Some bunnies love Primary 2

Literacy

This week our new sound was ‘ff’. Our reading task this week was to make predictions about our books looking at the pictures and words for clues.  Our writing this week was an exposition piece in which we would explain why we would be responsible pet owners.

Numeracy

Our focus this week was recognising and writing number words. We were interpreting graphs and find errors in our data handling work and used clues to find the answer to another Esti Mystery.

Science

Our new science topic is magnets. We used our lovely new class box to explore our classroom and find magnetic and non-magnetic items. We also thought about items that used magnets in everyday life and a few pupils brought in examples from home.

Art

With the start of Spring we decided to draw and paint some cute bunnies for our gallery wall. We were very pleased with them.

Technology

This week we used the laptops – we named the various parts, we spoke about how to care for them, we logged on and then opened a word document. We then typed some text using different colours and sizes of font.

A Snapshot Week in Primary 2

Literacy

This week in Primary 2 we were learning about when to use the double consonant ss ending. We continued to develop our skills using exposition writing to write about our favourite coloured crayon after listening to the story ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’. Our reading task this week was to spot the silly word in a passage relating to our class reading books.

Numeracy

We are learning about place value and playing different games using dienes materials to help embed this concept. We collected data about the birthdays in class to create a bar chart.

Linlithgow Palace

We learned all about Royal etiquette and the expectations if you met the king or queen at a banquet at Linlithgow Palace. We also learned about the food that people would eat at the banquet. Some of it would be similar to what we would eat today however other dishes we were not keen to try like swan or peacock.

Fairtrade Fortnight

We discussed Fairtrade Fortnight and the importance of buying Fairtrade products so that we can help farmers in other parts of the world. We designed a wrapper for a Fairtrade chocolate bar.

Health and Well-being

We have been developing our gymnastic skills using the equipment in the gym hall.

This week we gathered all our work in our Snapshot jotters so that we can share it with our families.

Our week in P2

Literacy

This week we learned how to use magic e with words with the e vowel sound. Our writing this week was inspired by a short film called ‘Bubbles’  where the children told the story of this animation.  Our reading tasks this week focused on the characters and sequencing of our books. We continued with our word boost words this week: jiggled, fortress, abbey, particularly, fiddlesticks and fainted.

Numeracy

This week P2 were introduced to the Esti – Mysteries and had to estimate a number after listening to some clues to help them.  We continued to use bundles of tens to help us to subtract numbers to 50 and we practised counting through the decades. We played time bingo to help us to recognise the times on the clock faces.

HWB

Each day this week we completed an activity to promote awareness of Children’s Mental Health Week. We focused upon growth as we develop our skills mentally and physically over time. We thought about the changes we had already encountered in life and changes that may happen to us in the future. We decided upon possible jobs for the future based upon our skills and talents.

Linlithgow Palace

This week we thought about life in the past at the Palace and security to keep the Royal Family safe. We practised writing our own signature with a quill and the signatures of the Royals. We discovered that secret codes were often used to keep the Royals safe at the Palace so we tried to write an important message backwards! We used construction materials to try to make a model of the Palace with a drawbridge and a fountain. We used the internet to access a 3D model of a statue from the fountain and used this artefact to make a detailed sketch.

Linlithgow Palace by Historic Environment Scotland on Sketchfab

RERC

This week we spoke about the liturgical calendar and the colours linked to the holy events. We looked very closely at the objects on our class altar and discussed the meaning behind them.

Winter Olympics

We discussed some of the events at the current Winter Olympics in China and the possibility that we may be a competitor one day as we may have a hidden talent that we have not discovered yet! We tried to make the Olympic Rings using materials in our classroom and we drew a picture of the cute mascot called Bing Dwen Dwen.

100 days of learning in Primary 2!

There was a special day at school this week!We counted all the days on the computer and on Monday it was our 100th day in Primary 2. To celebrate we had to work as a team to build a paper cup tower with 100 cups. One cup for each day of awesome learning! The best part was ….knocking the tower down.

Literacy

This week we were using magic e with u to build new words. Our narrative writing this week was based upon a different version of the Three Little Pigs where the pigs were mean and the wolf was very kind.  In reading we were set tasks to understand the reading and had to choose which sentences were true or false.  We also collected more words for our word boost wall: slithered, lurked, squealed, villagers, pace and bragged.

Numeracy

This week were using bundles of tens and single straws on our place value mats to find the answers to subtraction within 30. Using bundles of ten or dienes rods made it easier to work out the answer. We found out more about the history of time and learned that Ancient Egyptians used obelisks to tell the time over 4000 years ago. We practised drawing the correct size of hands on clock faces to show o’clock and half past.

Health & Well-being

We discussed the ‘power of yet’ to help us have a growth mindset and to realise that although we may find some tasks challenging that with practise and a positive attitude we will learn these new skills. We made warm fuzzies to help with our resilience. If we are having a bad day we can hold our warm fuzzies or talk to them and we will feel much better.

RERC

This week we enjoyed participating in the online Candlemas Day Mass. We could identify the important items on the altar that we discussed the day before such as the font, the lectern and the tabernacle.

Social Studies – Linlithgow Palace

This week we learned about the first Royals who lived at Linlithgow Palace when it was first built 597 years ago! The Stuart kings seemed to like the name James. We also found out about the famous lady called Mary, Queen of Scots. We learned that the unicorn is the national animal of Scotland and spotted them on a video of the Palace fountain. We learned about the Lion Rampant and spotted them on the crests at the entrance to the Palace. We then made some delicious royal biscuits that were very fancy and fit for a Royal banquet at the Palace.

Our week in Primary 2

Literacy

This week we were working on spelling words with magic e and the vowel a. We had fun playing four in a row identifying and reading words that had this new sound. Our narrative writing was based upon the story Little Lumpty who had a problem when he climbed up the great wall that Humpty Dumpty had fell off. How could he get down safely? In reading we used the story wands to answer questions about the books we had read and to make predictions about what will happen next.  We have been reading Scottish stories and poems this week and were brilliant in our recital of Choukie Hen which we learned to celebrate Robert Burns birthday. This week we started collecting words from our story time for our Word Boost wall this week we selected: scunnered, admitted, truce, darted and shoo.

Numeracy

We were using a numberline to make backwards jumps to help us come to the correct solution to our subtraction problems. We then had to tell an alien the steps to finding the answer as he had never heard of subtraction before.  In time this week we focused on telling the time using o’clock and half past through games and activities.

Life in the Past

Our new topic will be based upon life in Linlithgow Palace during the 15th century.  This week we were finding out about the location of the Palace and devising key questions that we would like to find out the answers too. We created a huge painting of the Palace for our classroom wall.

Expressive Arts

This week we made a link between the song we have been learning with our music specialist and our art lesson. We made a paper collage of ‘Three Craws sat upon a Wa’. We enjoyed singing the song as we created our art.

RERC

This week we discussed the special celebration of baptism and the symbols relating to this special time.

HWB

We completed our well-being check in for this term and discussed any concerns with our teacher. We set ourselves learning goals for this term for literacy and numeracy. We shared the book ‘Oh, the places you’ll go’ by Dr Seuss linked to our resilience work and everyone shared the job they would like to do in the future and a place they would like to travel to in the future. Lots of great ideas ahead for these P2 pupils.

What’s new in P2 ?

Literacy

This week we learned more about ‘magic e’ and how it changes the sound in words with i and o. We created a report on cats for our writing assessment and we challenged ourselves by learning a poem in Scots about a chicken called ‘Choukie Hen.’

Numeracy

We used a book called the ‘Shopping Basket’ by John Burningham as our school celebrated a Maths through Stories week. Using this text we used cuisinaire rods as an introduction to bar modelling. It was a fun way to connect literacy and numeracy in our learning.  In our time studies this week we learned about the different ways to measure time: seconds, minutes and hours. We then participated in a few challenges where we had to estimate how many things we could do in a minute: How many teddies could we put in a jar? How many times could we write our name? How many bricks could we build in a tower?

