Primary 6 15.12.17

We had a very creative start to the week as Primary six constructed different aspects of the nativity story from a variety of recycled materials. Their creations were so successful that we felt we had to invite the rest of the school to see them!

We were privileged to see the dress rehearsals for the nursery and infant classes’ nativities. We thought they were fantastic. Their parents and visitors are in for a treat next week.

Auditions were held for the school talent show next week. Well done to all the acts that entered what a talented bunch we have. We wish the two acts which were selected from primary six the very best of luck.

On Thursday it was our Christmas jumper day and everyone looked very festive and jolly and of course in between all these festivities we continued working hard at multiplication and division!

We had our primary six assembly this morning and it was a great success! There were amazing teamwork skills on display and we are very proud of the hard work and presentation skills of ALL the pupils.

Homework – Spelling Test will take place on Monday and will include words from the last six weeks.

Maths Homework – we would like to remind all pupils that they have maths homework EVERY WEEK. If we do not give out maths homework in the form of worksheet we still expect the pupils to be practising Times Tables, Fact Families, and Number Bonds. We have shown the pupils’ games and activities they can do to practise.

The entire school has been preparing for our St. Andrews Day assembly next week. Primary Six are performing the Burns song, “Your Welcome Wullie Stewart”. The song is about welcoming a dear friend. We have added guitars, drums and other percussion instruments to our ensemble and it is sounding superb.

We had an interactive science session this week, where we made part of the human digestive system! The pupils questioning skills have certainly added to our learning and we have now created a new science section within the classrooms where pupils can write down their ‘Big Science Questions’. Selected pupils then research the answers to the questions and present back to the class. It’s proving to be extremely interesting!

Many pupils have been choosing to do extra work on their European country books during their own time and it is wonderful to see such enthusiasm from them. The children are working hard in class and we have been impressed with the standard of work being produced. Well done Primary Six.

It’s hard to believe that we will be entering the month of December next week, may we remind you that the Primary Six Christmas party is on the afternoon of Monday 4th of December. The children can bring their party clothes to school and change at lunch time.

The school is having a reading day next Wednesday and we would like the children to come dressed as their favourite book character. There will be lots of exciting activities happening in the classroom and the children are getting to design their own library area.

Our Christmas Fair is next Friday and tickets are selling fast. The choir will be singing, Santa will be in attendance and there will be a variety of stalls selling exciting goods. Please come along if you can.

The children have all finished designing their Red Nose on the theme of magical lands for the Red Nose Competition. They worked very hard on them and we have some fantastic designs. The House Captains will judge them next week and we are all very excited to see who will represent Carmondean in the competition.

In writing, the children created posters to advertise our Christmas Fair. Look out for these around the school as they are colourful, eye-catching and full of information. If you have any donations for the Fair they will be gratefully received.

In reading the children are continuing with their non-fiction book on a European country. Lots of interesting facts are being found and thank you to the parents who have shared information with the children. We hope to share these books with the nursery children once they are finished.

We have started to learn our song for the St Andrew’s day assembly. This year the children will be singing ‘Yer welcome Wullie Stewart.’ We are also having musical accompaniment with children playing the guitar, drums and clapping in time with the music. It will sound fabulous!

Thank you to everyone who has donated to Children in Need. The children have been buying wrist bands, badges and colouring sheets all week. They look very restful today in their pyjamas! We are excitedly waiting for the final total raised.

There has been much excitement in primary 6 this week as the children have started their visits to the nursery. On a Monday, Tuesday and Thursday two children from each class visit the nursery at lunch time. Primary 6 have enjoyed playing with the children and interacting with them. On a Thursday P6 will read to the nursery children and talk about the book. We have been practicing asking questions in the classroom!

In Science we have started our new topic-The Body. We are learning all about the major organs in the body, how they work and where they are. We are hoping to carry out some investigations to demonstrate what happens inside our body.

The children have been given reading homework this week –The Rainforest. The children will read the text then find out the meanings of words, decide if information is true/false/don’t know and make up questions. We would prefer the children to use a dictionary to find the meaning of words but if you do not have one your child could borrow one from school or you could use an online dictionary. Please let us know if this is a problem.

The children have been given the opportunity to design a red nose which will be sold as part of Red Nose Day 2019. They are very excited and have been busy designing noses with the theme ‘magical lands’ Next week the children will decide on their final design and draw it. Unfortunately only 3 designs can be entered from each class so the House Captains will decide the winning entries.

This week the children were writing atmospheric poems. They tried to include repetition, adjectives, metaphors, similes and words to create an atmosphere! The end result was a collection of fantastic poems which the children read to each other. We were all very impressed with the hard work put in to writing these poems. Well done everyone!

