Room 15 – Moon Dust

As part of our 1960’s topic, Room 15 have been learning about the 1969 moon landing. Today, we learned about reglioth (aka… Moon Dust!)

To mimic the formation of moon dust on the moon’s surface we used meteorites (rocks), collected from outside, and collided them with the moon rock (sugar cubes) in a paper cup. The results showed that when meteorites collide with rocks on the moon, sharp and sticky regolith is formed. Moon dust sticks to surfaces as it is electrically charged… but our sugar was just sticky!

🦺 Be Bright Day and Wow Challenge Update

The WOW ambassadors would like to say a huge well done to all 443 pupils who earned a badge at the end of October. We are so happy that so many of the pupils at the school are able to make active/more sustainable journeys to school and we love being able to hand out the badges. We’d love to hand out even more badges at the end of November and December and hope that families will continue to travel actively into the darker months, by wrapping up warm in waterproof clothing and dressing brightly.

From your WOW Ambassadors:

Pippa, Melissa M, Melissa B, George, Robbie, Mariyah, Eva, Gemma, Emily & Maya

Speaking of dressing brightly, we will be holding our annual Be Bright Day on Friday 24th November. This is to raise awareness for staying ‘safe and seen’ now that the mornings, nights (and afternoons!) are getting darker. We will be talking to all pupils about staying safe and seen on their journeys to/from school at their assemblies during Road Safety Week (20-24th November).

For our Be Bright Day, pupils should wear the brightest clothes that they have and this can include reflective items. The clothes don’t even need to match! The wackier & brighter the better as we are holding a competition for the best and brightest dressed pupils from each class. The winners will win some ‘Be Bright’ goodies and a certificate.

We can’t wait to see you all ‘wearing it bright!’

Gymnastics in Room 2

We have lots of aspiring gymnasts in Room 2. In our P.E. lessons we have been developing different aspects of our gymnastics like travelling and balancing.

“We had to balance walking across the bench, I put my arms out to help me.” E

“We stopped at the end of the bench before we jumped. We need to bend our knees.” M

“We practised a tuck jump, a star jump and a straight jump.” S

“We need to bend our knees when we land.” A

“We had to do a big finish when we jumped.” A

Have a look at some action shots below.

Busy bees!

Over the past week, Room 6 have been so busy, even with the excitement of Halloween and Fireworks night.

We have been continuing to develop our knowledge of different phonemes and the sounds they make in spelling, having moved on to the ‘aw’ phoneme this week. We have also been working hard to recognise both common and tricky words in a text as well as building fluency using our weekly reading book. This week we have really enjoyed concentrating on our allocated Bug Club book and have been working in groups to develop our understanding of this.

In Numeracy, we have now completed our ‘Numbers to 100’ topic but will continue to revisit these processes to support overall understanding. We were keen to move on to ‘Addition’ and have started consolidating addition to 10. We have been making use of different strategies to help us, such as counting using our fingers, cubes and number lines.

We are reaching the end of our Katie Morag topic and last week’s lesson concentrated on comparing a busy city with the quiet countryside. We had a super discussion about what can be found in a city and what can be found in the countryside. We then had a chat about how a busy city on the mainland could relate to our lives while a quiet life in the countryside may be similar to Katie Morag’s environment. To support our learning, we completed a sorting activity, where we identified what facilities, transport and natural features might be found in an urban or more rural area. We are looking forward to comparing our school with a school on the Isle of Coll tomorrow.

Here are some comments below made about our learning over the past week:

QO – I have enjoyed starting to learn about addition because it is fun.

ND – I enjoyed doing Katie Morag when we did a cut and stick about what you can find in a city and what you can find in the countryside.

HG – I liked learning our new common words and dong speed writing and desk writing.

OM – I liked learning to count to 10 in French.

AS – I liked working on my reading book this week.

SJ – I liked learning about 3D shapes.

HH – I liked learning about positive and negative risks and how we can stay safe.

Have a lovely week!

The 2 H’s – Hieroglyphics & Harvest!

This week Room 13 have been finishing off their Egyptian Cartouches.
A cartouche is a fancy Egyptian frame in which people would draw or carve their names in hieroglyphics.
Have a look at some of our designs – can you guess who they belong to?
HINT – Egyptians did not believe in double letters and they also would spell names phonetically. For example:
Finn – Fin
Sophie – Sofe
Kaylah – Kala

Also, to round off the season of Harvest, Room 13 have been reflecting on their lives and sharing what they are truly thankful for. Here are some of the answers:
LH – I am thankful for my family and my bunny.
TW – I am thankful for my dog Bruno.
CB – I am thankful for my Grampa and my Mummy.
EG – I am thankful for Raf – my comfort toy.
AW – I am thankful for my little sister and gymnastics.
AA – I am thankful for all the flowers.
SMc – I am thankful for my special love heart pillow.
HC – I am thankful for my cat Ginny.

Room 26

We have had a very busy time in room 26 recently.

In Numeracy, we have been working on our written addition. Assuring we have the correct layout to help us what carrying over.

In reading, we have been continuing to develop our fluency when reading aloud and using the different reading strategies to improve our understanding of the text being read.

We have been working hard on our 500 word story competition entries in writing, trying very hard to engage our audience.

We created sugar skulls using oil pastels after learning about dia de los muertos. These turned out amazing 🙂

Finally, we have started our Natural Disasters topic and have been enjoying learning about how tornadoes are formed and the impact these can have to peoples lives and the environment!