Health & Well-Being

We thought about the different factors that affect our energy levels: the time of day and the food we eat. At home we spoke about our resilience role models and in class we watched Boundin’ and then created a class treasure book where we shared the things that made us feel happy if we were having a bad day like the sheep in the cartoon.

Science: The Sun & The Moon

We learned about the rotation of Earth which creates night and day and about the different time zones across the world.  We were excited to see the Wolf Moon on the 17th Jan and learned that it was not dust that changed the shape of the moon but the rotation of the moon through it’s monthly phases and the way the light from the sun is reflected on it’s surface.

STEM

Our challenge this week was to create new chairs for the three bears. They had to be comfortable and at the right height for each bear. We had some ingenious ideas and most of them survived the seat testing at the end!Great team work too.

New Year and a New Term in P2

We started our week with a couple of assessments to check our growth in learning.

Literacy – This week we were learning about the sound -y at the end of a word. We were sequencing a narrative story which will be our focus in writing for the next few weeks.

Science – Our focus is the Sun and the Moon. We learned some fascinating facts about the size of the sun and that it is a star made from gas.

RERC – This week we learned from the Gospel of Luke what happened to Jesus when he visited Jerusalem as a young boy.  We looked at the locations of Bethlehem, Jerusalem and Nazareth today  and compared them to how they would have looked when Jesus was a boy.

Expressive Arts – Our drama task this week was to prepare for a journey to Space and we worked together to make a space rocket. Our art focus was on the artist Paul Cezanne and we used charcoal and watercolours to re-create a still life painting in his style.

Spanish – We were learning how to say ‘I like …’ in Spanish. We have been responding to the register in Spanish and try to say our tray colour at school lunch in Spanish too.

STEM – We had fun working as a team to create a bridge and a boat that the Gingerbread Man could use to keep himself safe as he crossed the river. There were some fabulous design ideas and that Gingerbread Man was even spoiled with a boat that had a hot tub onboard !

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in P2

All our work this week was completed in our Snapshot jotters and we look forward to sharing them with our families next week.

Our learning during Week 13 in Primary 2.

Literacy

What an exciting week we have had in literacy celebrating Scottish Book Week and taking home our Read,Write, Count bags.  On Monday afternoon we had our Book Bag Launch where we opened up a huge, heavy parcel that had been delivered to our classroom. Inside there was a book bag for everyone. We then took part in activities linked to the contents. On Wednesday we celebrated book week by making our own mini-books, bookmarks and designing book covers. We enjoyed some online stories on the ipad using ‘Bookflix’.

Numeracy

We continued with our studies in counting money. This week our focus was finding the correct coins to match a price tag, we also played games matching coins and counting amounts in purses. We were using the colour, shape and size of coins to help us to identify them. In our measure task this week we were using different tools to measure length in our playground. We used trundle wheels, metre sticks, tape measures and rulers. We even found a tape measure that was 10 metres long so had fun using that to measure the fence.

The Senses

Our experiment was to test our sense of smell. We had to identify six hidden scents. Some were good scents and some were bad scents! Most of us recognised the mint, orange and fish smells. However banana, garlic and onion were not so easy. Some pupils thought that garlic was a pair of smelly socks or a hamster !!

Health & Well-Being

We read a new story book called My Monster & Me and identified the different zones of regulation that the main character was experiencing throughout the story. The boy in the story had a worry but he felt much better after he shared the worry with his grandma. We thought about five ways we could help ourselves if we have a worry or a problem.

Catholic Education Week

This week we developed our understanding of our faith. We designed prayer cards after thinking very carefully about all the things we are thankful for. We enjoyed learning some new hymns to sing at Mass. Our Laudato Si task was thinking about the weather changes and how that will affect the birds in our area. We used cereal and pipe cleaners to create beautiful bird feeders to hang on the trees in our playground. We know that birds will appreciate us thinking about them.

Our learning in Week 12 in Primary 2

Literacy

This week we were using the vowel diagraphs ow and ue to build words and use in our dictation sentences. We wrote an information report on ducklings as our new genre for developing our writing skills.

Numeracy

This week we explored money. We played games to develop our awareness of the value if the different coins and put them into order. We decided that it would be fun to have a class shop so that we could count money in a real life setting. After much thought we decided that a pet shop would be perfect so it opened for business on Friday. We were introduced to measure using non-standard units. We used lollipop sticks to measure the length of classroom objects. First of all we had to estimate the length and then we used the sticks to check our predictions.

The Senses

Our experiments this week tested our sense of taste. We tried different solutions on our taste buds and had to work out if the flavour was sweet. sour, salty or bitter. We then had a vote to find out which was our favourite taste and realised that there was a mixture of favourites. We also discussed that your preferences may change over time and you may like a flavour that you didn’t like before.

Remembrance Day/COP26

We spoke about the significance of Remembrance Day and had a two minute silence at 11am on the 11th November. We made our class cross that will be placed at the War Memorial at Strathbrock.  We decorated our pebbles that we brought in from home with images of a happy planet and then placed them on the bridge outside our school. We hope that the COP26 event make good decisions for the future of our planet.

Spanish

We learned how to sing Happy Birthday in Spanish and then made a Spanish birthday card to give to our friend.

Week 11 in Primary 2

Literacy

This week we were learning the new vowel diagraphs: ay and ea and using them to word build and write sentences. We had our final week focussing on writing descriptions and we were describing Paddington Bear.  We are very proud of our progress in writing and meeting our writing targets.

Numeracy

We were exploring number patterns using the big number square in the classroom and then made number pattern frogs to help us remember in class. We also found out about odd and even numbers.  We were developing our skills with the tessellation of 2D shapes.

Topic

We started our new science topic on the senses. We found out the names for the different parts of the eye and then we tried out the ‘Magical Milk’ experiment which tested our eyes to watch rapid changes in the liquid.

Art

We created some precious paper pups using paper collage. We decorated our pebbles for the school COP26 display. We were thinking of designs that would reflect our natural world and the sustainable goals.

Week 9 in Primary 2

Literacy

This week we were learning the diagraphs:  oy and oa. We used two new resources to help us with our word building – Doorway speller on the ipads and the random word wheel on the Smartboard. Both were a big hit with the class. Our PM Writing theme this week was writing a description of a wind chime so we put our technology skills to the test and created a wind chime to hang on the tree outside our classroom. We then wrote a description using full sentences. Our Pupil Support Workers got a lovely surprise when they spotted it on the tree this morning.

Numeracy

We are concentrating on making patterns. This week we were sorting out patterns and naming them: polka dots, checks, zig-zags, wavy, floral, ombre, striped, two tone. There are so many to discover! We used our knowledge of them to design a pair of socks for the P2 Sock Shop.  Having spent a few weeks exploring 3D shapes we are now investigating 2D shapes. We used these shapes to make some shape monsters to put up on our display wall.

HWB

This week we were learning about the importance of a good night’s sleep. We found out that in P2 we need 10 to 12 hours sleep, so early to bed on a school night is a good idea. A good night’s sleep will give us:

  • —Energy
  • —Brain power
  • —Time to grow
  • —Time to digest our food
  • —Restore and  mend our bodies
  • —Better skin and hair
  • —A happier mood

Signs of Autumn in Primary 2

Literacy

We were learning two new diagraphs this week, the sounds ee and oo. We used them to build words and played a matching game.  We practised the correct formation of p and k. For our final week of writing a recount we wrote a story about planting in our garden. We used our writing targets to check that we were doing a great job.

Numeracy

This week we were counting collections up to the number 50. We discovered that it was easier to make groups of ten so that we did not lose count. We took a walk around the school grounds to look for 3D shapes. We found lots of cuboids and cylinders but not many cubes.

Topic – Broxburn

Did you know that Broxburn was named in 1600 by Sir Richard Cockburn?  He used two Scottish words to make the town’s name. Brock which was the old Scot’s word for badger and burn which is the Scottish word for a stream or water.  P2 created drawings of badgers and thought about the other local wildlife we have seen near our school and houses. We discussed some of the facts we know about local landmarks such as The Bings, Union Canal, our church and our school.

