs and discussed which was faster or slower. The boys were so good that they didn’t fall for the trick where two different songs of the same tempo were played with paced dancers. The class tapped out the same tempo each time.

Confident Individuals/Effective Contributors

The Snowdrops have enjoyed some firework themed activities this week. We made chocolate finger sparklers (yum), Skittles colour wheels, firework pictures using different materials to help us create firework shapes, tinfoil sparklers and a sensory light session which included watching a cbeebies firework show set to music – we twirled and waved our colourful streamers as the fireworks popped and whizzed!

50 Things in the Outdoors – Making a Scarecrow

This Transition class were Effective Contributors when they all worked together to make a scarecrow for our raised bed. The boys helped spread out the plastic sheet to hold the hay and then took turns stuffing the scarecrow. Unfortunately the pumpkin head was just too heavy so a decorated hay stuffed bag had to be the replacement.

Firework Picture Fun

We have all had a great week in the Sungazers Class.  We have been learning about firework safety and enjoyed reading a story called ‘Sparks in the Sky’.    We even made our own firework pictures in class using different painting skills.  Plastic forks, flicking paint from a brush and glitter helped us to create wonderful pictures.  We all had good messy fun!
