Oban High School Senior Boys A Team and Junior Girls took the top title in the Argyll & Bute Basketball Tournament held at Atlantic Leisure Centre on Thursday 12 December. Mrs Sharp, the Junior Girls’ and Boys’ team coach, was delighted with the teams’ win. “They have worked really hard to get to the top of their game and this win represents their high level of dedication and skill at basketball.” She added that she is confident the teams will continue to excel at the sport.

Philosophy News from Oban High School
Pupils from Oban High School’s Philosophy Club appeared at the town’s sheriff court yesterday. But thankfully the bright young things were only staging a mock trial, as they looked deeper into their studies on right and wrong.
The trial was fictitious, but was based on real Scottish law.
The case was of a woman accused of driving dangerously by knocking down a high school pupil and breaking both her legs.
‘Frantic Assembly’ at Oban High
On 19th November, Higher Drama pupils from Oban High School were given a fantastic opportunity to take part in a full-day workshop with world-renowned physical theatre company, Frantic Assembly. Led by Krista Vuori, a Frantic Assembly director, the pupils learned how to use physical devising techniques to create scenes that were emotionally deep and aesthetically beautiful. Wiz Kids from Oban High Take on the Lit Quiz
Nine learners from Oban High School participated in the UK division of the global Kids Lit Quiz at Kilsyth Academy on 12th November. The Wiz Kids came 15th and 23rd in a field of 39 competitors.

Oban High School Pupils and Staff Raise £2221.89 for Children in Need
It took loads of careful planning and strategic coordination but the learners and staff at Oban High School raised £2221.89 in just two periods’ time to contribute to Children in Need.
The Haunted House proved once again the most popular event of the afternoon. It was so scary that two pairs of pupils found the “tunnel of darkness” too much to complete! There were no refunds on tickets though as every penny went for this worthy cause. Witches and onesies were the fashion of the day.

GIRFEC National Competition Winner is Oban High School S4 Student Niamh Macauley
Oban High School S5 pupil Niamh Macauley’s beautifully drawn poster was the winning entry from among hundreds of submissions in the national GIRFEC student competition. Sponsored by the Scottish government’s programme known as Getting It Right For Every Child, the topic for the design competition was “What does well being mean to you?”

Oban High Trad School of Music Winners!
Oban High School Traditional School of Music and Amy Boyce (S5) were successful at the Opportunity Knocks Oban Live Auditions on Saturday to win a place on the big stage at the Oban Hogmanay Street Party. There were 10 acts which were then whittled down to four and those four acts performed once more for the judges who chose our two Oban High School acts. Amy is a singing pupil of Jean Gillies, local singing teacher and the Musical Director of the Traditional School of Music is Sileas Sinclair. This marks another great accomplishment for this talented group of young people at Oban High.

Scots author Alan Bissett visited most of our secondary schools recently, delivering readings and hosting workshops.
The author of Boyracers, Pack Men, Death of a Ladies’ Man and The Incredible Adam Spark, who was brought up in Falkirk, spoke to S3-S6 pupils about what had inspired him to write his books. Alan, born in 1975, had his first novel published in 2001, and has also written two solo plays, a one-woman show and a short documentary, as well as numerous projects in collaboration with other artists. Interplanetary Pioneer – Fergus Glen-Lee
Fergus Glen-Lee from Oban High School has been invited to join Fuselab at Edinburgh University to plan life for future civilizations in the event of an evacuation of Earth.
Fergus saw the avert on SAL for the opportunity for young Scots to join the team made up of business and academia from North West European Communities. Fergus had to demonstrate his creative and divergent thinking to get through the selection process and has been chosen to spend a week at Edinburgh University.

GROWING OUR OWN AT OHS SUPPORT DEPARTMENT!
In October 2012 we took charge of a supersized poly tunnel which was erected in the grounds of Glencruitten Hostel. This was the first step in our plan to grow and sell produce to parents, staff and the hostel kitchen! In our Tech classes we have made six raised beds for the tunnel and plan to make more for outside. We have planted potatoes, onions, herbs and blackcurrants so far and have also been improving the hostel grounds by planting hedges and trees!

Oban High Pupils Rock Sell Out Crowds!
Last week, a cast of over 40 pupils from Oban High School wowed audiences at the Corran Halls for four nights with their production of We Will Rock You. The musical, written by Queen and Ben Elton celebrates the hits of the eponymous rock band through a futuristic comedy tale.

National Shinty Festival – Aviemore, April 2013
Oban has been represented at the annual Aviemore National Shinty Festival every season since its modest beginning over 11 years ago.

Red Nose Day at Oban High School

More than 600 of the three varieties of the 2013 Red Nose Day noses were sold for £1 each at Oban High School for Comic Relief. Students and staff raised £1,063.68 to contribute to the international global assistance agency through a variety of activities including open mic performances in costume; face painting stalls and cake bakes. Lorn Mathsfest 2013
On the 12th February the Annual Lorn Mathsfest was held in Oban High School. Forty-eight S1 pupils were joined by forty-eight P7 pupils from the associated Primary Schools. The pupils worked in teams of four. To be successful team work was as important as mathematical ability. The Assembly Hall was a hive of activity as the pupils attempted to solve maths problems and puzzles throughout the day, one of which was in French or one in Gaelic!

New SCIAF Gaelic Resources launched in Oban High School
A new set of five, 4-colour posters aimed at encouraging young people to become active global citizens have been produced in Gaelic by SCIAF and will be distributed to schools across Scotland where Gaelic is used and taught. SCIAF and Rosemary Ward from the Gaelic Books Council presented to Gaelic fluent pupils and Gaelic senior pupils on Monday 14th January. Help for Higher Students at Oban High
Oban High School’s Maths and English Departments recently held a joint information evening entitled, ‘How to Help Your Child Pass Higher Maths and English.’ The focus of the evening was to give parents helpful strategies and advice to enable them to support their children through the challenges of these very demanding courses. Information on course outlines, deadlines and content was also discussed and parents were issued with helpful booklets and shown useful websites. In addition, current S6 students spoke about the importance of good study skills and being organised from the beginning of the year.
SD5 Fitness Club, Oban High School
As part of their Personal Development Award a group of students from Oban high School have formed a Fitness Club and have been participating in different aspects of Outdoor Education since returning from their holidays.
The group have been working with Stramash and have experienced Canoeing in a local Loch and Coasteering at Ganavan Sands. For many of the group this was very challenging and was fantastic to see them all joining in and coming out of their comfort zones!
