Amazing Pirate Raft Building !

Miss Rodford was very impressed with our raft building skills this week!

We had to work as a team to design a raft and think about what materials would be good for building a raft that would float. Then we chose different materials and used super team work skills to build the raft!

Finally, we got to predict and test out of our rafts would sink or float!

Have a look at our super pictures!

A visit from Buzzy Bee

P2 had a very exciting start to the week when a box arrived in our classroom from Buzzy Bee. It had lots of objects inside like tomato sauce, beans, flowers and honey. Buzzy taught us about how these objects linked to bees through pollination.

Olivia: ‘pollination is when bees collect nectar from the flowers and the pollen sticks to their fur. Then they go on to another flower and the pollen drops on to the flower and it makes new seeds’.

Here is a picture of us drinking our ‘nectar’ and collecting ‘pollen’ when we landed on our flowers.

We learnt that because there aren’t as many wild flowers as there used to be, bees can’t pollinate as they used to and are becoming endangered.

Ben: ‘Bees are becoming endangered because of habitat destruction’.

P2 decided that we would help bees by planting some new seeds to grow into flowers for the bees to pollinate.

We enjoyed spending time outside with P1, P1/2 and P2/3 this week learning lots of new skills and showed excellent team work on the tyres and trim trail!

Co-operation and Teamwork in P1/2

P1/2 have done themselves proud this week as they were able to talk to our special visitors about their learning with great confidence.

In maths, we worked on finding lots of different ways to make 10.  We used rekenreks, cubes, bead strings, numicon and much more!

We have also been learning how to read and set half past times on analogue clocks.   This has been tricky but we will practise this again next week and will remember that our marvellous mistakes help us learn!  We particularly enjoyed designing and making our own watches with our brilliant parent helper Ms Graham.  Thank You!

During our reading routes work this week we used our question words to make up questions that would help us to find out more about pirate ships.  We came up with some really good questions to help us learn even more!

We were astonished when we received a message from Captain Blackbeard asking for our help! He wants us to make a raft to help him to get back to his ship so we wrote back to say we will help him.

As we continue to work through our pirate topic, we had fun again out in the structured play area.  We enjoyed dressing up as pirates, playing with the small pirate ships, hunting for tricky word treasure, building a pirate ship/treasure chest with the lego and lots more!

Thanks also to Chloe’s gran who came in to read to the boys and girls again this week.  We love having your in our classroom.

Finally, we enjoyed the lovely weather yesterday by spending lots of time practising our co-operation and kindness values as we played and helped each other outside. It was so much fun!

We played on the new trim trail.

We enjoyed starting our Bankton marathon and completed our first half mile!

We had fun on the tyre park.

We also enjoyed reading in the sun with the new comfy cushions!  It was the best day ever!

Keep up the good work!

Want to be the next Andy Murray? Here’s your chance right here at JYHS – Thursday 27th April!

‘Tennis on the Road Programme’  aims to inspire coaches, children and parents to get involved in and stay in tennis. This exciting event is taking place at The James Young H.S on Thursday 27th April!  This will be led by Judy Murray who will also be present at the event. Judy’s innovative coaching style and content gives everyone involved a great introduction into the basics of tennis in a fun and engaging way that in no time at all helps them to master the fundamentals of what can at times be seen as a complicated sport to play.

This is a fantastic opportunity for parents and children to come together and learn the game using Judy’s unique style. Please see the poster attached below for the parent and child (5-10 yrs old) session taking place from 3.30-5.00pm and contact details to book on!

Spaces are limited and are allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Arrrr Pirates!

Primary One found a special treasure chest in the playground! It was full of coins and a treasure map!  We thought that it might be from a Pirate!

In maths we were thinking about ways to make 8 and we have also been working on sharing objects out equally between two groups.

In Literacy, we have been revising our vowel house sounds and we have been impressing Miss Rodford with our reading skills.

In Science, we thought about animals which lay eggs.

Lunchtime Charter

The RRS group have been busy over the pat few weeks creating a Lunch time Charter. We onducted a survery and found out that the lunch hall could be very noisy and we were wasting alot of food.

So we created a charter to give some rules to how we act and our responsiblities in the lunch hall. We also have rewards for children who follow the charter and they will get a lunchpass for the courtyard! Hopefully this will make the lunchhall a quieter and less wasteful place!

April’s Right of the Month

April’s Right of the Month is ……

Article 42
You have the right to know your rights!
Adults should know about these rights and
help you learn about them, too.

UNICEF believe that children and young people are to become responsible citizens, they need the chance to participate in the world around them.

If they are denied the right to take part in their community, they will struggle to learn how to become responsible members of that community as adults.

Adults should teach and inform children of their rights.

At home, see if you can teach your family abit about the rights!

Can you name some rights?

Can you talk about why they are important?

Here is a video with abit of the history of Children’s Rights

Chocolate Eggstravaganza Assembly

Thanks to everyone who came along to take part in the P4 and P4/5 Easter Assembly. In the story were songs, acting and most important of all great messages for everyone to hear about for Easter- being kind to each other, respect and sharing. The children were amazing and put on a terrific performance. We hope that everyone has a fantastic Easter holiday.

What’s the time Mr Wolf !!

This week, Primary one have been learning all about how to tell o’clock times! We have also been learning learning how to match the analogue time to the digital time! We really enjoyed playing What’s the time Mr Wolf and making different times on our small clocks!

Primary One also surprised Miss Rodford with their super subtraction !! We learnt that when we write a take away sum the biggest number goes first. We loved using the dice to make subtraction sums.

We have also been busy learning about rhyming words! We read the story of ‘The cat in the hat’ and had to think of words that rhyme with cat ! We then made super cat in the hat pictures!!!

Super Work Primary One!!!
