This week in the Pine Room we have been celebrating Chinese New Year.  We painted fans, decorating them with Tigers, and made Dragons with long colourful tissue paper tails. We watched exciting videos of dancing Chinese Dragons and listened to some tranquil Chinese music. In cookery we made our version of fruit sushi (we know that is Japanese – but oh well!!)

Chinese New Year and Scottish Landmarks

This week has been very busy in the Comets class. We started the week looking at Chinese New Year and made our own Chinese lanterns. The Comets also wrote their own names in Chinese by looking at a Chinese alphabet and picking out the letters of their names. We worked on numbers and did some Chinese sums. The comets enjoyed looking at videos about Chinese New Year and how it is celebrated around the world.

We then looked at the Kelpies. The comets enjoyed watching videos and looking at pictures of the kelpies and how they were made. They liked the story of the Kelpies. We then made our own Kelpies with different coloured tissue paper and black card. We then had the challenge of coming up with our own mystical creature using salt dough. The comets made the salt dough by themselves and measured out all the ingredients. We then made out creatures and will paint them next week when they are dry.

We made our own jam sandwiches/toast. The comets spread the jam and then made themselves a cup of tea to go with their food. The sandwiches and tea were a hit.

This week we have been going over some life skills. The comets worked together to wash and dry dishes, sweep the floor and wipe down the tables. Comets did really well with these life skills and worked together very well.

CHINESE NEW YEAR 2022

*Responsible Citizens* *Successful Learners*

This week we have been learning about the traditions and celebrations of Chinese New Year. We listened to different styles of music and made our own fans to try the traditional Chinese Fan Dance. We also spent some time cleaning our classroom to clear out the bad luck and start the new year fresh. We then experienced using Chopsticks, which was quite the challenge! We finished off the week with a Dancing Noodles science experiment.

FAOL Science – Recycled Musical Instruments

The Asteroids explored percussion instruments on Monday. We were shaking and hitting our instruments and testing to see whether they had a hard or soft sound or a loud or quiet sound. We all chose an instrument to play along with music on the board.

After that, we each chose a recycled container to make our own percussion instruments. We experimented with the sounds the different ‘noise makers’ made (lentils, rice, popcorn, cheerios, etc) and whether they were soft, hard, loud or quiet, then we chose which ‘noise maker’ we wanted to fill our own containers.

We had a great time investigating and making lots of noise!

Chinese New Year

*Successful Learners   *Effective Contributors   *Confident Individuals

We enjoyed a variety of activities for Chinese New Year. We learnt how the calendar is names after animals, made fruit fireworks with apples depicting peace and tangerines depicting good fortune. We tried using chopsticks and opened fortune cookies. We had fun making fans and dusted the classroom to clean it for New Year. We created Dragon Kites which flew well in the wind.

SOC 0-09a – Theme – Edinburgh Garden Map

Effective Contributors

Whilst learning about Edinburgh, the Sunflower’s enjoyed following a visual map of the garden to find famous Edinburgh landmarks they have been learning about.   Each child used the map to locate the pictures in the garden and went on a hunt as a team to find them.

IDL: LGBT Month

*Responsible Citizens*

We are celebrating the LGBT+ community this February.  Today we read a story called ‘Red:  A Crayon’s Story’ which was all about a blue crayon who was wearing a red cover by mistake.  Everyone expected the crayon to colour in red but it couldn’t make itself be red no matter how hard it tried.  It taught us to always be the person we feel inside no matter what label we are given.

We found all our class crayons and ripped off their labels to ‘set them free’ then melted some crayons to make a piece of art work showing all the true colours of every crayon as they mixed together.

IDL: Outdoor Learning

*Confident Individuals*

As part of our school’s ’50 things to do outdoors’ initiative, we embraced the winter cold today to feel the earth on our barefeet!  It was lots of fun and we enjoyed trying to think of adjectives to help describe all the things we could feel on our feet.

Chinese New Year

We celebrated Chinese New Year on Tuesday. This year is the year of the tiger we created some tiger bunting for our board by colouring in a tiger picture and we created a tiger face using different pieces of paper. The children were confident individuals looking at the image on the board and then using the pieces to create their own face.

We cleaned the classroom, made lanterns and used black and orange icing to crate tiger faces on biscuits.