Our journey around Europe has begun in earnest! Each pupil now has their own country to research with the main aim being to write a factual book on their chosen destination. We will be doing the majority of work for this in class but we would appreciate any information which could be gathered outside of school. If you have any books on European countries which you would be willing to let the class borrow it would be much appreciated. Indeed any text that you think maybe useful would be great, for example travel brochures which contain information on particular countries etc.

Newsletters were handed out this week, detailing the term ahead. As always it is going to be a busy one! We have a St. Andrews assembly to prepare for as well as our own class assembly in December. This will be a school only one with our visitor one taking place in the spring.

We hope everyone enjoyed their October holiday and the stormy weather did not disrupt too many plans.

The children have been working hard this week. In writing they wrote all about their October holiday and what they had been doing. The skills we focused on were correct spelling, starting each sentence with a different word and including adjectives. The children then peer assessed their partner’s story and provided feedback.

We have completed our Topic on the Industrial Revolution and have started Europe. The children will be creating non-fiction books on a European country in the coming weeks. We are excited to learn lots of new facts about our European neighbours.

In Reading we have finished our novel and the children shared a range of emotions about how the story ended. Lots of great discussion took place. Next week the children will be writing a book review about the novel.

After school clubs have started this week. Thank you to all children who have signed up already. There are still spaces in many of the clubs so please ask for an application form if your child is interested in joining a club.

Entrepreneurial juices were flowing this week at our Invention Showcase! The event was a great success due to the hard work of Primary Six. We had many original product ideas, which demonstrated ingenuity, creativity and problem solving skills.

Equally impressive was the quality of the presentations given by the pupils and their enthusiasm for the event has to be admired. Well done Primary Six! Thank you to all our visitors, we are sure you will agree that we have some future Dragons’ Den candidates.

We have completed our first Parents Evening sessions of the year and would like to thank you all for your continued support.

BREAKING NEWS * BREAKING NEWS *

Hot off the press! Carmondean Primary Six were outstanding at the West Lothian Schools cross country event. Carmondean girls secured first, second, third and fourth places and the boys secured first and second. All runners should be extremely proud of their efforts. Our roving reporters and photographers demonstrated great teamwork by supporting our competitors. Well done all!

“Stepping back in time” “Wonderful” “Outstanding location” “Great fun” “Very Educational”

These are just some of the phrases used by the pupils when writing their reviews of our trip to New Lanark. We all felt that the trip helped bring our Industrial Revolution topic to life and the pupils represented our school very well. When participating in the guided tour, our pupils demonstrated knowledge and understanding when answering questions from our tour guides.

We are all looking forward to our invention showcase and with the inventions completed we are now designing promotional posters and information leaflets for our various products.

Our classes have been full of interesting invention chats this week! We are all getting very excited for the inventions show case. Parents and carers are very welcome to view our inventions on Wednesday 11th October from 2pm until 3pm or on Thursday 12th October from 10am until 11am. Please be aware that other classes in the school may be visiting at these times.

In preparation for our trip to New Lanark on Tuesday 3rd October, we have been learning about Robert Owen and in particular his influence on changing the lives of working class people for the better. The children have indicated that they still prefer coming to school to working in a mill!

In Writing the children have used their imaginations this week to create their own versions of the poem The Magic Box by Kit Wright. Various writing techniques were adopted to develop ideas and the results have been outstanding. Such emotional writing Primary Six! You will have an opportunity to read these on Parent’s Evening.

The children have been working hard in PE with Mrs Ferguson on a Wednesday, training for the Cross Country event. Many of the children are showing a talent for running.

The children also participated in a handball taster session on Monday where they were introduced to some of the skills needed to participate in a game.

Having discussed how difficult life was for working class children in the Victorian era, our pupils have decided that doing their chores and completing homework are not that bad after all! One pupil described feeling very lucky and this seemed to be the general consensus throughout primary six ………….perhaps we should increase chores and homework!!

We have been exploring all aspects of Victorian working conditions, particularly focusing on child labour. The pupils have been analysing different sources of information from this time period and discussing which improvements in working laws genuinely helped protect children from such harsh conditions.

The children have been working hard practising for the cross country event and those who have decided not to take part will be attending the event acting as our roaming sports reporters.

Invention ideas are starting to fly around our classrooms, remember the inventor challenge homework is due on Friday 6th October.

