My First Book Of Birds

The last book in the P1 Book Bug bag is a fact book all about birds.

Each double page has a beautiful picture of a bird we might find in our local area and gives information about the birds appearance, diet and habitat. P1 are very excited to do some bird watching.

We loved the pictures in the book and decided to draw our own colourful birds using chalk and oil pastels.

This is a Dog!

The second book in the P1 book bag is My First Animal Book …..This is a Dog by Ross Collins.

The dog decides he would like the book to only be about him which does not please the other animals! The  dog manages to get onto every page and then tricks the rest of the animals to leave the book!

We thought the dog was very cheeky and found it very funny when he tricked the other animals.

We drew some new pages that could be added to the book.

Book Bug Bags

This week Primary 1 will bring  home their Book Bug Bags that are given to them by the Scottish Book Trust. In each bag there are three super books to read and enjoy together. There is also a mini whiteboard to practise letters and numbers on.

Today we read one of the books called Brenda is a Sheep by Morag Hood.

This is the story of how a wolf plans to eat a flock of sheep but ends up deciding that it would be nicer to be their friend.

We talked about what we enjoyed about the book and designed our own woolly jumpers for Brenda to wear.

Qu is for Quack

Our new sound in primary 1 is qu as in quack, queen, quick and quiet.       We shared a story called The Quest  and the Alphablocks taught us about q and u working together. We made a quacking duck to take home to help us learn our new sound.

Remembrance

It’s been a busy few days in P2/1. We’ve been learning about Remembrance and why we all wear poppies. Yesterday we did a great job making our own poppies to hang in our windows. Today we watched a short video about the effect the First World War had on animals and it inspired our own pictures and writing.  At 11am we sat quietly to remember those who have lost their lives fighting in the various conflicts and those serving in the Armed Forces today. We all enjoyed listening to Mr Johnstone and Archie play the pipes.

Also this week we revisited the pictures we took six weeks ago of the trees around the school field. We knew the leaves had changed colour and were falling but we were quite amazed at the difference (photos by Daniel, Noah and Amber). We also did an autumnal scavenger hunt, looking for something autumnal that makes a noise and evidence of wildlife around the playground.

Our new phonics sound on on Monday was ‘x’. We had fun making x-rays of our hands and writing real and nonsense ‘x’ words.

Have a good long weekend and we’ll see you on Monday!

Remembrance Day

Everyone in school this week has been  learning about Remembrance Day. We have talked about the poppies that grew up in the muddy battlefields of World War 1 and how they help us to remember all the brave men and woman in the forces today, and in the past who have helped to keep us safe.

For Remembrance Day  we have all made a poppy to put up in our windows and we will be observing a minutes silence, at 11am on the 11th November.
