Book Week Update

We have been having a fantastic week this week, celebrating book week.

We have been engaging in lots of activities all week, and still have plenty to go.

This week we have been enjoying lots of paired reading (reading to others in the school). Primary 1 particularly enjoyed the primary 7 boys and girls reading to them.

Primary 4-7 have been going on a ‘Cluedo Quest’. Someone stole all the books from Mrs Brown’s office! They have been answering clues, leading them all around the school, to help them work out who did it!

We have been receiving some amazingly creative photos for our Extreme Reading competition. They are all on display in the gym hall. We have had children reading whilst hula hooping; upside down; in the dogs bed; on the moon; standing on top of a giant peach; on a horse; in a tree and many more!

Our teachers have been challenging us this week as well. There is a display in the gym hall, with lots of teachers hiding behind their favourite books. It is really tricky to work out who is who!

We have all been working as a class to create an imaginative display based on a favourite book, or a number of favourite books.  We can’t wait to see which class wins this competition on Friday.

We still have many more activities to do as well!

Tomorrow (Thursday) we are participating in a book swap in the classes. Every child has been asked to bring in a book they no longer want, or read, and it will be swapped with someone else, meaning we all go home with a new book to enjoy.

Also tomorrow our teachers are all swapping classes to read a story to another class.

But the thing we are most looking forward to is the chance to dress up as our favourite book character on Friday (Nursery is on Thursday)! We have been discussing costumes all week. There is a prize for the most imaginative costume from each year group.

Keep checking back for more updates!

Primary 1 & 2’s Library Visit

Today, primary 1 and 2 had a fantastic afternoon. We visited the local library. We met the author and the lead character of the children’s books Badger The Mystical Mutt.

Badger is a large black and white dog, who loves toast, and is awfully cheeky! He is also very good at magic. We watched him perform a number of magic tricks, in between annoying Laura, the author.

We also listened to a short extract from the first book.

It really was a brilliant afternoon. Thank you so much to the library and to Laura and Badger.

Primary 1 Book Week

Primary 1 have been having a fantastic week this week. We have been celebrating books in all sorts of ways!

We have had our primary 7 buddies come to read to us twice this week! We loved listening to their stories, and even read them some stories too.

We have each designed / coloured a bookmark, which Mrs Baty says she’s going to laminate for us to keep.

We have read lots of new books and our favourite books every day this week.

We chose our favourite class book (The Selfish Crocodile) and have been designing a display on our door. It is looking so good. Fingers crossed we win the competition on Friday.

We got together to write the first page of a whole school story. We began it by introducing Mr Zebra, who was getting ready for his own birthday party with Mr Tiger and Mrs Hippo. He wore a blue and red sparkly party hat, and his party t’shirt. But on his way to the party … he fell into a puddle! We can’t wait to hear how it ends.

Today we went with the primary 2’s, to the library. We saw a short performance about Badger The Mystical Mutt. He was a very cheeky dog!

We have also been looking at some of the amazing ‘Extreme Reading’ photos. We are so creative.

We are really looking forward to the rest of the week. Tomorrow we are going to have a story from a different teacher; we have our book swap; and we can’t wait for our Dress Up Day on Friday.

Primary 1b’s Edinburgh Castle Trip

Primary 1b had a fantastic time at Edinburgh Castle (please forgive the delay of this post!!!)

We arrived at the Royal Mile, and were so excited walking up the hill, to catch our first glimpse of the castle.

It was so much bigger than we expected! And luckily the weather stayed clear for us.

We visited The Crown Jewels (very pretty); The Great Hall (have you seen the size of some of those swords??? And we found the key to the entire castle); we had lunch in the dungeons; we saw Mon’s Meg (the biggest ever canon … it was huge!!) and we heard (and viewed) the one o’clock gun (it was awfully loud … it gave us such a scare).

We had a brilliant day …. and most of us fell asleep on the bus home.