Religious Education – Autumn

We spoke about the seasonal changes happening as we step into autumn. We created fantastic drawings of a Dingle, Dangle Scarecrow too.

Getting into the zone in Primary 2

Literacy

During this short week in Primary 2 we have been learning to read and spell words with the ‘ph’ phoneme such as ‘phone’ ‘photo’ ‘dolphin’ and ‘elephant’. We also explored verbs in the past tense in a recount writing activity called ‘My Holiday Diary’ where we filled in the missing verb then copied it into our jotters.
Numeracy
In numeracy this week we have been learning to count to 50 through various activities: worksheets, matching word numbers to the number and using numicon to create numbers from 30 – 50.
Topic
In our ‘Broxburn Topic’ we discussed the shops and services we have in our community such as the canal, church, school and the purposes of these buildings. We enjoyed sharing our favourite places to go – Almondale park and the swimming pool!
Health and Well-being

This week we learnt about the different Zones in the Zones of regulation: Green, Red, Yellow and blue . This helps us identify which zone we are in, in relation to how we are feeling, for example we know the green zone is when we feel happy, calm and focused which means we are ready to learn. The blue zone is when we feel tiered, bored or sick. When we are in the yellow zone we may feel excited, worried or silly. The red zone is when we feel angry and out of control.

Week 4 in Primary 2

Literacy

This week our focus has been on the sounds ‘th’ and ‘ng’. We have used these sounds to make words on the magnetic boards and to write dictation words in our jotters. We are continuing to recognise more of our Fry’s words to help us to read and we are remembering to complete our reading homework task and bring our reading folders to school everyday.  Our writing theme this week was ‘Helping at Home’ and goodness me we have so many busy P2’s that there must be sparkling homes all over Broxburn.

Numeracy

We have been counting backwards and forwards in 2’s to 20 and finding the missing numbers in non-consecutive number sequences. We used all the lovely new shape resources in school to discover the properties of the shapes. We know that they have faces, edges and corners.

Our Community

Our new theme is all about our community in Broxburn. This week we were learning about the location of Broxburn and looking at maps. We also thought about the different jobs people  would have in Broxburn and the uniforms that they would wear.

RERC

We completed lots of religious learning this week. We found out about the story of Moses, we celebrated Our Lady’s birthday on the 8th September and produced some lovely pictures for the church. Father Jeremy paid us a surprise visit to collect our art work. We ended the week learning about the story of Noah’s Ark and worked as a team to create a beautiful frieze for the school corridor.

Health and Well-being

As usual we enjoyed participating in our daily mindfulness and 5 a day fitness sessions. Our focus was on safety in the home and the dangers of matches and lighters. We also spoke about our ‘Get Active’ theme and thought about things we can do at home to help us to relax and things we can do to become more active. Primary 2 had lots of fabulous ideas for both lists.

Our week in Primary 2

Literacy:

This week we have been focusing on ‘sh’ and ‘ch’ sounds and bending them with our other familiar sounds, this helps us to improve our reading fluency. We wrote a letter to Mrs Kellock requesting what we would like in our new playground and we can’t wait to see what it will look like. We took turns reading aloud in our reading groups and really impressed our teachers. We have also been practising our letter formation skills.
Numeracy:
This week we continued practising counting to 20 through various activities such as matching the quantity to the number, bingo, and ordering number puzzles. We also started our new topic on 3D shape which involved sorting 3D shapes, and making 3D shapes.
Health and Wellbeing
Everyday we have been using a well-being check-in to help express our emotions and feelings. We have been focusing on how to stay safe by discussing how we can stay safe in the classroom and identifying hazards. We also explored the SHANARRI indicators and what they all mean.  We know they are Safe, Healthy, Achieving, Nurtured, Responsible, Respected and Included.
Expressive arts

In music we have been exploring rhythm using a wooden percussion block, and we have been singing beautifully. In art we made portraits of Katie Morag.

Learning is fun in Primary 2

Literacy :

This week we have been building CVC words and reviewing our common words, these skills will help us to become excellent readers. We also took home our new group reading books to read with our families.  We wrote a letter to Katie Morag telling her all about Broxburn as she has never visited the mainland. We also took a virtual trip to the Edinburgh Book Festival where Debi Gliori read us her latest book called ‘A cat called Waverley.’ Debi showed us how she created the illustrations using charcoal so we decided to give it a go too!

Numeracy:

We have been counting to twenty, ordering numbers to twenty, developing our number formation, comparing quantities using the terms ‘greater than’ and ‘smaller than’.

Health & Well-being:

We have been learning about the importance of keeping our hands clean and learned a fabulous wee song to sing as we wash our hands. Every day we have been using mindfulness sessions to help us to be calm and relaxed. We had such a fun time at ‘Build Up’ time sharing chalk and bubbles as our reward for having a great week at school.

Katie Morag:

This week we were identifying Scottish wildlife that Katie Morag  would see on the Island of Struay. We also found out some interesting facts about these creatures.  We looked at photos of the Island of Coll and compared island life to life in Broxburn. We used directions on a grid to find places on the island using forwards, backwards and left and right. We managed to find all the character’s homes. We had fun using phrases from the book such as Bobby Dazzler and Gee Wilikers! We have been learning some Scottish songs too!

Class Charter & Rights Respecting School:

We discussed the importance of knowing our rights and what that would look like in school. We created our class charter using a favourite character… Paddington Bear. We have all signed our promise agreeing to follow the class decisions on the charter.

Primary 6 – The week we met our buddies.

A lovely week for Primary 6 where they met and spent quality time reading stories to their buddies who are about to start school in August.  We also planned a healthy lunch for our buddy as part of Fitness Fortnight. We had to think very carefully about the nutrition and the flavours that would appeal to our new friends.

Lots of new skills were introduced this week too. In Numeracy we were learning how to work out percentages and how they relate to fractions and decimals. We made our own compass and then used them to follow directions to discover treasure that had been hidden in the classroom !

In Literacy we were developing the skills of skimming and scanning to discover facts about Stonehenge. We also used a picture cue to write mystery story about a creature with huge tentacles! We also created a discussion piece of writing debating the arguments for and against shorter lunchtimes. The outcome ? The majority decided to opt for lunchtimes that had no changes.  We looked at the AR results and had two AR Rockstars for the month of May. Our first Rockstar had a pass average of 97% and our second Rockstar passed 32 tests.

In outdoor learning we tried out the ‘Shake a Tree’ method to find some tree dwelling mini-beasts and identify them using our ID sheets. Our first creature found was a weevil.

Finally, we planned our outdoor learning day for next week together. We are looking forward to learning some new skills using nature, water and fire !!

Our new learning activities in Primary 6

Last week Primary 6 had quite a few new learning experiences. We tried out making some sculptures using model magic for the first time. It was a strange texture but we quickly used our skills in creativity to make a snail sculpture and a textured tile landscape scene. After a couple of days drying out we could then add colour to our creations.  We had also been learning the names for collective nouns and had a few guesses at the correct name for a group of snails. We discovered that the correct name is a rout of snails.

Outdoor learning provided two tasks. Exploring a method to measure the height of the tree in our playground. Our estimates were too low as the correct height was 57 metres. We also used twigs to create 3D shape creations which were very challenging but we managed it.

Our exposition writing topic this week was about the process of making bubble gum. It was very enlightening and put some people off eating it again ! Using Languagenut on our ipads and computers to learn more phrases in Spanish and French has become very popular. It is a fabulous resource.

We began our studies in God’s Loving Plan and thought about the changes we have already experienced in our lives and our gifts and talents. We also read passages from the Bible to help us understand about the journey of Paul as he spread the good news about Jesus.

Election Week in Primary 6.

