Today Primary 5 were learning all about seed germination. We discussed the necessary conditions that a seed requires to grow and what would happen if any of these key elements were missing.

We then prepared the pots with soil ready to make a cosy wee bed for our tomato seed to grow in. We learned some new vocabulary too:

• seed coat
• germination
• nutrients
• photosynthesis

We are quite excited about the prospect of growing our own tomatoes and enjoying them on a sandwich. Some pupils who don’t even like tomatoes said they would give them a taste if we are successful in growing a crop. We will keep you updated with the process.
