Superstars in P1/2

Another busy week in P1/2.  In literacy this week we learned some new sounds – z, ee and oo.  We worked on reading and writing these sounds and on forming our sounds correctly in handwriting.  We are getting better at blending the sounds to read and make words and will continue to work on this next week.

We have been practising transferring our phonics skills to our writing work and have produced some super stories related to the story ‘Shark in the Park’.  We imagined that we were in the park with a telescope and wrote about what we could see.  We have been trying hard to include a capital letter, full stop and clear finger spaces and we managed lots of sounding out on our own this week.  Get ready to be impressed!

Last week the children learned the sound ‘g’.  To help us remember the sound all of the children designed their own pair of glasses and modelled them as they left school today.  Looking good P1/2!!

In maths we have been practising counting groups carefully so that we can work out how many there are all together.  We have also been trying very very hard to form our numbers correctly and the right way round.

We also took part in some outdoor maths where we collected and then recorded how many different coloured leaves we found in the playground.  We were able to lay out the leaves in a graph and talk about the most popular and least popular leaf colour.  We found that there were fewest red leaves and that the brown leaves were very popular!

In our topic work we have had some in-depth conversations about toys.  We sorted a basket of items under the headings toys and not toys and we disagreed politely over the iPad as some people thought it was a toy because you can play games on it, while others thought it was not a toy because you had to pay for apps and type in a password to use it.  Great ideas and discussion which we have recorded in our class floorbook.

Finally, thank you to all the parents who have already been working hard to help the children learn their lines for the nativity.  We were so impressed this afternoon to hear quite a few children say their words without any help!  Keep up the good work boys and girls and parents – please leave us some feedback!  We would love to hear what you think about our work!

Super Sounding Out and Marvellous Maths in P1/2

P1/2 have been using their sounds this week to try to sound out words.  They have been repeating the word a few times before trying to work out the first, middle then end sound.  They are getting really good at it!

In maths, we have been working on forming and sequencing our numbers correctly and have been practising estimating how many objects we can see.  We managed some good estimates and could spot when our estimates were much too high or much too low!

We were also very lucky to have a MoneySense workshop this week where a member of staff from the Royal Bank of Scotland came to work with us.  Miss Graham also kindly helped us out as we moved round three different activities and explored how we use money.

We finished off our busy week with some fun in the structured play area.  We enjoyed lots of activities including dressing up, building with construction materials, being creative at the art table and playing a healthy foods game with Miss Campbell.

Enjoy the holiday boys and girls, you deserve a break after all your hard work this term. I look forward to seeing you all again next term for more fun filled learning!

Chefs in P1a and P1/2!

Huge thanks go to Miss Campbell who showed off her cooking skills today when she worked with some children from P1a and P1/2 to prepare the vegetables that we harvested last week to make a delicious pot of soup.  The children did really well chopping and grating the vegetables and thoroughly enjoyed tasting the delicious soup.  One pupil did describe the soup as being better than gran’s carrot soup however we did advise her not to say that to gran!!  Well done boys and girls – great work!

Another Funfilled Week in P1/2

Where to start!

This week we enjoyed some good weather and went outside for our daily mile.  The children walked well and showed good stamina.

In maths we have learned lots of different things.  We have been working on recognising and sorting the coins to £2.

We have been revising 2D shapes and have been thinking about their properties.

We have also been working hard on forming our numbers correctly and on sequencing the numbers in the right order.  We are getting better at this!

We are also working on reading and writing the number names and are beginning to be able to sound out some of the words.

As well as all this maths we were also working on our sounds.  We have begun using the colourful consonants mouth parts to spell out words and are continuing to practise forming our sounds correctly.

Keep up the good work Primary 1/2 and keep up the good growth mindset – keep thinking I can’t do it …….yet!!

Harvesting in P1/2

This week in our topic work we were learning all about harvest.  We learned about the sequence of events that farmers go through to harvest their crops and even had a go at harvesting and digging up some vegetables from the vegetable patch in school.  It was great fun and we managed to harvest some very small carrots and some huge potatoes!  Miss Cambell helped us and she has offered to work with us next week to make some tasty vegetable soup.  We are really looking forward to this.  Thank you Miss Campbell.

Busy Bees in P1/2

This week in literacy P1/2 have explored the vowel house story and have been practising putting the pictures into the right order.  The vowel sounds are black because they are tunnel sounds and you have to open your mouth really wide like a tunnel to say them properly.  Parents – please have a look in the useful documents section of the blog for details of the story so that you can join in and support your child.

We have also began to use the mouth part boards to begin to sound out some words and to spell them using the mouth parts.  Mrs Lloyd was very impressed!

In maths, we have been enjoying our number talks and are continuing to work on our hand signals and on explaining how we worked out our answers.  We have been looking at ten frames and dot patterns and are continuing to work on finger patterns and counting accurately.

In our topic work we have began to learn about harvest.  We had a look at the market garden in school and saw some of the vegetables that are growing at Bankton including carrots, parsnips and potatoes.  Next week, we are looking forward to working with Miss Campbell to get digging and to harvest some of the vegetables.

P1/2 Go Dotty!

Today, P1/2 read Ten Black Dots by Donald Crews.  The children then worked independently to choose the number of black dots that they wanted to use in their pictures and then created a masterpiece around their dots.  We were all very impressed and enjoyed looking at all the pieces of work and talking about how many dots had been used.  Let us know what you think – try leaving us a comment!

Wonderful Workers in P1/2

Well done to all the children in P1/2 who have been working very hard this week.  In maths, we have been working on patterns and have tried to complete some patterns as well as creating our own.  Take a look!

We have also been trying hard to work out one more and one less, we have explored spot patterns and ten frames and have practised counting carefully to ten.  Mrs Lloyd thinks we are getting really good at this!

We enjoyed our weekly visit to the school library where we choose a book to take home and looked for some of the sounds that we’ve been learning inside our books.  We found loads!  P1/2 go to the library every Thursday so please try to remember to bring your book back on this day so that you can swap it for a new one

Enjoy your weekend boys and girls – more fun learning coming your way next week!