A short week but a busy week in Primary 6 as we completed the final stages of our topic on the government. We finalised our manifestos through some internet research to choose our top three priorities for the future of Scotland. We then prepared our debates and took turns sharing our thoughts under the guidance of our presiding officer who ensured everyone was respectful and did not go over time in their debate.  After the debates everyone in class had the chance to put their vote in the ballot box and the presiding officer counted the votes. With 30% of the votes our new First Minister was from the Conservative party.

We had our second group of children sharing their personal presentations on a topic of their own choice. This week we heard about Concorde, Dolly the Sheep, Marine Animals, Art and the movie Tangled. It was lovely to hear that the Concorde presentation inspired another member of the class to make a visit to the Museum of Flight this weekend.

This week pupils took over the role of leading the Number Talks and encouraging their friends to participate. It is not as easy as it looks!

P6 – End of Term 2

We started our week sharing our experiences whilst taking part in Earth Hour on Saturday evening. Some pupils enjoyed family time, others played board games or had a candle lit indoor picnic.  We enjoyed learning about Holy week and created some Easter crafts and cards with a peace dove.

Outdoor learning was based upon Spring. We created an artistic expression of ‘Spring’ by Vivaldi after listening to the music in class. We also went on a scavenger hunt to find signs of Spring within our school grounds.

We ended our week reviewing our learning within term two to create a learning across the four contexts display board and also thinking about our personal improvements and next steps for term three.

We ended our week with a few April Fools pranks which included researching the endangered tree octopus !!!

Primary 6 learn about Article 27

Primary 6 have been learning about Article 27. We watched a video of a girl in Kenya and compared her school day to our school day. Some things were the same but some things were very different. We felt emotional watching the living standards that some people have to live in.

We then made little paper houses and wrote words on them to show the things that we would expect as our rights. For example :shelter, love, food and clean water and a cosy bed.

It was very interesting learning about article 27.

P6a – Being back at school is awesome !!

This week Primary 6a were delighted to be back in the classroom with their friends. We were learning about the tactics used to win the Battle of Bannockburn and found out that Robert the Bruce did not look like the statues made to honour him.

We looked again at the art work of Vincent Van Gogh. Last time we created a landscape in his style but this week we re-created his Sunflowers art work.

We have been completing our assessments in literacy and number and have pretty good scores. We wrote letters to Mrs Kellock, our new head teacher to help her settle in.

Outdoor learning this week taught us new games and challenges and we also learned how to do CPR to the beat of Stayin’ Alive.

Overall we have been doing very well at school this week.

Love from Primary 6

Another busy week in Primary 6. We had an introduction to grid references and continued our work with factors in numeracy.

On Tuesday, we investigated online safety during Internet Safety Day. We are making sure that we were keeping ourselves safe by using age appropriate apps and not sharing any personal details online.

We now have our team selected for the West Lothian Euroquiz competition. We completed our studies on Europe by studying the Dutch artist, Vincent Van Gogh and creating art work in his style. We have also been learning how to count to 50 in Spanish.

We are all set now to enjoy a snowy half-term holiday!

Progress in Primary 6

Another week completed in Primary 6 with lots of new knowledge. We used our skills in area to plan a playground. We started work on mulitples and researching the mathematician, Eratosthenes.

We thought about our emotions and how they affect our body along with a focus on our mental well-being.

We continued to develop our skills in reading for information with a focus on Scottish squirrels and experienced writing another style of poetry, Diamante poetry.

Our Scottish poems from last week were sent to the website, Scots Hoose. Author and poet, Matthew Fitt was very impressed with our poems and said : They are braw, gallus and just pure brilliant. I had a great time reading them.

As a thank you he sent us a video reading of ‘The Eejits’ by Roald Dahl. What a treat!

Jings! Crivvens! Help ma Boab in P6!

This week has held a plethora of Scottish experiences for Primary 6. We started off our week  celebrating the birthday of our national poet, Robert Burns. We were able to do a virtual tour of his cottage and use an interactive classroom to learn about his poetry and songs.

On Tuesday we met another well known face in Scottish literature with our reading task based upon the Oor Wullie comic strip.

You can see the influence on our work this week with a selection of some of the fabulous Scottish poetry that the P6 pupils created yesterday.

We have continued to develop our skills in measure with a focus on perimeter and using budgets to practise our money calculations.

In Spanish we have been learning to discuss the weather. We were also learning about customs in European countries and famous artists and musicians.

Well done Primary 6.

Perfect Poetry in Primary 6

Primary 6 have been perfecting their poetry skills this week by creating alliteration poems. We have continued to develop our money skills looking at deals that are value for money. We have been researching European landmarks, flags and currencies. We found this website a fun way to become more familiar with the geography of Europe: https://online.seterra.com/en/vgp/3286?c=J8PS7          We have been thinking about our personal achievements and the energy we get from food in Health and Well-Being.

Online Learning in Primary 6

Our first week of online learning in Term 2 in Primary 6 and we were offered a variety of learning opportunities to develop our skills across the curriculum. Our numeracy focus was using money budgets and making price comparisons. We used our knowledge of doubles and near doubles to find solutions in Number Talks. In Literacy we had fun creating our own limericks and using a rhythm pattern. In preparation for the Euroquiz we  researched various aspects of European capital cities. As you can see we used different methods to complete our work and upload it to our teachers.

Fitness Fortnight Week 1 in Primary 6

Primary 6 have been super busy completing all the fitness fortnight challenges this week.

We have been busy calculating all our numeracy facts linked to sports events. Designing banners and posters to promote a healthy lifestyle and to support our house during our virtual Sports Day.

We created an acrostic poem and a healthy eating plan for our new P1 buddies next session. We tried new mindfulness activities to relax our mind and promote well-being and gave Mr Muldoon a helping hand creating some fun sporting events for the virtual Sports Day.

We can’t wait for Fitness Fortnight Week 2 !

Learning in Primary 6

A shorter week but a super busy week in Primary 6. We won’t be getting lost after lockdown after learning about directions and grid references on maps.  We are also learning about the process of pollination in our new science topic.  We also created a pic collage of the five things we do each day to keep us happy:

Be more active

Help others

Take notice

Develop relationships

Learn something new

However our most important task this week was to begin to prepare our buddy information for the new Primary 1 pupils. This year we have to be very creative using our digital skills to share information about us and our school so that the wee ones have a smooth transition into starting school.

Probability and Persuasion in Primary 6

This week Primary 6 have been investigating probability with some games and data handling tasks. Some children chose to do their tasks outside in the sunshine and others preferred to stay inside in the shade. Lovely to have that choice while we learn at home.

We continued to develop our skills in persuasive writing by creating an advert for a product of our choice and use language that would entice someone to buy that product.

We have also been learning about the next stage in the Wars of Independence with the Battle of Falkirk,  which was not too far away in distance. The children researched some of the weapons and armour used during this period in history to create diagrams, a scratch animation advert and to design their own weapon that would have been more successful for the Scots in this battle.

Well done Primary 6 we enjoyed seeing your creativity this week.

Home Learning in Primary 6

Primary 6 have been very busy this week with our online learning. We learned how to use brackets in numeracy to help us group numbers in order to work out the answer easily.

Our writing focus was creating a persuasive letter to the Council regarding our thoughts on graffiti. We looked at some of the debating issues around this topic and the work of the graffiti artist, Banksy.  The pupils produced very well thought out and mature opinions on the subject.

Graffiti – click this link to see our points of view.

Our Science work focused on chemical reactions as we used some household solutions to try and clean the copper oxide from some old 1p and 2p coins. The most effective solution was ketchup due to the mixture of acid and salt.

We developed our drawing skills by using a Disney animation tutorial to create portraits of Pluto and other favourite Disney characters.

In Spanish, we videoed ourselves having a conversation about our feelings and role playing two characters, it was lots of fun.

Well done Primary 6 ! We are very proud of your dedication to completing your tasks and thank you to our supportive parents too.

Art in the Garden

Primary 6 have been learning about tourism in Scotland and have been investigating different tourist attractions. As part of our studies we decided to take an art class at the Botanic Gardens.