St Nicholas Book Week

Our ‘Book Week’ got off to a super start today with the boys and girls engaging in lots of great actvitiies including :

Whole school story – P1 started off our whole school story.  After a super discussion and a vote we agreed that the main characters in our story should be animals.  We used our imaginations to start off the story before we passed it over to the boys and girls in P2 who then wrote their part.  The story will visit all of the classes throughout the week with each stage adding their part.  We cannot wait to hear what happens next.

Paired reading – Primary 7 visited the boys and girls in P1 and read stories to them.  The P1’s loved being read to from their special visitors.

P7 went investigating around the school reading clues and looking for pictures of very famous book characters when they played ‘Cluedo’.  They had super fun looking for the culprit who stole Mrs Brown’s books.  I wonder who it was ? All will be revealed soon.P4, P5 and P6 will play this game too throughout the week.

Log in tomorrow for some more news about ‘Book Week’.

Chinese New Year Celebrations in P1.

DSCF5829

‘Gong Hey Fat Choy’ to all of our Chinese friends and family !

Today,  the boys and girls in Primary 1 learnt all about the Chinese New Year. Why ? Well, today is the Chinese New Year.

What did we learn ?

We found out that the Chinese New Year is a very special time but it wasn’t always like that.We learnt about the legend of the Chinese New Year.  We learnt that long ago a monster called Nian appeared in a village in China and scared all of the villagers. A wise old man came up with a plan to scare away the monster.  He said that the villagers should wear clothes with red, gold and orange.  He also said that the monster was scared of loud noises and fire, so the villagers banged their drums loudly and lit fire crackers.  When the villagers did this, the monster ran away.

Chinese New Year is a time when families get together to celebrate. In the days coming up to New Year every family buys presents, decorations, food, new clothes and people have their hair cut. Houses are cleaned from top to bottom. The aim is to sweep out any bad luck from the old year and clear the way for good luck. However, it is bad luck to clean on New Years Day itself.

Families put lights up outside their homes, rather like Christmas lights. Doors and windows are often newly painted in red. On New Years Eve both narrow strips of red paper, called Chunlian or Spring Couplets, and bunches of firecracker decorations are hung on doors to bring good luck.

Chinese New Year celebrations last for 15 days.  In the first three days of Chinese New Year celebrations, people living outside cities can light firecrackers which are similar to rows of fireworks, but which make a series of loud bangs. The idea is that the bangs scare away bad luck. People hang bunches of decorative firecrackers both inside and outside their homes for the same reason.

The colour red is used to decorate for two reasons. The first is because red is a lucky colour and the second because it is supposed to frighten off the monster Nian who is thought to come on New Years Eve. Families also decorate their homes with lanterns and put stickers on things in their homes.

We had lots of fun in the afternoon to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

What did we do ?

We learnt how to count to 10 in Chinese.

We made a part of a dragon.  (Once these are dry we will join them together to make a huge dragon).

We tasted lots of Chinese foods and drinks including : Sweet and sour vegetable wantons, prawn crackers, spring rolls, tangerines and lychee juice.

We made Chinese lanterns.

We looked at Chinese images and coloured them in.

We looked at Chinese numbers and copied these.

It was a fantastic afternoon, full of super learning and fun.  Well done everyone !

Magnificent Maths in Primary 1b

Primary 1b have been having great fun with their numbers over the last couple of weeks. We particularly enjoyed working in teams to create numbers using our bodies. We had a team leader, who had to organise the rest of the team, and the team had to listen to them (we found it a bit tricky not to try to take over sometimes). We were proud of our hard work though.

active numbers

We have been working very hard with our addition. We have been using lots of objects to help us, and have been learning number bonds up to 5 as well. We are so clever!!

addition collage 1 addition collage 2

This week we have also been learning about money. We have been learning to recognise coins, and to use coins to make amounts to help us buy objects in the class shop.

We loved looking at the old coins Lucas brought in. There were coins which were over 100 years old!!! There used to be a 3p coin! We think that would be helpful now! Thank you for showing them to us Lucas.

