Perseverance in P1/2!!

Another busy week in P1/2.  This week we have been working on our growth mindset and have been talking about our brains and how they grow when we are learning.  We know that making ‘marvellous mistakes’ is good as mistakes help us to learn.

In maths this week we have been practising adding money and buying items in Mrs Lloyd’s shop – ‘Lloyd’s Local!’.  We have also been learning the addition and subtraction number stories of 2 and 3 e.g. 2+1 =3, 3-2 =1. We have been thinking about different strategies and have been using these to complete our work e.g. using number lines, our fingers and cubes.

In literacy, we gave out reading books and the boys and girls have been very excited about taking these home to read with their families! P1/2 are really looking forward to their families coming in to see our reading work on Tuesday!! We also started our reading routes work this week where we work in groups to complete different reading tasks.  We predicted what a story might be about using the illustration on the front cover as a clue.  Some of the children managed to predict correctly and everyone worked well in their groups.  In sounds we have been building sentences on our velcro boards and have been practising blending our sounds together to read and find words.  We have also been working on generating rhyming words from some stories that we have read.  How many words can you think of that rhyme with _og?

After finding a letter and footprints in our class last week we wrote a letter to Sir Helpalot to tell him that we want to help him rebuild Fairyland and his castle and have worked hard to make leaves to help build a beanstalk for Jack.  The beanstalk is up but we are hoping the giant does not make any surprise appearances in our classroom!

Finally, P1/2 were the winners of the Goblet of Good Manners trophy today and were so proud of themselves for showing everyone their good manners all week.

Keep up the good work boys and girls and remember to persevere and not give up when you are finding things a little bit tricky!

Strange Goings on in P1/2!

P1/2 were shocked to find some big glittery footprints in the classroom on Tuesday. We also found a letter which turned out to be from Sir Helpalot – a knight who used to live in Fairyland before it disappeared.  Sir Helpalot has asked us to help him to save Fairyland by learning more about the stories and characters from various fairytales.  We are going to write back to him to tell him that we will help and are looking forward to reading lots of fairytales.

In maths, we have been revising how to add and subtract within 10. We have also been practising our doubling skills and used bingo dabbers to make spots and double the amount.  We have been looking at the different coins and have been learning how to pay for items using different coins and different amounts.

In literacy, we have been continuing to work on blending our sounds together to read words and have been working hard in our reading groups.

Well done boys and girls!  Keep up the good work!

Happy New Year!

P1/2 have settled back into school life really well this week.  We have been working hard already and are enjoying sitting in our new carpet spots!

On Wednesday, we enjoyed some time in the structured play area using construction materials, reading books in the library corner, exploring emotion works faces, doing jigsaws, drawing and loads more!!

In maths we learned about doubling numbers.  We used playdough and doubled the petals on the flowers, we threw a dice and doubled the number to make an addition sum, we fished for a number using the fishing rod and doubled it when we caught it and we searched through tubs of dominoes to find the ones with doubles on it.  We really impressed Mrs Lloyd!

In literacy, we learned the ‘igh’ sound and tried using it to help us spell some words.  We also used the fly swatter to swat some action flashcards to help us learn to read these tricky words.  It was really fun!

Looking forward to next week already!

Partytastic in P1/2!!

Well done to all the boys and girls from P1 and P1/2 for a fantastic party yesterday.  Everyone looked so smart and behaved so well.  All of the children joined in really well and showed off their funky moves and good manners!  It was great fun and we even had a special visitor!  Well done everyone.

A very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Mrs Lloyd and P1/2!

P1/2 Go Back in Time …………..

P1/2 started the week off with some emotions work.  We spoke about what makes us happy and sad and even tried making some happy and sad faces.  After that, we tried hard to think of other feelings words that mean the same and are beginning to get better at this.

We have been practising our coin recognition and even shopped in Mrs Lloyd’s shop for some tasty foods!  We had to take the right coins out of our purses so that we could pay for the items!

As well as learning about money, we worked independently to practise our adding and take away skills.

In literacy we learned the ‘qu’ sound and practised all of our sounds learned so far alongside our tricky action words.  We have been practising blending our sounds together to make words and remembered that the black sound should be in the middle!

Thank you to Miss Graham who helped us with a special painting job last week.  This week we decorated our painted works of art.  Keep a look out for these fantastic masterpieces making their way home soon!

In topic work, we have been learning about some of the similarities and differences between toys now and toys from long ago.  We looked at some pictures online and had a great discussion about all different sorts of toys and we even pretended to go back in time in our time machine to look at some toys from long ago!  We sorted out some different toys in the classroom into old and new toys.  It was really fun!

Finally, a couple of weeks ago Mrs Stewart set all the teachers a special challenge.  We were all given a gift of an item from the poundshop which we had to include in one of our lessons before Christmas.  P1/2 received a folding box!