We learned how to create a piece of art using the skill of batik. We began with an expedition through the desert and the rainforest (greenhouses) where we drew plants that would inspire our designs. We magnified our designs and then traced them onto fabric. We then went over the design with hot wax and used fabric dye to add colour.

This was the best art we have ever created !

The Swimming Pool – Version 2

Primary 6 made the biiiiiggggeeessstttt artwork in the school ! We were inspired by the artist Matisse who is famous for ‘painting with scissors’ when creating collages. We learned all about Matisse because he has some of his work on display at the Modern Art Gallery in Edinburgh.

We worked collaboratively to create a marine scene using shapes of sea creatures and swimmers. If you wish to see this art work coming together then watch our time lapse clip on Twitter.

Re-drafting our writing in P6

We learned how to improve on our volleyball club leaflets. Our teacher gave us some tips and showed us what a good one looks like. Here are some tips we found useful:

  1. Choose three complimentary colours to make the leaflet eye catching.
  2. Use graphics and bubbles to make the important information stand out.
  3. Bullet points help to organise information. We used them to list the benefits of the club.

We could all see an improvement in our second draft and will use these tips again.

Thinking Readers in Primary 6

Today Primary 6 were developing their literacy skills with their thinking reader partners. Our focus was a factual text about honeybees. We were given the opportunity to discover the importance of bees in our environment and how we can help them to survive. We also developed our reading skills by learning new words, using facts to create a visualizer, think about the  products we get from bees, creating questions and summarising.

“My favourite task was the summarising as I had to say what had happened in twenty words. It was fun making questions for other groups. I think doing these tasks will help me to understand the text better. I did not know that a young bee was called a larva.”

Healthy Tuckshop

At our school every Monday to Thursday we provide a healthy tuck shop where you can buy a snack.  We have a great choice of snacks available: water, fruit juice, yoghurt, oranges, apples, grapes, fruit salad, watermelon, pineapple, strawberries and melon. Everything costs 20p.  Primary 6 are happy to serve you each day and give you help choosing a delicious snack that is good for you. Hope to see there !

Checking in at the Cactus Hotel

Primary 6 have been working on a book study this week. We have been learning all about the giant Saguaro cactus which is found in Arizona.

“These cacti can grow up to 50 feet tall and live for over 200 years. They can weigh the same as 5 cars. Lots of animals use the cactus as a home. We have been researching the Gila Woodpecker, Jack Rabbit and coyotes that are animals found in this desert.” – Zachary

“I really enjoyed doing the art about the cactus. I had to draw the details on the cactus and the holes where the animals would live.” – Mirin

“I had to find the meaning of new words that were in the book and some of them were quite challenging. I then had to find these words in a wordsearch. The next task was to find out about the animals who use the cactus as a home.” – Marwa

“Basically I never knew that so many animals lived in a cactus and even when it dies and falls over different animals move in to live in the cactus. Another amazing fact is that people can eat cacti.” – Charlie

PFFA – The gift of Wisdom

Today Mrs Fitzpatrick answered our questions on the gift of wisdom. We invited her into our class as this was one of our tasks for the Pope Francis Faith Awards. She told us about the many subjects and experiences that had helped to make her wise.

Mrs Fitzpatrick told us that her dad made her wise as he taught her great things and gave her advice. She enjoys reading autobiographies and she found the book about Alex Ferguson to be inspirational.

We enjoyed having Mrs Fitzpatrick in to talk to us today and she gave us good advice for our lives. We have written a report on the advice that she shared with us.

Seasons for Growth

St Nicholas are offering the P6 and P7 pupils the opportunity to participate in our Seasons for Growth programme this term. Seasons for Growth is a programme devised to help children to cope with changes in their family through loss or bereavement. The programme was developed in Australia over 20 years ago and is used across the globe to support the emotional wellbeing of young people. We hope to offer the programme to other age groups in the coming months.

Career Chats in Primary 6

Primary 6 have been so lucky to hear about a variety of jobs from parents who have been visiting our classes over the past three weeks. Today we heard from Mrs Spence who explained how her job will influence the future and  lifestyle of prospective jobs for our pupils and showed how life may be in  2037 – it was fascinating and certainly food for thought. Many pupils have been inspired by these presentations and have started to think about their future employment. We would like to say a huge thank you to the parents who took time to pay us a visit.

P6 got a visit from Mr Sanderson

Today P6 had a visit from Mr Sanderson. P6 had lots of fun learning about oil rigs and what you need to do to be a surveyor.

Mr Sanderson explained that there is a crisis for jobs in this area and encouraged us to think about a career in this field, especially the  girls.

You only have to work for two weeks and then you get four weeks off. You get the same wage as a footballer and the food on the oil rig is amazing and it is like a hotel with a football pitch, gym, swimming pool and a squash court.  The downside is that you miss your family.

You don’t need to go to university as you learn on the job but you need to be good at maths.

Bannockburn and Stirling Castle

Primary 6 went on an AMAZING trip to Bannockburn and Stirling Castle yesterday.  At Bannockburn there was a lot of really cool things to do : you could explore the battle by looking at the 3D giant screens, we could touch the weapons and armour, and we could interact with digital people who were part of the battle. The Chiltern spears were 12 -15 feet tall. The chain mail was really heavy. We then went into the battle room where we split into the Scottish army and the English army. We then plotted the battle on an interactive map. On this occasion, England won the battle through the use of our strategic commanders. It was named the Battle of the Bowling Club, as that is the building on that piece of land now. The map could change from present day to the landscape of 1314. We also took a walk to the Rotunda and saw the famous statue of Robert the Bruce.

A short journey away and we arrived at Stirling Castle where we spotted another statue of Robert the Bruce and we could see the Wallace Monument in the distance. We were amazed at how narrow the River Forth is at Stirling. We explored a room with a Scottish history timeline and recognised many events from our studies. We then explored the chapel where Mary, Queen of Scots had her coronation as a baby. Next stop was to the Great Hall where we sat on thrones which also incorporated a potty !! We then popped into the Palace and admired the famous Stirling Heads before spending time in the Queen’s Bed Chamber. The Palace staff told us about the history of the Castle and were really funny.

We enjoyed this trip and would highly recommend it to other primary schools.

Arctic Return Presentation

Mr Smith came into school to tell us all about an Arctic adventure that he is going on in March. He showed us all the equipment he will be using and even let us taste some of the dehydrated food that he will be eating on his expedition.

He explained that he has been training for the expedition by pulling tyres to build up his strength. He will be taking the same route as a historic Arctic explorer called John Rae, who was also Scottish. He allowed us to try out his clothing and equipment for the trip. His clothing will prevent him from getting frostbite as the temperatures will be minus 30 to minus 50 degrees ! There is also a risk from hungry Polar Bears so Mr Smith will use an electric fence to keep his tent safe at night. We learned LOTS of interesting facts and look forward to seeing his route progress online and he will try to contact us via satellite whilst on his expedition. Primary 6 will design a St Nicholas flag that he will leave in the Arctic Circle.

Good luck Mr Smith!

A Cup of Christmas Cheer

This week we made a special delivery to Broxburn Care Home to drop off a ‘Cup of Christmas Cheer’ for every resident. Our Relationships vertical learning group discussed the importance of spreading joy at Christmas and made up little packs which included a personalised Christmas card, a Christmas cup with a hot drink sachet and a wee cake. The package was well received by the residents and staff who were delighted with our little gifts.

Virtual Reality

Yesterday P6 visited the International Space Station, then they landed on the moon, then they popped in to the Kennedy Space Centre…using our new virtual reality headsets.

The class had a fabulous time exploring all the places that we have been learning about over the past few weeks. I wonder where we will be exploring next ?

SSPCA

On Tuesday we had a visit from Clare who reminded us how to care for animals. We worked in teams to play a game answering questions about different animals and what they eat, the name for their young and which category of animal they are. We had a great time learning all about it.