Super Scotland in Primary 1

Primary 1 have been so busy these last few weeks! We have been really enjoying our Scotland topic.

Last Monday we celebrated Burns Night in the class. Primary 1 a and b got together to learn who Robert Burns was, why he is famous, and how we celebrate him. We had our own Burns Supper in the class. We tried oatcakes, shortbread and irn bru. I think you can tell by our faces that we particularly liked the irn bru. Who knew drinks could be such a bright colour?!

burns day collage

We have been enjoying our Edinburgh Castle themed classroom. We really enjoy pretending to be princesses and knights living in the castle. We have also been building our own castles in the construction area.

Hamish McHaggis is our new class friend. He lives in Corrie Doon, which is in the Highlands of Scotland. He is a haggis, who enjoys travelling around Scotland. He even has his own stories about his adventures! He is in our class to teach us all about Scotland. So far we have learned about Edinburgh, Inverness, Loch Ness and Glasgow.

We have been taking him home for sleepovers. He really enjoys learning what Scottish children enjoy doing, and has had fun going on walks in the Scottish countryside, watching TV, and helping to read bedtime stories.

Rudey’s last post of 2015

DSCF0209

Primaries 2 and 2/1 were very excited by Rudey’s message this morning.  He has rewarded us for all of our good behaviour and hard work with a popcorn and movie afternoon.  This will be a lovely way to spend our final day with Rudey!  He has really enjoyed visiting our classrooms this year and will be heading back to The North Pole to make the final preparations for Christmas.  Goodbye Rudey, we will miss you!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Love from Primary 2 and Primary 2/1

Primary 1 Christmas Craft Afternoon

On Tuesday afternoon primary 1 had a lovely Christmas craft afternoon. We invited our parents / carers / grandparents to come along to help us. We also had some primary 7’s come along.

We made lots of lovely things, such as a paper chain Christmas tree; reindeer food (to make sure they land on our gardens on Christmas eve); hot chocolate rudolphs. We also played games, read Christmas stories and did some Christmas worksheets.

Thank you to everyone who came along. It really was a fantastic afternoon.

We were all wearing our beautiful party clothes, and were so excited all day!

We played lots of games and won lots of prizes for musical statues, pass the parcel and best dancers, but our favourite was musical bumps.

We even had a visit from SANTA!!!! He gave us all a present!

Let’s take a selfie!

104_0923

This morning Primaries 2 and 2/1 were confused when they entered their classrooms as there was no sign of Rudey!  They were worried that he had gone back to The North Pole early.  However, Mrs Leonard came in with some interesting news!  She asked us to come down to the photocopying room to investigate.  On the walls were selfies of the two Rudey’s which they had taken using the photocopier over the weekend.  They also left us a note saying they were bored without us.  Mrs Brown also came to investigate and said that we should keep the photographs as evidence of their naughty behaviour to show Santa.

Arran H – I was very shocked when Rudey wasn’t in our classroom.

Finlay F – I was amazed to see that Rudey had used the photocopier.

Matthew M – I was a bit sad to see that Rudey wasn’t there.

Zach – I think that Rudey should go home with us over the weekend to show him how to behave properly.

We hope that Rudey’s behaviour will be better tomorrow!

Primary 1a’s ‘Star of the Week’ and ‘Dojo Champion’.

Well done to Cole for being our ‘Star of the Week’.  Cole has worked hard all week and been a super helpful boy around class.

This week’s ‘Dojo Champion’ is the whole class !!  I am so proud of how well you all did performing our Nativity before three different audiences.  A special treat is coming your way on Monday.  Have a lovely weekend boys and girls !

Rudey reads the Nativity Story

DSCF0200

Today, Primaries 2 and 2/1 had another surprise. They came into their classroom to discover Rudey reading the Nativity Story to the teddy bears and dolls!

He left us a letter asking us to teach him more about this story.

Zach- It was a little bit like when the teacher reads the story and we have milk.

