A SNEAK PEEK AT OUR WEEK! p5/6

This week in maths we have been doing a variety of different activities for times table recall …times. We rolled a dice for 2 digits and then rolled once more and then multiplied using the grid method.

We also did some multiplication square challenges to speed up our recall of multiplication facts.

In Literacy we have been working on new reading skills, things like Opener Oracle and Setting Scouter. NEW VOCABULARY ALERT….An Oracle is when you know everything!  Opener Oracle was the task set for us.  We had two groups and the Opener Oracle group was looking through their reading book for adverbs, verbs, adjectives and prepositions at the start of the sentences and it was really fun to do. Setting Scouter helps us to learn more ways to understand what language an author uses to set a scene and ways to create an atmosphere.

We have started our ‘What A Wonderful World Topic’ and spent some time using our reading skills to find out about Space Exploration.  We’ve also been working hard on our Bridges Showcase for our very special ceremony next Friday.

We finished this week with our Children in Need Spotty walk!

We hope you enjoyed our blog.

BLOGGERS THIS WEEK ARE KATIE ANDERSON AND LACHLAN DRENNAN

Shape Experts in P1b

Yesterday in P1 we learned all about 2D and 3D shapes.  We looked at how many sides, corners and faces the shapes have and we enjoyed making shape patterns, using stencils to draw the shapes, playing a shape matching game, building with the 3D shapes and the feely bag game where we had to put our hand in to feel the shape and guess which shape it was!

Out in the structured play area we used the construction to build our own 3D shapes.  Some of us worked on our own, or with a partner and even in a team!  It was so much fun!

We also had fun in the newly opened restaurant in the structured play area.  We served customers, made reservations and cooked up some tasty cuisine!

P1b Update

Last week, P1b were once again working very hard.  We learned the sounds ‘x’ and ‘z’ and made some super foxes and zig-zag crafts.  We are still practising sliding our sounds together to read simple words and keep getting better and better at this!

In maths, some of the boys and girls enjoyed practising their turn taking and counting skills when playing a maths game with Mrs Little.  It was really fun!

During our time in structured play we reinforced our pattern making skills and had lots of fun making patterns in different ways.

Keep up the great work!

Happy Halloween!

This week in P4, we have been learning how to subtract on a blank number line. We do this by taking away the hundreds first, then the tens and finally the units.
On Tuesday, we had lots of fun watching the Panto Cinderella!
“I liked it when Cinderella and Prince Charming kissed’ Daniel T
“I liked it when they got the teachers up dancing” Nicole
We also wrote a scary Halloween story during Big Writing time. On Thursday, we made Halloween pictures by making different shades of colours e.g. light red all the way to dark red. Then when that dried we used the black paint to create a silhouette effect!
Most importantly P4 loved the Halloween party !
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!!

P5/6 – A SNEAK PEEK AT OUR WEEK!

On Tuesday the first day back from the holiday we had a pantomime of ‘Cinderella’. We really enjoyed it. After that we were doing the Harvest alphabet for the harvest assembly on Thursday.  Some people came up with really good ideas. The last thing we did on Tuesday was music with Mrs Drummond. In music we learnt a song for the harvest assembly. We also talked about what are favourite thing was from the pantomime.

On Wednesday the first thing we did was some writing. We were doing personal writing. Some people were writing about our class novel character called Peter from ‘Because of Mr.Terupt’.  Others decided to write about themselves. We were writing about our emotions. In our class novel we are at the top of the ‘story mountain’ which means it the most exciting part! After lunch we were doing maths. We were revising our times tables. We were playing a game for our warm up.  We got given four numbers and we had to find the calculation. For our real maths we were doing a mild challenge and we had to do a calculation crossword. The last thing of the day was philosophy with Mrs Hocknull. We watched a video called ‘The girl and the fox’.

On Thursday in the morning we were doing some drawing for the harvest assembly the P5’s were going to. We had to draw fruit and veg that we harvest. Then the P5s had a practise. Then we had maths. We had a times table challenge. That afternoon p5 went to their cluster Harvest assembly at the Lanthorn centre and shared their Harvest alphabet with the pupils from the other schools.

P5-6 Bloggers this week – Brooke Lockhart and Lachlan Drennan

P3

We made up our own stories about Cinderella. We all made a few changes to the story to make it our own. Some of the changes were: Cinderella was bad, the pumpkin turned into a bull, the pumpkin broke down on the way to the ball and the Prince fell in love with one of the stepsisters. the stories were very imaginative and well written. We have also started learning about our topic Livingston now and then. We also looked at some skills for work. We are going to focus on working independently and time management skills. The school also had a Halloween party last night.

P1b Ready for Term 2!

Before the holidays P1b learned some more new sounds.  We learned d,v and g.  We made dinosaurs and designed our own vests and glasses.

We’ve also been working hard to blend our sounds together to begin to read and spell some simple words.  We are getting really good at it!

Look how good we look in our designer glasses!

In maths, we practised our number formation and have been working on writing our numbers correctly and on counting how many altogether.

In structured play we enjoyed making our own shows using the puppet theatre, we read books to each other and enjoyed playing with the money and pretending we were out shopping.

We loved having all our special visitors in the class during our PATPAL event and enjoyed teaching them what we have been learning about money.  It was great fun and was fantastic to see so many of you coming along to join us.  Thank You.

It’s hard to believe that’s term 1 over – keep up the good work in term 2 P1b!

German Day at JYHS

P7A and P7B made fantastic first impressions at their first transition event at James Young High School on Wednesday. In their teams the pupils had to complete 19 German activities in 60 minutes. Here is some pupil feedback of the day:

“It was fun learning how to speak German.” Sophie.

“I learnt how to say ‘guten Morgen’ which means ‘good morning’ in German.” Dylan.

“ I enjoyed the food tasting activity because it was decent German food.” Abi S.

“ I liked the blind car game. You had to say German words for directions to get to the finish line.” Abbie M.

“I enjoyed the photo booth activity because it was fun to dress up in the costume. I liked walking around and looking at different parts of the school.” Katie

“It was good to see the school so when we move up we know where to go and it was good to work with the S1 pupils because they already know the school.” Chloe B.

“ It was fun trying to find different parts of the school.” Gabriel

Well done to Joshua Davidson and Katie Ford who were both in the winning team that completed the most activities in the time set.