Mindfulness Session in P6

Mrs Dickson, a parent from P6a visited our classes to share her knowledge about mindfulness. She helped us to understand the importance of mindfulness by showing us a jug of water and stirred some glitter into it. The water represented our brain and the glitter represented our thoughts and it showed us how busy our brain can become and this is why it is so important to have quiet, calm time …mindfulness.

We then participated in some exercises. Mindfulness eating with a raisin, sitting like a frog whilst listening to a CD from this book:

Ruby said, “I found the mindfulness very calming.” Molly added, “I really enjoyed the mindfulness eating as it made you savour your food more.”

“Mindfulness helps you to get into a place where you can think about your problems or relax without feeling stress.” said Callum.

We would like to give Mrs Dickson a big thank you for teaching us about mindfulness.

The BIG Debate in Primary 6

Primary 6 have been researching the moon landing of 1969. There are many conspiracy theories surrounding this event so P6 set to work to discover all the facts and then to have a debate.

After several arguments the class had a vote and the response was 50:50 as we could not decide which theory to believe.

It was fascinating introduction to the skill of debate.

Tricky Tessellation

Primary 6 have been learning about 2D shapes and putting them together to make tessellations. We also learnt that the artist, M.C. Escher used tesselation to create his art works. We have some feedback from our classmates and they said:

Molly said “It was fun but challenging.”

Rebbecca said “To try to tessellate a cross is really hard.”

Beth said “You can see tesselation in everyday life including slabs, tiles, fabric design, pineapples and many more things.”

This week’s bloggers are Isla G and Ruby

Primary 6 are using their logic !

Primary 6 were having fun using our new ‘Logic Cards’ to complete some tricky problem solving tasks.

Ethan said “It was challenging but really fun. My task involved finding the solution to a drawing problem with shapes where I couldn’t take the pen of the page or repeat drawing a line.”

Harris continued, ” The advantage of working with a partner on this task was that we could share ideas and piggy back to find a better solution.”

P5 STEM – Floating and Sinking

During our STEM activities this week we decided to explore floating and sinking as it would be useful learning alongside our Titanic topic.

Our first activity involved making a prediction to decide if cans of juice would float or sink and why we made this hypothesis. We discovered that the cans of diet juice floated as they were less dense than the cans with sugary drinks. We also discovered that the non-diet juice contained over 18 café sized packets of sugar. After much discussion we concluded that water or milk would be a healthier option.

The next challenge was to make a change so that the floating orange would sink. The groups worked well coming up with different ways to achieve this: trying to squeeze the juice out, making holes in the skin and cutting it into smaller pieces. However the removal of the skin did the trick and Luke was able to explain why. Here’s the science:  Drop an orange into water and it floats, but remove the peel from that same orange and it will sink. The unpeeled orange floats because the rind is very porous and filled with tiny pockets of air. Even though you’re removing mass when you peel the orange, the peeled orange is more dense and sinks in the water.

The final challenge was to make a marshmallow sink and again imaginative ideas were at work. Making it smaller, cutting off the powder coating, squeeeeeezzzing it so hard to remove the air trapped inside. After much strenuous and messy activity the successful team managed to sink a small piece of pink marshmallow by making it smaller and squeezing it flat. We wondered what would happen if we dropped the marshmallow into different liquids such as cooking oil or used mini marshmallows. Further investigations are required.

P5 Titanic Topic

Primary 5 have been using their creativity to record their learning about The Titanic. All pupils created a pencil drawn image of the ship on her maiden voyage and also used fantastic vocabulary to describe the sinking of the ship in the Atlantic Ocean. Tomorrow we will be using the medium of drama to extend our learning during our Titanic Workshop.

Adventures with Paddington Bear

Primary 5a have been learning how to draw Paddington Bear and were successful in learning from their mistakes. We wrote interesting Paddington Bear stories from scratch. Miss Morgan brought in her Paddington Bear. He was very old because Miss Morgan got him when she was 5 years old !

We watched three very old, original cartoons about Paddington Bear and discovered he was a very polite bear but also got up to a lot of mischief ! We used this information to write our own adventure stories. We enjoyed learning about Paddington Bear and will enjoy our memories of this time in the future.

STEM – Elf House

Primary 5 have been developing lots of skills whilst designing their Elf House.

Ethan – ” We had to make a house for an elf. The house had to provide him with a place to sleep, somewhere to eat, it had to be safe and cosy with lights.”

Grace – “It had to have a Christmas theme and look like a place where an elf would stay.”

Clara – ” We had to measure our elf so that we could design and make furniture to the correct size.”

Skye – ” We had to give our elf a name. We called them: Fifi, Merlin, Nick and Ellie.”

Isla G – ” We started off sharing all our ideas on a piece of paper and then planning the design of our house.”

Hubert – “We worked as a team. We had to listen to each other and encourage each other.”

Maya – ” We used boxes, straws, pompoms, fancy paper, tinfoil, lollipop sticks, cotton wool and electric lights. We used these things to create furniture, rugs, chimneys and plants.”

Harris – “It was great fun working together to make our Elf House. Each house is unique.”

Our elves are looking forward to moving into their new homes this week.

An Invitation to you…

Preparations are well under way for our first FAST session of this term on Thursday 26th October at 3.30pm in the P5 classrooms.

If you have a child who attends pre-school year at Nursery, Primary 1 or Primary 2 then we would be delighted to see you along with the rest of your family at FAST. We welcome older and younger siblings, parents and grandparents to participate in our sessions.

Here are some quotes from the families who participated in January:

· I’ve realised since starting FAST that my daughter is more independent than I thought.

· My two children and I have really enjoyed FAST. It has also helped me by meeting other parents.

· It has become the highlight of my daughter’s week, when we pick her up from Nursery,  “Fast Families” is the first thing she says.

· Our son has spoken a lot about FAST and enjoyed it very much. It has given him confidence.

· FAST has given me the chance to see how my son is in school. I now know he is confident and finds FAST very enjoyable.

· I now understand the importance of play at home. It has developed the quality of the interactions between my daughter and I.

· Through FAST we have developed our play, learned new words in English and made contact with new friends.

· My son loves the diversity of the activities. Drawing, singing and talking about emotions. He always asks, “Is it FAST today?” He can’t wait for the next FAST session.

· Our boys enjoy the kids time the most and my wife and I enjoy the parents time. We talk about everyday problems that we all encounter and learning how to cope with them has been very useful.

· The best thing about FAST has been developing new relationships. Having the opportunity to meet other parents and develop friendships. My son has met new friends who are not in his Nursery class and this will help when he starts P1. It has been great getting to know the FAST team too.

A lovely ‘family fun’ hamper worth £25 will be going home with two families on Thursday evening and we will be enjoying a delicious Italian meal from Gianninos ….all FREE OF CHARGE.

Please join us on Thursday for fun, food and FAST families. To book a place please contact Miss Morgan through the school office.

STEM – Bridge Building

Today P5 were designing and building bridges using strong shapes. We had investigated famous bridges from all around the world and looked very carefully at the shapes used to make them fit for purpose.

Team Straw managed to support 4 cars on their bridge. Team Paper managed to support 7 cars and Team Spaghetti supported 3 cars.

Great team work all round.

Adventures in Primary 5

My goodness P5 have had a busy few weeks ! We have been looking at historical aspects of the curriculum through a number of events. We participated in an ‘archaeological dig’ where we discovered various parts of a skeleton and then had to re-construct the formation of the body and complete a tricky calculation to work out the height of the person.