Cerys- I want to teach Rudey that Christmas isn’t about getting presents, it is about Jesus’ birthday.

Connor G- Rudey needs to be taught that Christmas isn’t just about Santa, it is about the day Jesus was born in a barn!

The children are going to learn as much as they can about the Nativity story and teach Rudey the true meaning of Chrismas.

Double Trouble!

On Thursday, Primaries 2 and 2/1 made snowflakes, snowmen and robins to cheer Rudey up. He was very pleased and rewarded us with 10 minutes extra Golden Time!

Today we were shocked to find both Rudeys had been up to mischief! Mrs Dymock’s Rudey was holding a letter and Mrs Gibson’s Rudey was lying in the snow!

DSCF0198 DSCF0199

This is what they said:

Dear Primaries 2 and 2/1,

What a boring weekend we have had! We have been so lonely in your classrooms without you all! Luckily, we found each other and managed to get up to a little bit of mischief! Don’t you just love the snow?!

Love from

The Two Rudeys xxxx

Zach- They had a snowball fight as well!

Fallon- They made snow angels.

Aaron Mc- I was a bit shocked to find them lying in the snow.

Baillie- I was shocked and happy they found each other.

P1’s Elves Antics !

Well, it became a lot clearer today as to why two elves suddenly appeared in our classes the other day.  Santa needs our help !  He left us a letter explaining what it is he wants us to do. It turns out that the two little elves are still learning how to be good and so Santa has sent them to our classes so that we can teach them all about good manners, team work, good listening,  how to share and how to be helpful.

We are going to try extra harder over the next few weeks to display these super behaviours in the hope that the two little elves will learn too.   We have a lot of work to do though when it comes to these elves!

Our classes were a right old mess on Thursday as the elves thought it would be funny to have a snowball fight. Oopsy !  On Friday, they had decided to make snow angels.  More mess !  It looks as though we have our hands full.  Watch this space for more elf updates.DSCF5713 DSCF5714

Rudey strikes again!

DSCF0196104_0917Primaries 2 & 2/1 were very excited to see what antics Rudey had been up to during the night.  They were shocked to find Rudey hanging from our ceiling! He had also sneaked onto our teacher’s computer to type us a letter.  This is what he said:

Dear P2 / P2/1,

I am sad to see that there are no sparkly snowflakes in your classroom.  I thought that you would have enjoyed your treat yesterday!  I am feeling a bit sad and missing home so I need you to make your classroom look more like The North Pole.  I am not moving from here until I start to feel more at home!

Love,

Rudey x

So we have decided to have a busy afternoon making glittery snowflakes, snowmen and robins.  We hope that Rudey will start to feel more at home and will come down soon! DSCF0197

Primaries 2 and 2/1 get a special visitor!

Primaries 2 and 2/1 had a very special visitor from the North Pole! He is called Rudey and he is one of Santa’s elves. Santa wrote us a letter explaining that Rudey needs help. He is a very naughty elf and he needs to learn some good behaviour from the boys and girls.

On the 1st of December, Rudey left a terrible mess in our classrooms! We had to teach Rudey how to tidy up properly. We also made our own paper elves and painted a huge elf for our classroom doors.

On the 2nd of December, Rudey was very nice. He left us scissors, paper and glitter. He has written a letter thanking us for making him feel welcome and has rewarded us with craft materials to make snowflakes!

Justin- He is very cheeky!

Ciaran- He is magic.

Daniel- He is naughty.

Matthew M- He is kind and a little naughty sometimes.

Connor- I felt excited.

Anna- He is not tidying up properly.

Neve W- I was shocked!

Primaries 2 and 2/1 are delighted to show you what they have been busy making to sell at the Christmas Fair.  We have made Good Luck Calendars which will be £1 and some Snowmen decorations which will cost £2.50.

We have really enjoyed making these!

If you are a parent in P2 or P2/1 and are unable to attend the Christmas Fair, you may send an envelope with money inside clearly stating what you wish to buy before Thursday 3rd December.