Above is what is used to look like because now……………….

…….we’ve turned the box into a stable and used it to explore the nativity story and to make our very own nativity scene.  We started off by brainstorming what people would need to be included then thought about the materials that we would need to make it before we all worked together to choose a part to make.  Well done P1/2 – another brilliant week.  Keep up the good work!

P1/2 Performed last week!!

Last week P1/2 worked hard in all areas of the curriculum.  In maths we continued to work on our addition and subtraction and on looking carefully at the signs in sums!  We practised taking away zero and trying not to let the sums confuse us!

In literacy we learned some new sounds wh, j and y.  We listened carefully to words and tried to build them on our vecro boards and also practised reading words using our blending skills to sound them out!

As part of our emotion works, we watched the ‘very’ advert where the little girl gives out gifts to people who are sad or lonely.  We watched the advert and thought about how some of the people in it might be feeling and then made some boxes of happiness to give to our families when they are feeling a bit sad. We drew pictures of things that would cheer them up and came up with lots of great ideas including photos, love hearts, teddies, cameras, flowers, chocolates, puppies and books!

Finally a big well done to all the classes involved in the nativity.  Everyone sang their socks off (especially the P3 choir!) and the P2 narrators spoke very clearly into the microphones which helped the primary ones know when they had to come onto the stage and when they had to say their lines.  A big thank you to the support staff who helped out with the costumes and with the backdrop – your help is much appreciated.  Well done primary one for your super nativity performance and a big thank you to all the parents and family members who were able to come along and be a super audience.  Looking good!

Brilliant Book Week!

This week in maths, Primary 1/2 have been practising their adding skills independently whilst learning about subtraction at the teach table.  The boys and girls know that subtract means to take away and have even learned another word for subtract – minus.  We made minus monsters out of the subtract sign and are trying not to get muddled up between add, subtract and equals signs!  We have been using cubes to help us to take away and are getting quite good at it!

In sounds, we have been learning the ‘oa’, ‘ng’ and ‘w’ sounds – ‘oa’ lives in the vowel house and you need a tunnel mouth to say it properly, ‘ng’ is an orange sound made at the back of your mouth and ‘w’ is a loud red sound made with your lips.  We have been working on our blending skills by playing bingo and sounding out words using the racing car tracks and stretchy snake to help us blend the sounds together and read the words.

In topic work we looked at some different toys and thought about what materials they were made of.  We felt the toys and discussed how they felt and what we thought they were made of.  We spotted these materials – wood, plastic, metal, foam and fabric.  100_8145Thank you to all the parents and grandparents who were able to make it along on Friday to receive their Book Bug Bags and to see the children working on different literacy and numeracy activities related to the books for Scottish book week.  We really enjoyed having you there to help and to be able to share our favourite stories from the bags with you.  I hope you all enjoy reading the stories and using your magnetic numbers at home.

Looking forward to more fun next week Primary 1/2.  Well done everyone!

Book week in P2

For book week, P2 have been reading ‘Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam’ and ‘Marshall Armstrong is new to our school’.

  • Daniel G: ‘Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam are robbers who get a new job and open a café’.
  • Caleb: ‘I learnt that you have to always do your best and don’t ever steal or sneak into someone else’s house’.
  • Nathan C: ‘I think the Marshall Armstrong book is very good. I learnt that Marshall Armstrong’s friends have been not nice to him at the start. Then they are nice at the end and had a party that they enjoyed together’.
  • Lauren: ‘My favourite activity from book week was making a new job for Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam’.
  • Fraser: ‘My favourite activity was when we designed our own cake for Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam’s cake shop’

We loved having the P2 adults in class to tell them all about our book week activities. We are so excited to bring our book bags home today to show our adults our brand new books and activities to do at home.

Wonderful Work in Primary 1/2

P1/2 have worked very hard this week on counting groups of objects and then adding them together.  We can recognise the add and equals sign and have been learning how to write addition sums.  We have been practising locking the big number in our head to help us count on to quickly find the answer e.g. 5+3 – we lock the 5 in our heads and then count on 6,7,8.  We are getting better at this!

In literacy, we have been busy learning the r, l and ai sounds!  Here is a little clip of us singing along to the ai song.  We hope that you enjoy it!

To help us with blending our sounds to read words we have played some fun games at the teach table this week.  We played a fun game called ‘Win it or Bin it!’ where we rolled three dice to make a word.  We then sounded out our word and decided if it was not a real word we would bin it and if it was a real word we would win it!  It was fun and we made up some funny nonsense words!  We also played BOOM where we picked words out of a bag and used our blending skills to try and read the word.  If someone picked out a BOOM card the game blew up and was over.  The winner was the person or persons with the most cards.  We have also been working on forming all of our letters correctly.

On Thursday, we all dressed up in yellow or something spotty and made a donation to help raise money for Children in Need.  Well done!