We took a trip to Edinburgh where we saw the various locations that we had been studying in class and even went back in time to meet Mary, Queen of Scots. She provided us with costumes from 1566 so that we could attend the christening of King James VI of Scotland who also became King James I of England. He was the King that Guy Fawkes tried to blow up at the Houses of Parliament on the 5th November. Mary taught us the ‘Dance of the Washerwoman’ and we also examined the food that would be served at a Royal banquet and used oranges and cloves to make pomanders. There were some unpleasant odours around in the 1500’s ! On our journey we explored the Royal Apartments in the Palace of Holyroodhouse and saw the spot where David Rizzio was murdered by Lord Darnley. We walked up the Royal Mile passed The Museum of Edinburgh where the collar and bowl of Greyfriars Bobby are kept. We spotted the distinctive Tolbooth building that served as jail in the days of Old Edinburgh. We passed John Knox’s house and admired the architecture and spoke about the window tax which resulted in the ‘wee windaes’. Further along the High Street we saw the Mercat Cross where the residents of Old Edinburgh would hear the news and passed the impressive St Giles Cathedral. We saw the location of the infamous Deacon Brodie’s workshop. Finally we arrived at Edinburgh Castle and saw the many defence features of the building, the one o’clock gun, Mons Meg and the statues of Wallace and Bruce. We managed to visit St Margaret’s Chapel which is the oldest building in the Castle. We were exhausted but had a wonderful time.

In art we have been exploring a new technique where we created autumnal art. We blended oil pastels to create the leaves and then blended paint to create a water effect around them. They were very impressive.

Primary 5 – Apple Science

Primary 5 have been investigating Chemical Changes using apples.

We used various liquids to try and prevent the oxidisation of the apples. We discovered that lemon juice was the best liquid to use to prevent the process due to the citric acid, however vinegar escalated the process. We created a grid to show our predictions for each solution.

We also discussed the life cycle of an apple and harvested a few seeds so that we could grow our own apple trees. We watched a time lapse video of the process and now wait with bated breath to see if we will have any success with our green fingers.

We watched the chemical changes that happened when we created ‘apple volcanoes’ using vinegar and bicarbonate of soda.

We had fantastic fun with our group challenge to build a strong tower to support an apple. One group was so successful with their design that it actually supported seven apples !!

Spelling Carousel

Today Primary 5 were completing a carousel for their spelling words. Their tasks were:

Make the word with playdoh

Make the word with string

Write the word in chalk

Trace the word on your partner’s back.

We are now confident that everyone will achieve 12/12 on their spelling check up on Friday !

Butterfly Cycle Song

As our caterpillars continue to grow, this week we decided to write songs explaining the butterfly life cycle.

We then had a ‘Eurovision’ style song contest and the winning song was penned by Cameron. He set his words to the tune of Jingle Bells.

Butterfly Cycle Song

Caterpillar, caterpillar in the tiny egg.

Soon there’ll be a tiny caterpillar, all ready!

To gobble up the milkweed and create a chrysalis,

And he’ll be in that state for weeks, and weeks and weeks.

Then hatching through the chrysalis will be a beautiful butterfly,

It will fly off to go and feeeeeed and lay eggs again and again.

The cycle starts again x 2.

New Recruits !

On Monday a surprise package arrived in the post. We were not sure what it was but we got a big surprise when we opened the box because inside was a tub with five, tiny adorable caterpillars.

We created a lovely new habitat for them and named it Caterpillar Corner. We are responsible to make sure that they are safe and cared for. That night was going to be chilly so we decided to wrap the tub with a cloth to keep the caterpillars warm until we returned the following morning.

We have to be considerate classmates and make sure that it is not too noisy as they are very delicate creatures.

If we take good care of them they will transform into Painted Lady Butterflies. At the moment they are very hungry and are enjoying the nutritious food in their tub. We hope to see them create a chrysalis very soon.

As we observe the life cycle of a butterfly  in our classroom we will continue to develop our knowledge and skills relating to our STEM work.

We have had a class vote and have named our caterpillars:

Lloyd, Bananas, Bebe, Mimi and Cerys.

We shall update you with any changes as they occur.

P5 Presentations

Everyone in Primary 5 has now given a presentation to the class on a topic of their choice. The children selected a diverse range of subjects to share with their friends and we had the opportunity to learn many interesting and amazing new facts.

The children were able to peer assess each other so that everyone has a target to improve their performance for the next presentation.

Well done to everyone and thank you for your hard work.

Primary 5 Presentations

Primary 5 will be preparing presentations on a topic of their choice to share with their classmates. To help them improve in their presentation skills they will be peer assessed and given tips to move forward. We are looking for presenters to engage with their audience, speak clearly, have good body language and be confident in their subject choice.

Our first group of presenters provided us with fascinating facts on Taekwondo, Doug the Pug, Dance and Scotland. After reading their feedback each presenter was able to identify a next step for their development.

Titanic Adventure

img_0636 img_0637 img_0638 img_0639 img_0640

Yesterday we had a great time with Captain Sean who came to our classroom with his Titanic Workshop. First of all, Sean told us all about how the Titanic was built in Belfast. We dressed up in costumes as crew members such as a stewardess, purser, quartermaster, engineer, fireman, gymnasium instructor, wireless operator, lookout and captain. Sean gave us all official job cards that were stamped with a picture of the ship.

Sean let us hold a piece of wood from the bannister of the Titanic’s staircase. He was given it by the grandson of a worker on the Titanic who had kept the offcut. When I touched the piece of wood I felt like I was coming down the staircase on the Titanic.

We were put into groups and then had to design a White Star Line dinner plate for first class, second class and third class. First class were allowed to use unlimited colours but third class could only use four colours.

We then put our costumes on and acted out what happened at the time of the collision. It took 37 seconds from when the lookout spotted the iceberg until it collided with the ship.

Sean then told us about some of the survivors on the Titanic. He was actually very good friends with a few of them and had spoken to them in real life. Sean was at the 100th birthday party for Edith Haisman when she was presented with her father’s gold pocket watch that had been found in the shipwreck.

We also were allowed to hold the name plate from one of the life boats used on the Titanic. The metal plate had the smell of the sea on it, it was very heavy and it said S.S. Titanic.

Sean had an awesome model of the ship from America that he used to show us how the ship finally sank to the ocean floor.

We learned lots of new facts about The Titanic and would recommend the workshop. We would love to participate again.

P5 STEM – Germination

img_0587 img_0586

Today Primary 5 were learning all about seed germination. We discussed the necessary conditions that a seed requires to grow and what would happen if any of these key elements were missing.

We then prepared the pots with soil ready to make a cosy wee bed for our tomato seed to grow in. We learned some new vocabulary too:

  • seed coat
  • germination
  • nutrients
  • photosynthesis

We are quite excited about the prospect of growing our own tomatoes and enjoying them on a sandwich. Some pupils who don’t even like tomatoes said they would give them a taste if we are successful in growing a crop. We will keep you updated with the process.

Primary 5 used lots of different materials and their imagination to build fabulous Titanic models as part of their STEM homework.

On Friday morning the ships docked in our classrooms ready for the sink or swim challenge. We tested the ships to find out how buoyant they were with much success.

Well done Primary 5 ! Your ship building skills are awesome !  Continue reading Primary 5 STEM – Testing Titanic

P5 STEM – Candy Cane Science

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OMx7xhxu70

Today Primary 5 made some scientific investigations using candy canes. First of all we placed one candy cane in a cup of cold water. We made a hypothesis regarding what would happen within 5 minutes and recorded our observations during that time frame. We repeated the experiment using warm water and then again using oil. We were interested to find out if our predictions would be correct. Then we watched a short clip showing the manufacture of a candy cane. Finally we were then able to draw our conclusions based on the information about the ingredients as to why the candy cane dissolved in water.

Several children were keen to repeat this experiment at home using different solutions such as milk, fizzy juice, vinegar and fruit juice. I wonder what will happen ?

Sinterklass Parcel

img_0204 img_0206 img_0205 img_0203

Primary 5 have been studying the traditions of Christmas in various countries around the world.

Last week we were learning about Sinterklass and Zwarte Piet and the traditions linked to his arrival in the Netherlands.

Like the Dutch children P5 made little paper shoes and left them out overnight on the 5th December hoping for a little treat from Sinterklass. He didn’t disappoint us and the following morning our shoes had been filled with a few sweet treats. We also realised that Messy Piet had paid us a visit and piled up all our gym shoes and made them into a Christmas tree complete with tinsel and lights !