Many thanks!

Hallowe’en Fun in P1a.

Happy Hallowe’en everyone !

The boys and girls had a great day today doing all things spooky (not too spooky, Mrs Macdonald is a scaredy cat !).  Some of us made skeletons, some of us practiced our good colouring in skills on our Hallowe’en pictures.   We also played with dough and used spooky cutters to make shapes.  Our story was SPOOKTACULAR ! It was very funny as it was about a smelly ghost.    Our teacher hardly reecognised us all as we had all come to school dressed up. Mrs Macdonald said that our costumes were fantastic ! As a treat we have all been given an apple to use for dooking tomorrow and some sweeties.

Here we are having fun !

Some of us brought in certificates as we had raised money for charity, well done.  We also saw a trophy for good ball skills, and certiciates for moving up a level in tae-kwon do.  Well done everyone ! You have all worked very hard and we are all proud of you.

Happy holidays !

Mrs Macdonald and Mrs Baty.

Friendship Spot

Mrs Hesketh has very kindly been busy making a new friendship spot for our playgrounds.

This lovely sign is already up in the infant playground and will soon be introduced into the other playgrounds too.

Children whose friends are off school, or are still eating lunch, can go to the spot, and can find new people to play with.

The primary 1’s have particularly loved this. They have all been keen to share stories of finding new friends or playing with someone who didn’t have anyone.

We are looking forward to hearing many more lovely stories.

Yucky Germs in Primary 1b

Primary 1b have been learning all about hand washing, and why this is important.

We watched a video showing germs on our hands. They are so small, that we can’t see them, but apparently they can be spread really easily. We weren’t sure if we believed this or not.

So, we decided to play with glitter! The glitter is the pretend germs (just a bit bigger so we can see them). We went around the classroom, touching everything. They spread so easily! The classroom ended up covered in germs!

When we tried to wash them off, it was quite hard, we had to use soap to help make sure our hands were very clean.

Primary 1b’s Stain Glass Windows

This week Primary 1b have been learning about churches. Our favourite part of churches are the beautiful stain glass windows. They are so colourful!

We decided to make our own to decorate our classroom. We drew a huge squiggle with a pencil on the tracing paper, and then coloured in each section with a different colour, using felt tips. We are very impressed with them.

Primary 1b’s wonderful workers!

Primary 1b have been so busy this week!

We have been working really hard to count and write our numbers perfectly. We have also been ordering numbers forwards and backwards, working out missing numbers and even building our own numberline (with people holding numbers).

We have been working just as hard with our sounds as well. This week we have been focusing on finding the initial sound or the middle sound in a word, as well as building words of our very own. We will be reading and writing entire stories before you know it!

Wednesday’s World in P1.

For today’s ‘Wednesday’s World’ we learnt all about hedgehogs. Mrs Macdonald has one living in her garden.  She is going to see if she can take a picture of it.

What did we learn ?

Catherine – They curl into a ball because they get scared.

Thomas – A baby hedgehog is called a hoglet.

Ollie – They like to use leaves to keep warm.

Grady – They like to eat berries.

Lucas C – They like to eat worms.

Tavia – Hedgehogs hibernate in Winter.  Hibernate means you go for a long sleep.

We also learnt that hedgehogs eat frogs ! Wow, we never knew that !

Primary 1b’s Vicious Visitor

On Monday, primary 1 had a surprise when we came in the classroom. We found enormous footprints on the floor all around the classroom! They went straight into the dinosaur tent. We had a chat to Rory, our class dinosaur, who told us that his mum had been in to visit! She must be huge as her feet were so big!

Rory told us that she’d had a look at our dinosaur sleepover sheets, and was pleased with how well we have been looking after him.

We then wanted to measure these footprints (using cubes), and we then compared them to the size of our feet. The dinosaur footprints were so much bigger!

We’re glad she had gone by the time we came back into class!
