The P1 children were so excited to welcome Grannies and Grandas to their classrooms for a wonderful Tea Party this afternoon as part of their ‘Katie Morag’ topic.
Over 50 Grandparents were treated to some fabulous singing of well known Scottish Songs, including Ally Bally, Katie Bairdie and Ma Maw’s a Millionaire.
Barcaldine Primary School’s interdisciplinary topic for this term is The Victorians.
After all our research into the Victorian era it seemed a good idea to go long to visit the Victorian School in Scotland Street, Glasgow. The children got a chance to walk around the museum and see where the children went to class, where they played and even noticed the outside loo – thank goodness we had modern ones inside the museum! In Spring 2012, Small Isles children became involved in the Crofting Connections Project. During the summer term they invited the community to be involved too by hosting four Crofting Community Cafes in school. Each cafe had a crofting theme (Crofting the land, Life as a child, Crofting Culture and Crofting at Home) and a panel of ‘experts’ from the community were invited to come and share their memories and experiences of the theme by answering questions from the children, leading discussions and having drinks and home-cooked treats.

Pupils of Lochgilphead High School Princes Trust 4xl group held a ‘show and tell ‘day for 40 pupils of primary 1 as part of their WW 1 project. The group spent months researching into their specific topic and as much time perfecting their timings and the best activity to entertain the children. Ashley spoke all about the airplanes of WW1 and had three Lego models on show and lots of colouring sheets for the children to show off their artistic talents. Gaelic unit P6/7 from Sandbank Primary (Bunsgoil Thaigh a’Chladaich) were learning about the history of the Holy Loch area over the past two hundred years. The work was organised by Fiona Lochhead from Kilmun Mausoleum who arranged for a weaver called Fiona MacDougall and a heritage worker called Robin Patel to come in and work with us.
We got a lot of information from the gravestones at Kilmun, including occupations, infant mortality and the gristly work of resurrectionists. Continue reading Sandbank’s Great Exhibition
Pupils from Lochgilphead High School Princes Trust 3xl group spent 3 days in Edinburgh as part of their photography project. They stayed at the wonderfully equipped Forth Lodge based in Bonaly outdoor centre. The group visited the Camera Obscura to learn about different aspects of imagery, textures and optical illusions. There were 5 floors full of new and exciting interactive fun. Pupils and staff at Strath of Appin dressed in their pyjamas and brought in bedtime stories and cuddly toys to celebrate World Book Day. The classroom had a specially created ‘reading den’ and pupils brought in sleeping bags, cushions, pillows and beanbags. The day was filled with book-themed activities and quiet reading time. The pupils from Barcaldine Primary School were invited to attend the ‘Raising Attainment’ Conference on Monday 10th March 2014. The very enthusiastic class were delighted to have been asked to display the work they have been doing with their iPads in the classroom and how technology has become part of every lesson they have. The pupils were asked lots of questions by the visitors to their stall and they were able to answer very confidently and clearly. Maggie Irving held a workshop and the pupils were delighted to have been asked to assist her. They showed a number of people who attended the workshop how they could use iPads to promote literacy learning and how much they enjoy learning in this way.
Glassary Primary samba drumming performance by P4-6
At our Samba drumming with Steven MacNally, we learned different rhythms. My one was look high look high LOOK HIGH! There were four different instruments. We used Kashishi, Agogo bells tambourim and Sourdo. On Wednesday the 26th February 2014 we performed in front of our friends, family, and the younger class. Thank you Steven, we had so much fun.

Dunoon Grammar School’s team of four mathematicians from S1 and S2 won 12th place in the UKMT Team Challenge held at the University of the West of Scotland. The team enjoyed competing against 28 other teams from the west of Scotland region. The challenge consisted of four rounds including a cross-number, maths shuttle and an intense relay race. Congratulations to Hazel Oxland, Willow Grieve, Conor Adams and Katie Lambert for an excellent result against some very fierce competition. “Primary 1 children in Castlehill invited Campbeltown Nursery to join them for a “Happy Healthy Me” morning.
Everyone had taster sessions in Yoga Bugs, Mini Kickers and Keep Fit. Louise, the school nurse, also spoke to the children about keeping their hearts healthy. A fruit kebab healthy snack was enjoyed by all.”

‘Scent-Citizens’, run by P4/5 in Port Ellen Primary, is to receive an award from the Social Enterprise Academy. The children in P4/5 have been working diligently over the last few months to set up and manage their own social enterprise business producing soaps and bath bombs. They have been involved in writing their own business plan, creating a company name and logo, designing order forms, invoices and customer feedback froms, making orders for resources, producing soaps and bathbombs, packaging, sales, book keeping and delivery. Dalintober Primary pupils are enjoying their new skills based programme, called ‘Options’, which has been running every Friday since January. Pupils have ‘opted in’ to one of four areas – Healthy Heroes (Health & Wellbeing), Eco Warriors (Sustainable Education), Techno Whizzes (Technologies) and Smarty Arties (Expressive Arts) – which represent the wide variety of interests and wider achievements of the pupils themselves. Some of Dunoon Grammar School’s senior learning centre pupils were delighted to invite local entrepreneurs in to school to talk about their experiences as business people. The pupils are undertaking an ASDAN short course in Enterprise. ASDAN offer a range of certificates and qualifications that allow pupils to work at their own pace and own level, making them ideal for many learning centre pupils. The Enterprise short course, which will take 60 hours to complete, provides opportunities for pupils to develop entrepreneurial knowledge and skills, and how to use these effectively. The children (and teachers) at Kirn Primary were missing on World Book Day! Instead, the school was filled with Little Red Riding Hood, The Big Bad Wolf, Cruella de Ville (and a dalmatian), The Cat in the Hat, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Wally, Nanny McPhee, even Willy Wonka and an Oompah Loompah! Dunoon Primary’s magnicifent Sal Team attended the ‘Raising Attainment’ Conference in Oban on Tuesday 11 March 2014. The enthusiastic pupils were thrilled to be asked to have a stall displaying their IT skills in Raspberry Pi, Lego We Do and EV3. Their stall was very busy and the pupils displayed very confident clear answers to any questions asked by the visitors. Gary Clark held a workshop and the pupils were delighted to be invited to assist him. The audience asked them lots of questions and they explained the various aspects of the software and how they enjoyed using it. Primary five at Dalintober Primary School worked with Kilmartin Museum on a very exciting bird project. First the children, accompanied by Julia Hamilton and Kate Moody form Kilmartin Museum, examined stuffed birds and then they walked round the harbour in Campbeltown to see the real thing. They also visited Campbeltown Museum to see where an exhibition of their work would be. Our pupils in Early Level have been getting ready for spring by making an extremely scary scarecrow. They had fun deciding what he should wear, bringing in a choice of old (and not so old) clothes, from home. Tasteful no, effective yes!
At the moment he is in the entrance, greeting visitors with his scary smile. Once the seeds have been planted he will be moved into the garden.

At Bowmore Primary School, we have been working hard on our amazing garden project. It was admired by Mr Don McAllister and he invited us to attend this conference. All the head teachers of Argyll and Bute were going to be there – we were very excited. We had to get up in time for the 7:00am on Monday 10th March to catch the ferry to Kennacraig.