Today a parcel arrived with lots of Sinterklass goodies from Mrs Verhoef in Rotterdam. The children were delighted to open up the parcels which had been wrapped in special Sinterklass paper. We were able to experience a Dutch celebration in our classroom.

Sinterklass is St Nicholas, who is the patron saint of our school.

FAST Launch at St Nicholas Primary

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmsZgnK7oxk

St Nicholas Primary have been given a wonderful opportunity to host FAST sessions at our school. The programme was developed by Middlesex University and is funded by Save the Children.

The FAST programme runs after school for 8 weeks.  The weekly sessions are 2.5 hours long where a series of structured family activities take place including; communication, listening, turn taking, community building, meal sharing and relationship building.  These are key techniques to help build stronger families.

Our programme will run every Tuesday from 3.30pm until 6pm, starting on  Tuesday 17th January 2017 and our final session will be on Tuesday 14th March.

On this occasion we are offering the programme to children who are in their pre-school year at Nursery or in Primary 1. We have places for 20 families to participate.

The video link above will give you a flavour of how the programme works. Our FAST team members are also delivering a short presentation at the Nativity performances this week.

An information leaflet and invitation will be sent home soon to the pre-schoolers and Primary 1 pupils. We hope you can join us in the New Year.

Oh Deer !

At this time of year there is a lot of chat about reindeers. Primary 5 used oil pastels to create beautiful portraits of some native fawns in Scottish woodland.

We paid close attention to the detail of the facial features and markings. We are delighted with the results. Don’t you think they look gorgeous ?

P5 STEM – Christmas Cupcakes

img_0167 img_0168

Did you know that baking is a science experiment ? Primary 5 looked at the various aspects of science that are involved in baking.

We discussed the change from a liquid to a solid and the role of the gas produced by the baking powder to make the cake rise.

We also discussed the change that occurs by adding heat at a certain temperature. What would happen if we removed the cakes too quickly ? What would happen if we left the cakes in the machine for too long ?

We also had to consider the consistency of the solutions that we were creating. We had to measure and add the correct amount of each ingredient otherwise the solution would be either too thick or too runny.

Our conclusion ….delicious !

Travelling Gallery

artg img_0059

Did you notice a strange bus parked at the school gates this morning ? St Nicholas pupils were very lucky to experience a visit from the Travelling Gallery with the exhibition called Alt-w Blush Response . Inside the bus we were able to experience several pieces of contemporary art and discuss the meaning and construction of each piece.

Torsten Lauschmann created a painting on a solar panel and we thought that the image may represent people taking photographs with their smartphones at a concert. We were impressed with the fine detail in the wooden model constructed by Charles Young who had studied architecture. We then enjoyed the interactive installation representing the Crinan Canal on the west coast of Scotland and discussed the process of laser etching.

Finally we discovered virtual reality looking through glasses at the apartment design by Dennis and Debbie Club for a tower block in Glasgow.

Thank you to the Travelling Gallery for visiting our school. If you are interested in visiting the bus on their tour please use the link below:

Minute to Win It in P5

img_0062

Primary 5 have been developing their skills in problem solving and team work whilst completing tasks in 60 seconds.

This week our tasks were:

Nose Dive – Moving cotton buds from one location to another using only your nose.

Penny Hose – Retrieving coins from the toes of a pair of tights without getting in a tangle.

Balance Beam – Balancing 5 cubes on the end of a lolly stick without them falling off.

Cracker Face – Moving a cracker from your forehead to your mouth using facial movements.

We have been thinking about the best way to accomplish these tasks in the time frame and have realised the importance of listening, communicating clearly, supporting each other and showing respect. Each week a different person in the group has the role of group leader and they decide how to organise the groups for the tasks.

Looking forward to our next session.

P5 – The Muppets

img_0026 img_0027

In 1976 not only was St Nicholas Primary built in Broxburn but ‘The Muppet Show’ appeared on our TV screens for the very first time.

Primary 5 have been developing their drawing skills by creating life-like portraits of both Kermit and Miss Piggy.

STEM – The Marble Maze

img_0030 img_0029

This week we were working with our partner to design a marble maze. Using limited supplies we had to create a challenging course for our marble to follow without falling off the edge of the plate. Pipe cleaners and lolly sticks were used to create barriers, bridges and launchers.

We managed to use our creativity to design some fun mazes. We love STEM !

P5 Literature Circles

img_0266

After a few weeks of becoming familiar with the various roles required to run our literature circles, on Tuesday we had the launch of our first ever Literature Circle gathering. Each child in the group had a different role to complete and each  group leader made sure that everyone was on task and had the resources that they required. At the end of the session the group leader would peer assess the work and then feedback to the rest of the class.

Here are our thoughts after our first session:

This is a good way to get along with your friends. It was fun to work with the group leader. – Lewis

I think you concentrate more as you have a job to do for your group. – Ava

I really liked it because everyone had a different job to do. I liked being the group leader because it was like I was the teacher. – Rayyan

We can be individuals. – Sophie

It allows us to work together as a group. – Natalia A

It helps your concentration as you have to complete your task. – Aimee

The group leader has to check the content of your work before they give you a traffic light colour. – Thomas

Working as a group can improve our writing. – Patryk

I like how we will get a different job to do every week. – Cameron H

I liked being peer assessed and it helped me to understand the book better. – Esme

Well, after all those positive reviews we are looking forward to our next session on Tuesday.

Remember to complete your reading homework in preparation for the tasks.

Money Talks

p1060981

p1060983

Primary 5 participated in collaborative group work at the end of Money Week to further develop their skills. In our small teams we created menus within a budget, calculated food bills and gave change, worked out word problems involving money and used coins in different ways to pay for items.

Every few minutes we tried a different activity on our money carousel and we had the choice of mild, hot or spicy questions. An enjoyable session for all involved and lovely to see good team work.

A surprise guest !

collage-2016-10-13

Today Primary 5 were startled to hear a Royal fanfare in their classroom. Mary, Queen of Scots arrived in the doorway with a royal wave and granted the class permission to ask her questions relating to her life in Old Edinburgh. Mary shared interesting facts regarding her favourite colour, fashion sense and need for a pomander to cover the foul smells during the 16th century. Primary 5 were not shy when enquiring about her various marriages and just what did happen to Lord Darnley ? There was an awkward silence until Mary explained, in her beautiful French accent, that she was rather annoyed with Lord Darnley as he did murder her friend, David Rizzio.

Do you think that this was a confession ?

Times Table Thursday

IMG_1874

Each Thursday P5 are set different activities to develop their knowledge of the times tables. We have played ‘Beat the Teacher’ to find out who can recite their tables the quickest. Miss Morgan managed the six times table in 11 seconds !! We played multiplication bingo, made multiplication fortune tellers, solved multiplication problems and used online resources to become times tables experts. We had so much fun today with our warm up activity using Mr G’s Musical Maths website. This site provides lyrics and popular soundtracks for times table songs. As the children were keen to practise the songs at home please find the link below.

Robert Burns

P1060639 IMG_1876

Primary 5 have been investigating the life and work of Robert Burns this week. We were very impressed on Monday at our ‘Poetry Recital’ when Finlay was not only able to recite ‘Address to a Haggis’, he was also happy to give us an extract from ‘To a Mouse’. Fabulous work, Finlay!

The children then used luggage tags to create a micro portrait of the bard. We quickly realised that it is quite tricky to add intricate detail to a portrait on a smaller scale. However we applied our growth mindset and were delighted with our finished artworks.

The Shortbread Taste Challenge

P1060640 P1060649 P1060652

This week Primary 5 were busy baking shortbread. They had to weigh out the ingredients and follow the recipe and then add three different flavourings. Once they were baked we then took the ‘Shortbread Taste Challenge’ with our partners. We had to identify the three favours – vanilla, lemon and strawberry. Vanilla was the most popular flavour but everyone agreed that our shortbread tasted delicious.