As Scottish maths week draws to a close it has inspired Primary Six even further in their quest to develop and use their math skills! We have completed some challenging problem solving exercises this week and the pupils have enjoyed sharing their strategies with each other.
Mathematics is a prerequisite for many careers in today’s global economy but it is also an essential life skill. We encourage you to bring maths in to as many home life tasks as you can. The following list provides links to websites and activities which can help with mathematical learning;

Remember the pupils have been shown various maths games and routines that they can practise at home.

Creativity was palpable in our classrooms this week as the pupils in the midst of creating a contrasting landscape depicting the transformation from an agricultural land to one of industry. Discussions, ideas and artistic flair were in full motion! Our next steps with regards to our topic will be researching inventors and exploring their impact. The pupils have been given an inventor challenge as homework. We will be discussing how to tackle this assignment in more depth next week in class. The completed inventions are due on Friday 6th of October.

Hello,
Yet another busy week in Primary 6, classroom routines are already well established and timetables are underway.

We sent home fact families maths sheets this week. Please keep these at home and use them as a guide to practise times tables and the relationship between multiplication and division. We have shown the pupils a variety of times tables songs available on You Tube. We encourage the pupils to use these at home but strictly with Parent permission!

Our topic this term is the Industrial Revolution and we introduced this to the boys and girls using a clip from the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony as it clearly depicts the change from an agricultural land to one of heavy industry. We are organising a trip to New Lanark and will send home details very soon.

Mr Bruce, one of our music specialists, will be giving the children the opportunity to audition for chanter lessons next week. If your child is interested please discuss this with them as it would mean time out of class if they begin lessons and a lot of practice at home.

We have had a busy second week of term and primary six are quickly establishing their routines and responsibilities as senior pupils of our school. Our class discussions have centred on the principles of SHANARRI and in particular we have focused on respect. We have created some excellent images showing where respect can be found within our school. Primary Six are sending out a clear message to the rest of the school ….”You give it to me and I give it to you, RESPECT”. The next time you visit our small hall, please have a look at our display.
We will be issuing spelling homework next week. Pupils will be given twelve words relating to a specific rule or sound on Monday. They will be expected to complete a spelling activity of their choice and sentences using some of their spelling words . The spelling homework is due on Friday and they will also complete a weekly spelling test.
We have started our class novel and the engagement of the pupils so far has been so positive that the main character has become an extra member of our class! We have started our library visits and the pupils will be given regular opportunities to exchange books.

Hello and welcome to the P6 Blog.

It was great to see everyone back refreshed after the summer holidays. The children look very smart in their school uniforms and the majority of children had a pair of indoor shoes. Please can you ensure your child has a change of shoes especially when the weather is wet.

This week we have had a focus on Rights Respecting Schools and how we can be respectful of everyone. The children have worked hard to write their new class charter and have created a Superhero alter ego to help them understand we have a hero within ourselves.  The children have created comic strips reflecting the articles in their class charter.

The ‘Meet the Teacher’ session is on Wednesday 30th August 4.30pm-5.30pm. Please come along and see all the great work the children have completed already. You will be able to see – Timeline, Word Art Selfie, Biography poems and much more.

The children will work with Ms Fox on a Thursday to create art work. PE will be on a Monday (outdoors) with the class teacher and on a Wednesday (indoors) with Mrs Ferguson. Please ensure your child has suitable clothing and footwear for these sessions especially outdoors.

We look forward to working with you this year to ensure your child has an excellent learning experience. Hopefully we will meet you next Wednesday.

Have a lovely weekend

Mrs Wylie, Mr Shanks, Mrs Tully and Mrs Gilmour

The children have been working very hard in Primary 7 this week.

Congratulations to our group of P7s who attended the Sportshall Athletics and the results mean we are through to the next round. They are now training to attend the Regional Final for Sportshall Athletics on Wednesday 22nd February at Meadowbank Stadium. They will have training on a Monday and a Thursday after school. Good luck, you will do us proud!

The groups are continuing to work on their dance routines. They will also have to think about the audience, costume and lighting. Be prepared for any unusual requests from the children around what they may need.

On Wednesday the school attended the opening ceremony of our new hall. The choir sang beautifully and DCHS mini pipe band played everyone in.

We are continuing to learn the songs for our show Alice the Musical. please help the children learn these words at home. Those with a script should continue to learn their words. We will start practicing the play after the February holiday.

Both classes will be working with Mr Shanks for the next few weeks on Kudo. This will involve designing their own computer game. How exciting!

P7G have their final week of swimming today. This has been a very successful transition block for both classes. Next week all children will need outdoor PE kit on the Friday.

In class the children have been working on their personal project about WW2. They will have to work on this at home. Please continue to send in any artifacts or memories that you may have around this time.

Thank you for your continued support,

Miss Wilson & Mrs Gilmour
